Notes about our 2019 Tours Programme

Welcome to another year of exciting YANT Members' holidays at home and abroad. In conjunction with Brightwater Holidays, we are offering a wide selection of tours to suit all our members and I hope you will find something to satisfy your own interests in this brochure. Includes old and new destinations, different and exciting opportunities! Our exciting packages include archaeology sites, cathedrals, churches, houses and castles with varied architecture and gardens with wonderful flora and fauna, ferries and cruise boat trips! So make your choice today from the enclosed itineraries of the forthcoming holidays. For anyone new to our holidays this is how we work: In March we hold the annual Tours Advisory Group meeting. This is open to all members and is usually attended by the Product Development Manager, Andrew Sharples from Brightwater Holidays. Based on ideas put forward by our members, we decide on the holiday programme for the following year. Brightwater Holidays then handles all the administration - bookings, deposits, balances, itineraries and hotel and transport contracts. Initial details are agreed at my meeting with them in June, with a final version of the programme agreed in July/August ready for the September Newsletter. Brightwater Holidays will then start to take bookings from September onwards. Is the deposit payable straight away? No. Brightwater Holidays have agreed to delay the payment of deposits for coach and train based holidays. All bookings made between September and December 2018 will be regarded as ‘Provisional’, meaning that you will be guaranteed a place but will not have to pay a deposit at the time. The exception is for holidays by air, when the deposit must be paid immediately in order to guarantee the flight. When deposits are due (5th January 2019) you will be contacted by Brightwater Holidays to confirm your booking and make the appropriate deposit. See Page 12 for more details. Holiday details meeting. Members like to attend meetings about our holidays, so we will be holding a session to discuss all the forthcoming 2019 holidays on 31st October 2018. Product Manager Andrew Sharples and Tour Manager Clive Warsop from Brightwater Holidays will be on hand to discuss and show slides about all our proposed tours. Do I have to book months in advance? Bookings can be accepted up to a few days before departure if there are still spaces. However, most people book by the end of January, so it makes sense to book as soon as possible. Departure Points. All coach journeys departures commence from Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road. On return they will stop if possible at York Railway Station to enable members to obtain taxis or buses home but also at Memorial Gardens. For all train journeys members will meet and depart from under the Departures Board at York Station. I hope that you enjoy the tours that have been arranged for 2019 and look forward to seeing you on these and future holidays. Full itineraries of the 2019 Holiday Programme and regular updates throughout the year are viewable from the new YANT website. www.yant.org.uk Members' Pages Peter Drew Telephone: 01904 702 285 e-mail: [email protected] September 2018

WELCOME TO THE YORK ASSOCIATION TOURS

Our tours make a contribution to NT funds, but their main purpose is to provide an enjoyable and interesting activity for our Members, many of whom come on several every season and as they have been doing so for a number of years, we trust that we are on the right lines.

We aim to run tours which will appeal to YANT Members, and not just to duplicate the sort of holidays you can buy from a travel agent. Thus we visit houses (NT, NT for Scotland, English Heritage and its Scottish and Welsh counterparts, and many which are privately owned), gardens, castles and art galleries. We aim to operate in a relaxed and friendly manner.

THE SORT OF TOURS WE RUN

We endeavour to provide interest, variety and value for money. We usually visit two or three venues each day. To appreciate the properties to the full, you need to be able to walk reasonable distances and negotiate stairs (historic houses seldom have lifts) and often long avenues in the gardens.

Gratuities:- tour manager, coach drivers and local guides are included (excludes hotel staff). We normally arrange porterage at hotels but there may be times when you have to carry your luggage a short distance – on and off trains, for example – so cases with wheels are a good idea.

If for some reason you wish to opt out of all or part of a day’s programme, that’s no problem, provided you notify the Tour Manager in advance; however, if you miss one of the advertised visits we are not normally able to make any refund.

In general, we expect you to be fit and self-sufficient, although the Tour Manager and other members of the group will of course help out in a crisis. Before booking please assure yourself that you are fit enough to take part in the tour you are booking on and are not suffering from any infirmity that might diminish your enjoyment of the tour.

WHO CAN COME ON THE TOURS?

