A recent graduate of architecture (M.Arch, B.Arch, AAS in Interior Design) from the School of Architecture, University of Utah, this portfolio features some of my work in design/build, fabrication, and concept design, and professional work samples. I love design in all of its aspects and enjoy refining an idea through the creative process, into something tangible and useful. I believe site and climate play major roles in how we respond architecturally to clean design and passive solutions. I constantly seek to find poetry in all its forms, and to blend beauty and function seamlessly to inspire and enhance the quality of life.

DETAILSIn response to the isolated location and fluctuating climate, this home was designed around five passive strategies: thick insulated walls (straw bale), an earthen wall (the berm system), a double roof to aid cooling, an oculus to vent heat and allow light in during the day, and a mass heater and bench to efficiently capture and maintain any heat produced. This 1,060 sf ADA accessible home was completed within budget ($25,000) and on schedule (90 days).

Proposed the original thermal massing concept design and details including the berm and rocket stove. Head of the heating system, wood floor inlay, kitchen, and on the following teams: construction documents, berm wall, and interiors.

DETAILSBuilt in the perceived perspectives of the cube, as one walks through the sixteen foot tunnel, the dimensions decrease, giving the user a playful realization of actual space. The entire form was built off-site, as prefabricated panels, then reassembled on-site. Installed on the Salt Flats, Utah. Size: 8’W x 8’H x 16’D

Proposed the concept and project design, also was responsible for material donations and transportation of panels to site. Team: Liz Yonashiro, Ethan Barley, Luis Eduardo

Instructors: Joerg Ruegemer, Sophie Masse, Jacob Gines

DETAILSIntrigued by the nature of materials and its property boundaries, wood was hadcrafted into an illuminating drop of liquid. Manipulating a material that is not amorphous by nature, the interior of the lamp reveals the true qualities of wood by exposing the inner grain patterns, which was sandblasted for greater emphasis.

DETAILSThis sectional building model demonstrates how light is drawn further into the interior spaces through use of an anidolic light shelf. The shelf increases access to natural daylight by up to fourteen feet deeper into the interiors than a standard window. In addition, the 30” deep raised floor was included in the design to offer fast access to building mechanical systems and maintenance.

DETAILSProject goal was to produce a toddler bunk bed design with high yield, low cost, and zero hardware (fitted with slot joints) that was stable, flexible, and fun. Supporting crossmembers and a slotted bed board add to structural stability and tightening of joints, with reversable end pieces which rotate for ladder use or serves as a headboard. The ke•mia bunk, for siblings Kenta (age 4) and Mia (3 months). Living in a 600 sf, one bedroom apartment, space was a major issue in the design of the toddler bunk bed.

PROCESSCad and Sketchup was used to model a mockup before cutting plywood pieces with a table saw and router (full design cut in 8 hours). The final product was sanded on all sides, with 2 colors of stain each side, then 3-4 clear coats of polyurethane was applied. With a nod of approval from the ecstatic proud 4 year-old owner, he now calls this bunk his home.Team: Liz Yonashiro, Ryan Jones, completed March 2013

DETAILSA tribute to the traditional Okinawan sanshin, similar to a three stringed banjo. Part of a unique opportunity to learn more about working with wood types and tools. Made with walnut, red maple, and bubinga, finished in tung oil and beeswax.

PROCESSFor the neck of the sanshin, three strips of wood were glued and clamped together, cut and shaped with a band saw, and sanded down. For the drum, an octagonal form was required for the rounded square shape, and joined together with spline joints. Completed under three weeks. Tools: band saw, table saw, router, belt sander, chisel, hammer.

DETAILSLIFT is an urban response which returns the architectural form back to its landscape, similar to the natural fissures and slopes of the land, in reference to the ground plane. As you walk through the site, topography and differing building levels flow into one walkable plane. Views from a walkable rooftop open up to the surrounding cityscapes, while below serves as a gallery during the day, and an amphitheater, bringing the site to life at night.

