THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

This is my last presidential message. The end of a long,

reponsible term of two years is in sight. Looking forward to the

freedom after that! Did I enjoy these two years? Of course, I did! I

enjoyed being the President, as it was a big learning curve for me.

It had no power to it, as the Prseident is only an executor of what

the Board decides. But I enjoyed being in the pilot’s seat, especially

since I have been a driver for the last fifty years! I am particularly

happy for the improvements and the ‘tightening of screws’ that I

could bring about in the security of the hostels, and in the attitude

of the staff to their work.

The morning prayer of the office staff was shifted to the dining-

hall, to include the kitchen staff and the sweepers as well. I would attend the morning

prayer whenever possible. This brought about the feeling that the work of each person in

the staff of the Association, was equally valuable to God and the YWCA.

A room in the main corridor was inaugurated by a priest, to be a prayer room. It’s

heart- warming to see chappals outside the room at times, knowing that someone is inside

praying!

I must use this opportunity to thank all the Board members, who assisted and co-

operated with me in the work of the Association. I particularly want to thank the General

Secretary for keeping me informed of all the day to day events in the ‘Y’, and for executing

her role efficiently and sincerely.

The National Elections are over and India can truly be proud of her sustained

democracy, and the smooth way in which power was transferred from the ruling party to

the opposition candidate.

It is the World Football season, and the ecstasy of the winners in each match is

contagious. What we learn from these matches is that team spirit and hardwork are the

ingredients to success.

May the elected body of our Association every year, emulate these valuable traits.

Dear Friends,

This is the last issue of “Kiran”, with myself as the editor. Yet

another Election is around the corner. The YWCA implores each

and every one of you Members to exercise your franchise. It is

time to bid adieu to the present Board of Management as they

bow out in August and for the newly elected Board to take over.

A huge round of applause to congratulate Molly Kochamma

and her Board for the superlative job they have done under her

exemplary, efficient guidance. Let me profusely thank all those

who contributed their excellent articles:

That what can be imagined, can be achieved. While one must dare to dream, there is

no substitute for perseverance, hard work and team work. No one achieves anything alone.

While we commemorate the events and the individuals who achieved them, we must not

forget the sacrifices of those who make these achievements possible through their time,

tireless energy and unparalleled enthusiasm to do the maximum amount of good for as

many people as possible.

Immediately after the National elections, the first blow came in the form of railway

charges being almost doubled. Next to do the honours are petrol, diesel and L.P.G. promising

skyrocketing hikes in the prices, of all commodities. The former sentence was written a

few days before the aforementioned price hikes became a reality. So now I actually have

to change what I have previously written, like this- The prices of petrol, diesel and L.P.G.

have been hiked, promising skyrocketing prices for all essential commodities, in a domino

effect, one leading to the other, unfailingly. Within a month after the elections, the Centre

has done exactly what the former Administration did, which the new Administration had

protested wildly when they were the Opposition party. They have raised prices and said

exactly what the previous Administration said when they were “planning” to raise prices of

petroleum. So obviously they cannot keep their word and can do whatever they like which

they had accused the previous Administration. Are we really better off with the new

Administration as one is led to believe that they are sincere in their efforts or are we being

hood winked? It may be only a prefunctory effort, one wonders. What is blatantly evident

is that no matter who rule, the outcome is almost always the same. It is destined to break

the backs of the Indian consumer. What is confounding is that no one is raising even a little

finger to protest, instead of the usual incendiary devices like hartals and bandhs, a threat

to limb and property by a few insurgents who usually need no provocation, to wield power

into their hands, knowing very well that no price would ever come down once they were up,

all futile. Only time will tell the future.

In this world of seemingly, insurmountable conflicts, it is easy to say, be satisfied with

what we have. A strong unassailable faith in God will tide us over many a problem. I thank

the Almighty for blessing me to be born as the daughter of my wonderful, loving parents,

who taught me to have steadfast faith in the Lord, the right values, made me proud to be a

woman, given equal opportunities as my brothers, to help the needy, to look at the brighter

side of life, to remain cheerful in adversities and to be content with all the blessings showered

by God, no matter how despondent things looked.

Thankyou Almighty Lord for all the Blessings that you have bestowed upon us and not

to make us dwell on our inequities.