To take part in the holidays you and any accompanying friends must be Members of the York Association of the National Trust, which anyone can join. The annual subscription is £8 for individual membership or £14 for family membership. In addition to holidays and day trips, the Association also organises walks, talks and social events, previewed in a quarterly Newsletter. Details of membership can be obtained from the Membership Secretary: Elinor Bailey Telephone: 01347 821 262 or [email protected] A WELCOME TO NEW TRAVELLERS

We are always very pleased to welcome Members coming on York Association tours for the first time and hope their experience will lead them to become regular travellers with us. Single travellers are very welcome and on all tours we arrange a get-together before dinner on the first evening when people can meet their fellow travellers. We had twenty first-time Members on our tours in 2017/18. FIRST- CLASS TRAIN TRAVEL ON RAIL- BASED TOURS

On all holidays by train we now offer first-class travel at a supplement. Train operators do not advise us of these supplements early enough to quote in this brochure, but Brightwater Holidays will contact all passengers booked on these tours as soon as they know the exact price, and give Members the opportunity to upgrade to first class if they wish to do so. LNER offers complimentary drinks and a meal or snack for first-class passengers. If you wish to book your own rail tickets or are entitled to free rail travel, Brightwater Holidays will offer an appropriate discount on request.

A welcome drink followed by dinner will be served in the evening. Monday 25 March 2019 This morning, after breakfast, we visit the gardens of Villa Rufolo, which commands picture perfect views over the Amalfi coast. This is one of the oldest surviving palaces in Italy dating from the 13th century – Wagner visited the villa in 1880 and was inspired to write part of his opera Parisfal here. After lunch (included) in a local restaurant, we will visit the gardens of Villa Cimbrone, a 19th century Moorish/English hybrid by William Beckett, Lord Grimthorpe, who owned the property until 1900. The garden was designed on a clifftop promontory with magnificent views of the Amalfi coast jutting out 106 metres above the Mediterranean. We then return to our hotel in Sorrento where dinner is served in the evening. Tuesday 26 March 2019 After breakfast we depart on a day trip to the island of Capri, crossing by ferry from Sorrento. On our tour of the island we will see the Grotta Azzura sea caves, the Roman ruins of the Villa Jovis, the Villa San Michele di Axel Munthe, also built on the site of a Roman villa with lovely gardens, and the Monastery and museum at Certosa di San Giacomo. Capri was also famous as the home of English actress and singer Gracie Fields. We return by ferry to Sorrento and our hotel, where dinner is served in the evening. Wednesday 27 March 2019 After breakfast the day is free to relax in the hotel or explore the surrounding area. An optional half-day walking tour of Sorrento will be available. Dinner is served in the evening. Thursday 28 March 2019 We travel to Naples, breaking our journey with visits to the archaeological wonders of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii was, of course, the town which was tragically drowned in lava following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The town was buried under 23 feet of ash, which solidified with rain and time, preserving everything as if it was in a time capsule. Hidden for centuries, excavation work revealed an elegant resort with complete streets, beautiful villas and sculptures. Herculaneum was destroyed in the same eruption, but unlike Pompeii, it was mainly affected by pyroclastic flows, thus preserving the wooden elements. Moreover, Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii, possessing a density of fine houses, and far more lavish use of coloured marble cladding. We continue to our hotel in Naples, with dinner in the evening.

Friday 29 March 2019 Following breakfast we travel north to the colossal Palace of La Caserta. The monumental complex at Caserta, created by the Bourbon king Charles III in the mid-18th century, was to rival Versailles and the Royal Palace in Madrid. It is exceptional for the way in which it brings together a magnificent palace with its park and gardens, as well as natural woodland, hunting lodges and a silk factory. It is an eloquent expression of the Enlightenment but it is big! We cannot possibly visit all of the parkland and the entire Palace – so it is our intention to include one of the guided tours of the palace where we will see a selection of the rooms and art collection then have time for lunch (not included) before we explore some of the parkland including the beautiful ‘English Garden’. Dinner is served on return to our hotel in Naples. Saturday 30 March 2019 Enjoy your breakfast. A full day in Naples beckons today as we visit the Archaeological Museum, noted for its works from Greek, Roman and Renaissance times, including artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum; the Catacombs of San Gennaro, dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries; the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, southern Italy's largest and richest art gallery; and the Cappella Sansevera, inc Giuseppe Sanmartino's incredible sculpture, Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ). Dinner is served in our hotel this evening. Sunday 31 March 2019 Today after breakfast we check out of our hotel and head back to Naples airport for our return flight to

Manchester (provisional times: 1320/1535) where on arrival our coach will transfer us back to York.

