Housing Office News/Report

May 11, 2016

Housing Committee –The Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Band Housing Committee has been meeting every

Tuesday at 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Volunteers are: Maggie Jack, Cathy Swain, Grace Smith, Darryl Coon, Leslie Walkus (newly appointed

Chair), Silena George, Alvin Walkus Jr., Patti Sewid, Donna Williams, & Maggie Coon.

Housing Policy – Housing Policy has been adopted and ratified by Chief & Council as of August 13, 2015.

It is and has been in effect since then for all property (land) of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Band whether

you own your house or not.The Committee will be making copies of the Policies and Book binding them for

all Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Band/CMHC/Private homes on the Tsulquate I.R. #4. Once you receive them

please familiarize yourself with it and keep it in a safe place for future reference.

Housing Rental Agreements –As of June 1, 2016 all band owned units will be charged rent. The band has

been paying for all repairs and replacement of appliances for many years with no money come in for those

repairs or replacements. INAC has approved band rent charges through the SA department so as of June

1st rent for all band owned rentals will be charged rent. The Committee has recommended to council that

any person who does not wish to purchase the units for a dollar will be required to pay rent or forfeit

repairs/replacements and maintenance until an agreement to pay or purchase before a set deadline has

been reached. Private owners are not subject to these rules but, this also means that they will not be

eligible for repairs/replacements or maintenance.

All questions regarding housing should be directed to the Housing Committee. The volunteers listed

above are the people who recommend to Chief & Council based on information from the housing office, or

letters from the community members.

Housing Allocations - All housing allocations are based on a score sheet out of 100%. Each committee

member does a score sheet for each applicant and the total is out of 100% all score sheets for that

applicant is tallied for a total score.

Capital Specialist - Leo does not have authority to allocate houses, his job here is to submit applications

for funding and take care of the new construction, maintenance calls for CMHC and band owned units

pending approval.

According to the Housing Policy – if you would like to appeal any decision made by the housing committee

which was adopted or approved by Chief & Council you are requested to submit a letter of appeal to the

Housing committee for review.

The committee has made several recommendations to the C&C to date, they are implementing the use of

the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Band Housing Policy, Residential Rental Agreement, and Housing

Committee Terms of Reference in all aspects of the bands housing.

Yo Wiksas? We have been having such beautiful weather lately. I hope you all have been enjoying it. As many of you may know, the Elders went on a boat trip to pick seaweed and cast a few jigging lines Tuesday morning. We had Willie, Ernie Hanuse, Emma and Clyde all go on the trip along with the watchmen crew and their driver, Adam. Clyde was the only lucky one who caught a nice sized halibut. Way to go Clyde! Thank you GNN Marine for your services. The Elders have been having their regular luncheon meetings every Wednesday. If you have missed the last few, here are some of the things we discussed or was presented: - Elder's Finance update - Proactive ways to deal with vandalism within our community - Housing issues within our community, families with children & Elers in need of homes -Chief & Council attended a meeting on May 4th with the Elders -Treaty cutbacks - Future plans for the program - Elder's Council Nominations to happen very soon, last Council's term was up November 2015. As you can see, the agenda for each meeting is usually pretty full. Thank you to Elizabeth, Vanessa & Brian for all of your help in lending a hand with the lunches and program in general. Youth Sports & Recreation Coordinator now is in full swing in her office here at the Elder's Centre, Vanessa Walkus. Look out on Facebook for future activities happening here for the youth :) Our Good Food Bag is looking delicious as per usual. Great job Chelsey!