Happenings in the’Y’

a. A Medical Camp was conducted in the Nagampadom colony, with Dr. Dean John

and Dr. Usha Puthiode in charge along with two House Surgeons. 58 persons attended the

camp and free medicines were given to all.

b. Tiles were paved on all 3 floors of the Student’s Hostel, as well as finishing all

painting and repairing. All the pipe lines in the Hostel were repaired, the Mess Hall was

painted and all maintenance work in the Thanal Building was finished, A new sturdy gate

was fixed for the side road entrance and the height of the compound wall at the back of the

Y.W.C.A. was raised by 3 feet.

c. During the last 3 months 125 clients came for help, 101 stayed at the Thanal withfree stay and food, 34 cases are continuing to come and 6 missing persons were broughtby the Police; The Thanal Committee Chairperson Sereena G. Eapen and Mrs. KochuraniAbraham in charge of Thanal went for the Advisory Board meeting at the office of the S.P.Legal help was given to 14 clients, 5 petitions were given to different Police Stations and

one to the office of the Dy S.P. They visited Immanual Child Home and Gracy’s Home. A

daily report book, attendance register for clients, Accounts book and files on clients are

kept up to date. There was even a case from Malapuram.

d. When the need arises the Committee sees to the revising of salary, change in time

of work hours and the sanction of leave for all the staff of the Y.W.C.A.

e. Bible classes are conducted every second wednesday, regularly. Different priests

are invited for each class. An inter group Bible Quiz Competition on St. John’s Gospel will

be held on July 30th.

f. An awareness and counselling class on drug abuse was held at M.D. School, through

a member of Care & Share Foundation, jointly conducted by the Foundation and the Y.W.C.A.

ducted at the Y.W.C.A.

g. The Committee contacted all the Members who had not paid their dues and col-

lected the fees. They compiled the electoral list and sent it to the Nominating Committee.

two Hostels. The problems are solved after discussing with the Matron and the concerned

A programme was conducted by PASI on Waste Management

for flats and small house on 25th June 2014 at the YWCA.

The programme began with a prayer by Mrs Susan Punnoose

followed by a welcome by the President, Mrs Molly Benjamin. She

began by saying that World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th

June but as the YWCA holds general programmes of this kind on

the 4th Wednesday of the month, we are having this programme on

the 25th June. She warmly welcomed the speakers, Dr. Pravin

Ittycheria, Engineer Jairaj and the representatives of various flats

in Kottayam. The Chief Guest was supposed to be the Municipal

Chairman, Mr. M.P. Santosh Kumar but he was urgently summoned to Trivandrum and

was therefore being represented by Mrs Jancy Jacob, Chairperson of the Public Works

Committee.

Dr. Pravin Ittycheria, an environment activist began by saying that Malayalees by

nature are very conscious of their rights but not of their duties. He enumerated the five

main problems of Kottayam - the Vadavathoor municipal dump, the drain from K K Road

and Shastri Road that empties into the Meenachil River without any treatment, the medical

waste from the Medical College, which is being dumped in the Meenachil, waste from the

chicken and meat shops that have no specific place for disposal. He suggested that each

person do his/her bit to dispose waste responsibly instead of looking to the municipality all

the time. Flats should set up biogas units for their degradable waste and also maintain

their own kitchen gardens to produce organic vegetables for their personal use.

Mrs Jancy Jacob said that waste management is a problem across India. Classes are

being conducted in all municipal wards on segregation and disposal of waste but the public

are not doing their bit to keep their town clean. She suggested that everyone use cloth

bags when they go shopping and refuse plastic bags which are clogging our town. No

permission is being given to flat construction unless there is a provision for waste

management.

Engineer Jairaj said that each person on an average generated 250 gms of waste a

day. Thus a family of 4 generated a kilo of waste a day. The biodegradable waste should

be converted to compost. The non-biodegradable waste can be recycled. Reject waste i.e.

diapers, sanitary napkins etc should be incinerated. There are various types of incinerators

and each set of flats can select one that suits their needs. A waste destroyer takes only 5ft

X 5ft of space and does not generate any fumes. He said he could be contacted at Parisudh

By this time the Municipal Chairman, Mr. M.P. Santosh Kumar was able to make it to

the venue and spoke about the efforts the Kottayam Municipality was making to dispose of

waste and make Kottayam a clean and healthy town. He also answered queries and

problems raised by several of the flat residents.