The medieval walled town is also one of the most photographed in Brittany. Dinner is served in the evening. Sunday 19 May 2019 After breakfast, we spend the day touring the rugged west coast of Brittany, with a visit to the port of Douarnenez, where we have an opportunity for lunch (not included), followed by a visit to the Cairn of Barnenez near Plouezoc'h on the Kernéléhen peninsula. This dates to the early Neolithic period, about 4500 BC, and is one of the earliest megalithic monuments in Europe. Dinner is served at the hotel in the evening. Monday 20 May 2019 Today we travel east to Carnac, where we will explore this extensive megalithic site. There are more than 3,000 stones here, consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs, hewn from the local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany, the largest such collection in the world The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC. We will also visit the nearby Museum, which holds many of the artefacts found in the area. After an opportunity for lunch (not included) in Vannes, we will spend the afternoon touring around the Gulf of Morbihan area, where there a number of other archaeological sites. Tuesday 21 May 2019 After check out of our hotel we transfer to Dinard, breaking our journey with visits to two châteaux, the first being the Château de Josselin. This splendid residence inhabited by the Rohan family for almost a thousand years stands on the banks of the Oust river, in the heart of the Morbihan area. The château is a remarkable testimony to feudal architecture and the Renaissance era. The dining room is set out in the decorative style that was fashionable in the late 19th century, and strongly inspired by the Middle Ages. Our second visit is the austere yet impressive Château de Combourg, which became famous in the 18th century as the home of François-René de Chateaubriand, the writer, politician, diplomat and historian who founded Romanticism in French literature. massive round towers topped with pepper-pot roofs mark the corners and small apertures pierce the tall walls. We arrive at our hotel in Dinard on the north coast of Brittany where dinner will be served. Wednesday 22 May 2019 After breakfast we explore the surrounding area, first travelling east to Mont St Michel, the iconic jewel of northern Brittany. Mont St Michel presents a vivid contrast between the gaudy tourist shops and pancake parlours that line the path leading up to the top of the hill and the beautiful, austere Abbey that perches there, with stunning views over the bay. Next we visit St Malo, the ‘Ville Corsaire’ (Pirate City) at the mouth of the River Rance. Extensive damage during the Second World War meant that much of the walled city was rebuilt and today it presents an impressive outline. Within the walls are a host of shops and restaurants, so lunch here, (not included). Travelling a little way inland along the banks of the Rance we come to Dinan, which features a well preserved, half-timbered mediaeval centre. Finally we return to Dinard itself, a once-chic seaside resort whose glory days may lie in the past but still lend the town a delightful faded glamour. We return to our hotel for dinner. Thursday 23 May 2019 Today, after breakfast, we check out of our hotel and transfer to the airport at Rennes for our return flight to Manchester, where on arrival we are met by our coach for our return transfer to York.

Insurance TBA Monday 1 July 2019 We depart by coach from York and head for Herefordshire, stopping en route for lunch (not included) at Pengethley Garden Centre, near Ross-on-Wye. We will then continue to our first visit - Sir Roy Strong’s Garden The Laskett. The garden was created not long after Sir Roy and his late wife Julia Trevelyan Oman married in 1973. They created a garden of sentiment; memories of people, places and events. There is a rosemary bush that belonged to Julia’s nanny and an area dedicated to their cats. The garden was very much divided into "his" and "hers" areas with Julia taking care of the kitchen garden and Roy with the architectural elements and the formal enclosures. Following our visit we continue our journey into Herefordshire and our base for the next four nights, the comfortable Three Counties Hotel, Hereford. Situated in over three acres of garden the hotel provides a peaceful haven. A welcome drink followed by dinner is served in the evening.