ROUNDHOUSE SPA_studio projectEvanston, WY

DETAILSThis spa was designed for total relaxation through unique water therapy. Upon entrance, an overhead mist shower cleanses and invigorates the senses, which then is followed by a room with a central heated stone slab. Different treatments connected by waist high water corridors, into rooms of varying degrees of temperatures, water pressure, and aromatherapy. The journey ends with a cool pool of waterfalls and silhouettes of trees and nature.

Worked collaboratively with team member on the full design through a series of sketches. Finalized the architectural drawings, section perspective, and provided CAD for the laser cut model. Team: Liz Yonashiro, Jessica Gilmore

GREENHAUS CAFE_studio projectVancouver BC

DETAILSThe Urban Farm Collective was designed to enable, educate, and inspire residents in urban agriculture. The green house and cafe is lifted from the ground, leaving a plaza open for the public and space for a farmers market on the weekends. A wide ramp leads to the cafe and vertical farming above, showcasing different alternative systems such as aquaponics and other small-scale installations in a way that mimics natural processes and biodiversity, in a closed loop, reuse, and zero waste lifestyle.

URBAN HIGH RISE_advanced structuresSalt Lake City UT

DETAILSAs part of an advanced structures class, this high rise model was designed and modeled in a 72-hour design charrette. The high rise exposes its skeletal structure through it’s building skin, with a facade design sensitive to solar orientation. The duration of the semester was spent designing beam spans and providing a structural analysis.

Designed the concept and prepared the CAD files for laser cutting a series of plates, also provided the graphics and photography for the project website. For a complete structural analysis, view: www.highrisechronicle.blogspot.com Team: Liz Yonashiro, Ryan Bundy, Joshua Weber

SLC livegrow_drylands competition / studio projectSalt Lake City UT

DETAILSThis project addresses the water-energy nexus, climate change + variability, and the rural/urban disconnect. Residents living in low-income housing near the surplus canal have first priority for work and training in the agricultural community center, designed around passive strategies. A green roof on both the southern and northern ends take advantage of solar gain, while below a chicken coop and aquaponics on both horizontal and vertical axis dem-onstrate the recirculating, closed loop process.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Inspired by the purity in form of a rain drop, living water seeks to align the abiders’ perspectives with their surrounds both within and without. The simple, pure form is complimented by a single

material which is perforated by alternating alignment of layers.

The functions of gathering and resting demostrate themselves throughout in a responsive form. The gathering space is an

open circular space which tapers as it moves upward, drawing the eyes and thoughts toward the heavens. The resting space cocoons the person on three sides without obstructing views to celestial bodies above.

In construction, a series of layered assemblies in modular units make for flexible transportation andorientation, with dowel placement as interlockingconnections. Discarded organic materials arereclaimed for this new application.

LIVING wATER_competition entrySukkah City STL

DETAILSA temporary dwelling in fluid form, this installation seeks to align the abiders’ perspectives with their surrounds both within and without. A single material is seemingly perforated through alternating alignment of exposed space. The gathering space open and intimate, tapering in as it moves upward while directing the eyes and thoughts upward. The space cocoons the person on three sides without obstructing views to celestial bodies above.

In construction, a series of layered assemblies of plywood in modular units aid flexible trans-portation, and concealed dowels are placed as interlocking connections. Recycled organic materials are used for this temporary dwelling. Extracurricular activity, 2011.Team: Liz Yonashiro, Daniel Lyman, Jeremy Larsen

ZOMBIE SAFEHOUSE_competition entryVectorworks Creative Minds

DETAILSIn a world where the environment is reclaimed and all pollution has ceased, and the carbon footprint of the human race has been reduced to a single fingerprint, adaptive reuse, passive design, and a biodigestor for energy and waste management become a necessary solution to survival. An existing gas station is transformed into a zombie safehouse, with residential living and rooftop gardens above, secured and safe. An entrance ramp drops down for fast access, and becomes a raised platform when not in use. Extracurricular activity, October 2012.
