    INSPIRE A SHARED VISION

Good leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own thevision, and relentlessly drive it to completion. Jack Welch

Inspire a Shared Vision has two key components: vision and shared. o be an effective leader, you must have agoal that clearly defines what you are working toward; this is your vision. Your vision must be clear and com-pelling enough to convince others to believe in it. Tis shared vision means others identiy with your causeand are personally invested in it, leading to stronger commitment and cooperation, and a unified direction.

    CREATING OUR VISION

    My definition o leadership:

    CHALLENGE THE PROCESS

Tere are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why?I dream of things that never were, and ask why not? Robert Kennedy

Leaders are not simply likable people who do good deeds. Leaders distinguish themselves in their willingnessto challenge the process, to break away rom the typical or accepted state o things, and lead the way into newunchartered areas. Change comes rom seeing flaws in the system and acting to do things differently.

ENABLE OTHERS TO ACTTe task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the

greatness is there already. John Buchan

As John Donne said, no man is an island. Leaders need other people to help implement new ideas and sup-port their plan. For it to be possible to make a real difference, leaders must empower others to take the stepstoward change. By understanding the different kinds o people they are working with, knowing how groupsoperate, and clearly defining goals, leaders enable others to act.

    YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCE

    WORKSHOP FOUR

    HIGHLY EFFECTIVE GROUPS

    1. Strong Leadership

A strong leader understands that the strength lies in his team and not his own individual abilities. He/she isnot araid o strong team members; instead, the success o each team member is o the utmost importance tothe leader. A leader holds his/her team to high standards that are clearly defined. Communication is open soeach member knows where he/she stands. Members that are perorming are recognized publicly, and mem-bers who need to be redirected are approached privately. A leader provides support or all team members andosters a eeling o amily.

    2. rust

Tere needs to be trust between team members and trust in the leader. Tere also needs to be trust in every-

ones commitment to the common goal. Tis way no one doubts another members motives, and criticism istaken as constructive since it is given to help better pursue the groups overarching purpose.

    3. RespectRespect must shape every interaction between members in a group. Tere can be conflicting opinions or un-damental differences between group members, but as long as each member is personally respectul, the groupcan work through or maneuver around any challenges. Also, part o respect is earned by contributing to thegroup. So appreciating everyones role can help oster additional respect or one another.

    4. Unity

A highly effective team is connected by their common purpose. Tey recognize the group as an unbreakable

entity that moves, as a whole, toward its goal. Tere is a prevailing eeling o loyalty, and all members under-stand that the success o the group is everyones motivation.

    5. Complementary SkillsHaving complementary skills means that everyone brings something to the table. It is the idea o synergy; thata group is greater than the sum o its parts. Being part o a complementary team where people have differentskills, and support one another, members are not araid to admit what they dont know or make a mistake.Because they know exactly how they contribute, and are respected or it, members dont eel they have to proveanything and thus can be uninhibited in making suggestions and trying new things.

    14

    WORKSHOP FOUR

    6. Open CommunicationTrough openly communicating, teams can define roles, provide helpul eedback, or assess problems. It isessential that team members are comortable approaching one another and that they can be receptive whenapproached. It is important each team member is comortable communicating so they can give and receiveeedback, keep others inormed, and ask or help when needed.

    7. Lack of SelfishnessMembers o highly effective teams are not out seeking credit. Tey are not in competition with other members, but instead look to help each other. A leader who emphasizes cooperation and group achievement over indi-vidual achievement promotes this supportive environment. o be highly effective, sometimes members have tobe willing to step out o the spotlight. Since they know they are valuable, and appreciated, members are able to

act unselfishly or the sake o the team.