Tuesday 2 July 2019 Today following breakfast we begin by travelling to the Hampton Court Castle, a 15th century castle surrounded by 1000 acres of stunning parkland, pasture and woodlands with the River Lugg running alongside. The Hampton Court Estate has a fascinating and chequered history dating back to the 15th Century. Henry IV began building on the site before giving it to Sir Rowland Lenthall at the time of his marriage to Margaret Fitzalan, daughter of the Earl of Arundel and a cousin of the King. The gardens were only recently completed and are one of the most ambitious garden creations of our time. Original Victorian garden walls enclose stunning new flower gardens divided by canals, island pavilions and pleached avenues We continue to Berrington Hall (NT), a fine Georgian mansion that sits within 'Capability' Brown’s final garden and landscape. Though it has a slightly austere exterior, the house has delicate interiors and a homely, welcoming feel. Lunch is available here on arrival (not included). In the afternoon we visit Croft Castle (NT), which sits deep in the heart of Herefordshire countryside surrounded by 1500 acres of historic woodland, farm and parkland. Outside we can explore the working walled garden complete with historic orchards, vineyard and take a peek inside the 1908 glasshouse restoration project. Look out for the Georgian stable block and uncover some of the stories of how horses were cared for during the war years. Dinner is served back at our hotel in the evening. Wednesday 3 July 2019 After breakfast we depart for Kinnersley Castle, a family-owned, Grade 2* listed historic house located approximately 10 miles from Hay-on-Wye. It was one of the many Marches castles sited by the Normans along the Welsh border, though as seen today it is predominantly the remodelled Elizabethan manor house of the Vaughan family. Kinnersley Castle features various fine oak-panelled rooms and the original 1588 plasterwork ceiling of the Solar. We continue to Hay-on-Wye which lies on the border with Wales, marked here by the River Wye. There will be some free time to have lunch (not included) and explore this pleasant little town which is famous for its second-hand bookshops. In the afternoon we drive through the rolling hills of the Black Mountains to Llanfihangel Court, an historic 15th century Tudor Manor with landscaped gardens. The house contains fine 17th century panelling and plaster ceilings, with an important oak staircase, stables and large barn. We return to our hotel where dinner is served in the evening. Thursday 4 July 2019 Following breakfast we travel into Hereford to visit Hereford Cathedral and Gardens. Here we see the Mappa Mundi - an outstanding treasure of the medieval age which reveals how 13th century scholars interpreted the world in spiritual and geographical terms. The map is undated but bears the name of "Richard de Haldingham e de Lafford", whom some historians have identified as Richard de Bello, Prebendary of Lafford in the diocese of Lincoln during the late 13th century. Together with evidence interpreted from the content of the map, a date of around 1290 is considered reliable. As part of this exhibition you can also see the world’s largest surviving Chained Library, with over 1500 books dating from the 8th to the 19th centuries. The more adventurous may also wish to climb the 218 steps to the roof of the tower where you are rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the surrounding hills. After an opportunity for lunch in Hereford (not included), in the afternoon we travel to Brockhampton Estate (NT). At the heart of this 1,700-acre farmed estate lies Lower Brockhampton Manor House, a romantic timber-framed house dating back to the late 14th century. Steeped in history, Brockhampton has witnessed many changes. Until 2014 the rear rooms in the manor house were being lived in and not open to the public. The overriding aims of the Brockhampton Revealed project focused on peeling back the layers of history to show visitors how seven centuries of occupation have shaped the building we see today. For example, the original medieval great hall had an upper floor inserted into it by the family, in order to accommodate their many children. We return to our hotel where dinner is served in the evening. Friday 5 July 2019 This morning following breakfast we check-out of our hotel. Our final visit will be to Hanbury Hall (NT), a country retreat in the heart of Worcestershire. The house and garden, originally a stage-set for summer parties, offer a glimpse into life at the turn of the 18th century. Don't miss the original wall paintings by Sir James Thornhill: full of drama and politics, they show the birth of Georgian society. The original formal gardens, designed by George London, have been faithfully re-created and complement the relaxed later gardens, with orangery, orchards and walled garden. Lunch is available here (not included). Following our visit we will return to our original departure point in York.

Insurance TBA Saturday 10 August 2019 We depart to visit Windsor Castle, the scene of countless royal occasions over the centuries, most recently the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Our free-flow tour includes the State Apartments, furnished with some of the finest works from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Holbein, Sèvres porcelain and exquisite English and French furniture. Another highlight is Queen Mary’s Dolls House, a perfect miniature replica of a 20th century aristocratic home. We will also see St George’s Chapel, scene of that royal wedding. We continue to Portsmouth and board a ferry to Fishbourne. We then travel to the Royal Esplanade Hotel in Ryde, where a welcome drink dinner will be served in the evening. Sunday 11 August 2019 Today we travel to East Cowes for a visit to Osborne House & Gardens. With views onto the Solent, this was Queen Victoria’s favourite home, which boasts the most impressive formal gardens on the island. These include a recently restored walled garden and an attractive tree-lined walk to the Swiss Cottage, built as a spectacular Wendy House for the Royal children. Here we will enjoy a guided tour of the Gardens, conducted by one of the gardening staff. After lunch in the Terrace Restaurant (included) we continue with a guided tour of the House. Here we will see the sumptuous state rooms, whose furnishings reflect the passions, taste and style of Victoria and Albert, and the family rooms, including the bedroom where Queen Victoria passed away on 22 January 1901. Later we will visit the Swiss Cottage, the large Wendy house which Victoria and Albert’s nine children loved to play in, and take the shuttle down to the beach, another favourite haunt of the royal children. We return to our hotel, where dinner will be served in the evening. Monday 12 August 2019 Our exploration of the island continues today as we drive to the westernmost point at Alum Bay, where we visit the Needles Old Battery and New Battery (NT). The Needles Old Battery is a Victorian fort built in 1862 and used throughout both World Wars. The Battery’s fascinating story is told in a series of newly recreated, atmospheric rooms, whilst vivid cartoons by comic book artist Geoff Campion illustrate the part it played in the history of modern Britain. There are two original guns on the Parade Ground and an underground tunnel leads to a searchlight emplacement with dramatic views over the Needles rocks. We continue to the gardens of Mottistone Manor (NT), near the quaint village of Brook. The gardens were laid out in the 1960s and 70s by Sir John and Lady Nicholson, who brought a Mediterranean influence to the styling. Lunch is available here (not included). In the afternoon we take to the water as we enjoy a cruise from Cowes, out into The Solent, where once the great trans-Atlantic liners turned west and headed for New York, and across to Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy. We return to Cowes then back to the hotel for dinner.

