Ready for an adventure?

Start at the beginning of the alphabet and identify something that begins with the letter “A”. Then work your way through all the letters in the alphabet. What can you see? What can you hear?

Minibeast huntThere’s amazing wildlife out there if you know where to look. Both above and below ground, minibeasts live everywhere, so turn over stones, logs or pieces of bark to see what’s lurking underneath.

You may find:

Spiders, worms, woodlice, grubs, centipedes, beetles, ants, dragonflies, caterpillars, butterflies, grasshoppers and ladybirds If you have one,

take a magnifying glass with you so everyone can have a really good look.

Catch the colourThink of a colour, shout it out and watch as everyone sets off to find an object in that shade. Start with easy-to-find colours like green and yellow before you move on to the much rarer blues and reds.

Ducks love:• Chopped vegetable peel• Bird seed• Chopped lettuce• Cracked corn, oats and other grains• Frozen peas or sweetcorn that have been defrosted

Please don’t feed them:• Bread • Chocolate • Crisps • Crackers

Watch the clouds go byTime to use your imagination...

All you need to do is lay back, relax and look up at the clouds. Pick an interestingly shaped one and ask everyone to say what they think it looks like, it could be as random as an elephant, a loo brush, or a lollipop! Everyone then has to vote for their favourite answer and the winners gets to pick the next cloud!

Shadow tagA great game to play at the beginning or end of the day when the shadows are at their longest. Decide who’s going to be ‘it’ and then start running around. When the person who’s ‘it’ steps on someone else’s shadow, they become ‘it’ and the whole game starts again.

Top tipThis recipe is ideal for using any leftover fat after cooking.

Bird Cake Recipe

Ingredients

• Empty yogurt pots (one for each cake)

• String

• Nuts/peanuts (not salted)

• Seeds

• Oatmeal

• Cheese

• Currants

• Raisins

• Cooled melted fat

Method

Mix some nuts (peanuts are best, not salted), seeds, oatmeal, cheese, currants and raisins together with a bit of melted fat.

Make a hole in the bottom of the empty yoghurt pot with a sharp pencil and put some string through it. Then fill the pot with the mixture put it in the fridge or freezer until set. Turn the yoghurt pot upside down, remove the set mixture and then hang it up outside.

Now that you’ve made your delicious bird cake, put it out in the garden and wait for your new feathered friends to pop by. You can use this page to write a note of the different species of birds that you spot!
