Yu Neng has a rich history of 80 years. We have benefitted from the support of and contributions from community, neighbourhood and pioneers over the last 8 decades. As a ‘closing’ event for our year-long YN80 celebrations and as a lead-up to our historic SG50 National Day, we are embarking on a whole-school Values-in-Action (VIA) project in collaboration with strategic partners The Business Times and The RICE Co Ltd. This collaboration will take the form of a Pay-it-Forward project i.e. to get our pupils & staff to reflect on a kind deed that they have benefitted from or have experienced and to ‘pay-it- forward’ by doing something kind / good for others. Instead of expecting something in return (or a ‘pay-back’), we hope to encourage and inspire others to ‘pay’ the good deed ‘forward’. In the process, we hope to be able to inspire a movement to make this world a better place for others one good deed at a time. 2. This is very much in line with our vision of being a vibrant, connected community that aspires, learns and leads, and our mission - to create an inviting and enriched environment that nurtures passionate learners, creative thinkers and caring leaders. 3. All YNPS pupils, staff and parent volunteers will come together on Mon 3 August to hand-stitch 1500 pieces of bears. Made from a myriad of fabric pieces, of different textures and colours, each bear is unique and special just like our communities in Yu Neng, Bedok and Singapore! Hence “SGBears” is the name for this limited edition set of bears as we celebrate the diversity and vibrancy in our communities that make us uniquely Singapore! Working with our strategic partners, we hope that this collective effort will benefit 2 major children’s charities - the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF) and the Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BTBAF). 4. In preparation for this inaugural event on Mon 3 Aug, we would like to seek your support to help us make this project a meaningful and memorable one. Please work with your child/children to: identify suitable pieces of fabric from items that you no longer use but are still in good condition (e.g. shirts, batik, t-shirts, bedsheets, pillow cases, sarong etc). Cotton is the preferred fabric. Other natural fabric (like linen) material will also be suitable. The fabric pieces should be clean and in a reasonably good condition for up-cycling. use the SGBear paper pattern enclosed and pin it to/ place it against your chosen piece of fabric follow the bold outer line of the drawing and carefully cut out 2 pieces of the SGBear shape from the fabric material/s you have identified (repeat as necessary if you have other fabric pieces) submit the 2 cut-out pieces of the SGBear shape and place them in a clear plastic bag and hand them to your child’s form teacher during term time (or to the General Office during the school holidays) As we hope to involve every pupil in making a bear, we recommend that each child contributes 2 cut-out pieces of fabric.

A vibrant connected community that aspires, learns and leads

    25 May 2015

    Dear Parent/Guardian,

    YN80 Pay-it-Forward VIA project

    1. Yu Neng has a rich history of 80 years. We have benefitted from the support of and contributions from community, neighbourhood and pioneers over the last 8 decades. As a closing event for our year-long YN80 celebrations and as a lead-up to our historic SG50 National Day, we are embarking on a whole-school Values-in-Action (VIA) project in collaboration with strategic partners The Business Times and The RICE Co Ltd. This collaboration will take the form of a Pay-it-Forward project i.e. to get our pupils & staff to reflect on a kind deed that they have benefitted from or have experienced and to pay-it-forward by doing something kind / good for others. Instead of expecting something in return (or a pay-back), we hope to encourage and inspire others to pay the good deed forward.

Hence SGBears is the name for this limited edition set of bears as we celebrate the diversity and vibrancy in our communities that make us uniquely Singapore! Working with our strategic partners, we hope that this collective effort will benefit 2 major childrens charities - the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF) and the Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BTBAF).

    4. In preparation for this inaugural event on Mon 3 Aug, we would like to seek your support to help us make this project a meaningful and memorable one. Please work with your child/children to:

identify suitable pieces of fabric from items that you no longer use but are still in good condition (e.g. shirts, batik, t-shirts, bedsheets, pillow cases, sarong etc). Cotton is the preferred fabric. Other natural fabric (like linen) material will also be suitable. The fabric pieces should be clean and in a reasonably good condition for up-cycling.

use the SGBear paper pattern enclosed and pin it to/ place it against your chosen piece of fabric

follow the bold outer line of the drawing and carefully cut out 2 pieces of the SGBear shape from the fabric material/s you have identified (repeat as necessary if you have other fabric pieces)

submit the 2 cut-out pieces of the SGBear shape and place them in a clear plastic bag and hand them to your childs form teacher during term time (or to the General Office during the school holidays)

As we hope to involve every pupil in making a bear, we recommend that each child contributes 2 cut-out pieces of fabric.

    5. Collection of the cut-out fabric pieces will begin on Wed 27 May 2015. The last date for collection will be on Friday 3 July.

    6. Kindly note that these pieces of fabric will be collectively mixed and matched during the pre-event preparation. As such, your child may not be using the same pieces of materials he/she contributed. We seek your kind understanding on this matter.

    7. We are looking for parent volunteers to:

contribute more pieces of cut-out fabric material to help other pupils who may not have enough suitable fabric

help out with pre-event preparations (especially parents with sewing skills and/or parents who have access to a sewing machine).

If you feel that you are interested/able to contribute more to this project, kindly contact HOD/CCE Mrs Sohami or SH/CCE Ms Marie Yong at 64490121.

    8. Through this project, we hope that Yu Neng pupils:

are better able to appreciate our pioneers and those who have paved the way for us by paying-it-forward

learn a life-skill (i.e. sewing) and demonstrate school values like perseverance, responsibility, respect and compassion

have the opportunity and platform to express their creativity

work together with staff and stakeholders in reaching out to the community and touch the lives of those in need

    9. We thank you in advance and look forward to your strong support and contributions for this meaningful project!

All best, __________________________ __________________ Mrs Clara Lim-Tan Mrs Noras Sohaimi Principal HOD/CCE