Tuesday 13 August 2019 We travel to Carisbrooke Castle, a quintessential romantic castle, which has been an Elizabethan artillery fortress, a king's prison and a royal summer residence. We move on to Godshill, a quintessential English Village which boasts some of the oldest architecture on the Isle of Wight. With its medieval church, thatched roof cottages and a winding main-street lined with traditional tearooms, Godshill is as picturesque as it is popular. We continue with a visit to The Garlic Farm at Newchurch, where we will be taken through the fields by tractor and trailer, with a member of staff telling us all about garlic growing on the way. We will then enjoy a light lunch (included), which will of course feature some of the farm’s own garlic in one form or another. In the afternoon we drive to Shanklin to visit the world famous gorge entered from Shanklin Old Village. Dropping 105ft from the top of the cliff to sea level, Shanklin Chine is a natural fissure in the cliff. We return to our hotel where dinner will be served once again this evening. Wednesday 14 August 2019 Today we begin our homeward journey, transferring to Fishbourne to catch a morning ferry to Portsmouth. We then travel north to the Savill Gardens in Windsor, one of Britain’s greatest ornamental gardens. Neither a botanical garden, nor a kitchen garden attached to a great house, it is a garden for the garden’s sake, enjoyed by horticulturalists and enthusiasts alike. It never fails to charm visitors who come to explore its 35 acres of contemporary and classically designed gardens and exotic woodland. Developed under the patronage of Kings and Queens, The Savill Garden was created in the 1930s by Sir Eric Savill. Lunch is included here. Our final visit takes us to Frogmore House, which is only open to the public on certain days in August. For almost 20 years, Frogmore was the home of Queen Victoria's mother, The Duchess of Kent. Works by her and her daughter are on display in the house. Queen Victoria often visited Frogmore during her long widowhood Our visit ends in the Britannia Room which is furnished with a selection of items from the Royal Yacht Britannia. We will then return to York with arrival due in the evening.

Monday 23 September 2019 We depart this morning on a direct flight from Manchester to Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden (provisional times with SAS: 0945/1345). We transfer by coach to Uppsala and visit the archaeological site at Gamla Uppsala. People have been buried in Gamla Uppsala for 2,000 years, since the area rose above water. Originally there were between 2,000 and 3,000 mounds or barrows in the area but most have become farmland, gardens and quarries. Today only 250 remain, the most noteworthy of these being the three Royal Mounds. According to ancient mythology and folklore, it was the three gods Thor, Odin and Freyr who lay here but in the 19th and 20th centuries they were thought to hold the remains of three kings of the legendary House of Ynglings. They are dated to the 5th and 6th centuries and are Sweden's oldest national symbols, often depicted in drawings and paintings.