My First Experience As A Board Member

I became the member of Kottayam YWCA in 2007 after my

retirement from the Kerala State Electricity Board. I was put in the

Kripa Group. Till then I knew only the full name of “YWCA” nothing

more than that. In Kripa Group some of my friends were there. So

I didn’t feel any strangeness in the early days. Every second

wednesday I used to go for the group meeting. Group meetings

were very interesting and informative. As days went by in 2012 there

was the Board Election. One early morning the nominating

committee chairperson Mrs. Accamma Eapen telephoned me and

said “You are nominated for the Board Election. Are you willing to

stand for the election?” Hearing this I was amazed and did not know what to say. With

courage I answered “yes”. Only very few members of YWCA knew me. When results

came, by the grace of God I was elected and I was appointed as the religious committee

chairperson. Our President, our dear Mollykochamma was of great help to me in carrying

out my duties as the chairperson of the religious committee. She encouraged me a lot. As

such I owe a great deal to her. Every first wednesday there was the Board Meeting. At first

I was very much tensed to attend the Board Meeting. Gradually many became friendly.

Thinking of the past two years I am very much proud in being a Board Member of Kottayam

YWCA.

I thank God for all the help He gave me in fulfilling my responsibilities and also want to

thank all those who supported me. May the Lord Almighty bless us to do better in the years

to come.

I had the opportunity to work with Presidents Mrs Vimla Abraham and Mrs Molly

Benjamin. I compare the former one with Mrs Kiran Bedi IPS, the efficient beaurocrat of

Indian Police service and the latter with Mrs Meera kumar the efficient speaker of 15th

Loksabha.

Both are able administraters dedicated to the welfare of the YWCA.

Ingredients

Fish pieces - 1 kg.

Masala

Chilli powder - 2 tbsp

Ginger - a big piece

Garlic - 12 cloves

Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp

Salt to taste

Peppercorns - 15 to 20

For Rice

Basmati rice - 41/2 cups

Cloves - 7 Cinnamon - 5 pieces

Cardamom - 2 Water - 9 cups

Salt to taste

To Saute

Onion - 6 medium Ginger - 11/2 piece

Garlic - 40 cloves Green chillies - 7

WHAT’S COOKING?

FISH BIRIYANI

Cinnamon - 4 pieces Chilli powder - 2 tsp

Tomato - 4 medium Coriander leaves - a bunch

Mint leaves - half a bunch Amul butter - 50 gm

Salt to taste Ghee

Method

Grind masala ingredients and smear on fish pieces. Keep aside for an hour. Can increase

or decrease masala amount as desired. Fry fish pieces till brown on both sides in a little oil

and keep aside. Wash and drain rice. Saute half of the spices for rice in a little ghee and

then fry the rice for a few minutes. Boil water, add salt to taste and add rice and the rest of

the spices. Cover and cook on low fire till the water is absorbed. Take off the fire and spread

in a flat dish and cool. Add Amul butter and some ghee to the oil left over after frying the

fish. Slice onions and crush ginger, green chillies and garlic separately. Chop coriander

leaves and mint-leaves. Heat the ghee mixture and saute onions till light brown. Add spices

and saute a minute. Saute ginger half a minute, then green chillies and then the garlic.

When smell comes add chilli powder and saute a minute. Add chopped tomatoes, saute a

little and then add the chopped leaves. Add a little water and salt to taste. When just boiling

add fried fish pieces and boil a few minutes, take off the fire. Grease a dish and layer rice

and fish finishing with rice on top. Pour a little ghee on top of the rice. Cover with a wet

cloth, put lid and bake for 45 minutes. Serve hot.

ICED ORANGESIngredients

Ripe oranges - 8 nos Juice of one lime

Water - 1 cup Sugar - 3/4 cup

Egg yolk - 2 Cream - 1 cup

Method

Wipe oranges clean. Cut off tops and carefully scoop out flesh from both tops and bottoms.

Keep six of the oranges tied up in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Keep two oranges aside.

Squeeze 1 cup juice from the orange pulp. Boil sugar and water 10 minutes. Cool and add

both juices and beaten egg yolks. Add the juices as soon as they are squeezed. Return to

heat and cook for 5 minutes, on low heat, stirring continuously. Cool and set in freezer in a

covered dish. When lightly set take out of freezer and beat with a fork. Grate the rind from

the two oranges kept aside. Whip the cream and add to the mixture along with the rind.

Freeze again for three hours. Take out and beat once again. One hour before serving, take

out the six orange shells and fill with the mixture. Fix the top at an angle and freeze again.

Serve in a tray decorated with cleaned mint leaves and flowers.