Tuesday 24 September 2019 Today we depart by coach to visit to the archaeological site at Anundshög near Västerås. 9 metres high with a diameter of 64 metres, Anundshög is Sweden’s largest burial mound and dates from the 10th century AD. The mound is built on a foundation of clay on which the dead were cremated. The remains were then covered with a mound of stones, which was covered by turf and earth. The prehistoric remains around Anundshög show clearly that the area was the hub of a power centre during the Iron Age, from around 500 BC to around 1050 AD. The visible remains include ship settings (stones laid out in the shape of a ship), a unique rune stone and many standing stones which mark graves. We continue to Skokloster Castle near Sigtuna, considered to be one of the great castles of Baroque Europe. Built between 1654 and 1676, Skokloster is a monument to the Swedish Age of Greatness – a period in the middle of the seventeenth century when Sweden expanded to become one of the major powers in Europe. After the owner of Skokloster Castle, General Carl Gustaf Wrangel, died in 1676 the castle was never really completed and the banqueting hall remains in the exact same condition, tools included, as the builders left it the day Wrangel died. The rest of the castle has also remained amazingly untouched for more than 300 years, giving this building a unique authenticity. We return to our hotel in Uppsala, where dinner is served in the evening. Wednesday 25 September 2019 After breakfast we check out of our hotel and depart for the Swedish capital Stockholm, where we visit the Vasa Museum. The Swedish warship Vasa was built 1626-1628 and no expense was spared in decorating and equipping the ship, which was also one of the largest and most heavily armed warships of its time. Unfortunately she was also built top-heavy and foundered and sank after sailing only 1,300 metres into her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. She fell into obscurity after most of her valuable bronze cannons were salvaged in the 17th century. After she was located again in the late 1950s in a busy shipping lane just outside Stockholm harbour, she was salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961. During the recovery, thousands of artefacts and the remains of at least 15 people were found in and around the hull. An impressive 1:10 scale model shows how the ship would have looked at the time. Next we visit the Swedish History Museum, the artefacts come from the whole country and all periods of history, from ancient prehistory to the Viking period and the Middle Ages. Following our visit we transfer to the railway station for a late afternoon train to Malmö in Skåne, the southernmost province of Sweden. A light meal is served on board in the course of our relaxing journey of around four and a half hours. On arrival in Malmö, we transfer by coach to our hotel. Evening is at leisure. Thursday 26 September 2019 We depart by coach for a tour of Österlen, the south-eastern part of Skåne. Here we will visit the megaliths known as Ales Stenar (Ale’s Stones), which are laid out in a ship setting similar to those at Anundshög. The site has been dated to about 1400 years ago. Until its transfer to Sweden in 1658, Skåne belonged to Denmark, which is our ultimate destination this afternoon. We cross the strait between the two countries via the Öresund Bridge, a combined road and rail link consisting of an 8km bridge, an artificial island and a 5km tunnel, and continue to our hotel in Copenhagen. Dinner is served in the evening. Friday 27 September 2019 We tour Copenhagen today, beginning with a visit to Rosenborg Slot. The castle was originally built as a country summerhouse in 1606 and is an example of King Christian IV's many architectural projects We continue to the National Museum of Denmark which chronicles 14,000 years of Danish history. Finally today we visit the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, an art museum built around the personal collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842–1914), the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries. We return to our hotel. Dinner is served in a local restaurant this evening. Saturday 28 September 2019 After breakfast we depart for a visit to Frederiksborg Slot, Hillerød. This Renaissance palace, the largest in Scandinavia, was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV and is now a museum of National history. The current edifice replaced a previous castle erected by Frederik II and is located on three small islands in the middle of Palace Lake (Slotsøen), adjoined by a large formal garden in the Baroque style. We then head for Aarhus in Jutland (mainland Denmark) travelling by way of the Great Belt Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, which connects the islands of Zealand and Funen. On arrival in Aarhus we continue to our hotel, where dinner is served in the evening.

Sunday 29 September 2019 This morning, we visit the Viking Museum, located on the spot where the Vikings founded Aarhus some 1200 years ago. In the afternoon, we depart for a visit to Fyrkat, thought to be the oldest of Denmark’s Viking ring castles, which have been dated to the reign of King Harald Bluetooth, who died in 986. We continue to the Silkeborg Museum, whose principal exhibits are the remarkable ‘bog bodies’, known as Tollund Man and Elling Woman. The body of the man was discovered in the Bjældskovdal bog in 1950 by the brothers Emil and Viggo Højgård and was so well-preserved that their immediate reaction was to call the police and report a murder. Expert examination determined that this was the body of a man who died around 350 BC, i.e. early Iron Age. Elling Woman was found in 1938, 50m from the spot where Tollund Man appeared 12 years later and has been dated to around the same time. We return to our hotel in Aarhus, where dinner is served. Monday 30 September 2019 After breakfast we depart for visit to the archaeological site at Jelling, which is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an outstanding example of the Pagan Nordic culture. The complex consists of two flat topped mounds, 70 metres in diameter and up to 11 metres high. Following this, our final visit, we continue to Copenhagen airport in time to check in for our evening flight back to Manchester (provisional times with SAS: 1720/1815).
