RHOS ON SEA R hos on Sea also known as Llandrillo-yn-Rhos sits in the shadow of the hill known as Bryn Euryn on the Western edge of the Bay of Colwyn, and between

the towns of Penrhyn Bay to the West and Colwyn Bay to the East. It is popu-

lar not only for its beautiful scenery but for its history, its wonderful prome-

nade and its thriving shopping centre, some of the most popular being fea-

    tured in the following pages.

Bryn Euryn is a hill overlooking Rhos-on-Sea on which there are the remains of a hill fort called Dinerth, the 'fort of the bear', and a limestone quarry Ednyfed Fychan , 13th century seneschal to Llywelyn the Great and ancestor to the House of Tudor was granted the land and built a castle on the hill, of which all traces have disappeared, and a manor, Llys Euryn of which the ruins of its 15th centu-ry reconstruction can be seen today.

St Trillo's Chapel In Rhos is the 6th century St Trillo's Church, (Llandrillo yn Rhos) which was the mother church of a large parish which included places as far apart as Eglwysbach and Eglwys Rhos (Llan Rhos). The chapelon by the sea is on the site of a pre-Christian, sacred holy well; the altar is built directly over the pure water of the well. St Trillo, the son of Ithel Hael from Llydaw (Snowdonia) who also founded a church at another place called Llandrillo in Denbighshire. Trillo's brother Tygai (Llandygai) founded a church near Penrhyn Bangor; their sister Llechid founded a church (Llanllechid)

Rhos Fynach In 1186 Llywelyn the Great permitted the establishment of the Cistercian Aberconwy Abbey, and the monks built a fishing weir on the sea shore below Bryn Euryn. The place became known as Rhos Fynach, heath of the monks. In a charter of 1230 Llywelyn sanctioned the purchase by Ednyfed Fychan of land at Rhos Fynach and in 1289 the abbey moved to Maenan and the weir was ceded to Ednyfed's estate. Eventually Rhos Fynach and the weir came into the hands of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who in 1575 granted it to a Captain Morgan, a privateer, for services rendered against the enemies of Queen Elizabeth I at sea. (This is not the famous pirate of the Caribbean Captain Henry Morgan who lived in the century following).

The weir continued to provide a prosperous livelihood through to the early 20th century: during a single night in 1850, 35,000 herring were caught, and 10 tons of mackerel were removed in one tide as late as 1907. Because such weirs deci-mated inshore fish stocks, Parliament banned them in 1861 unless it could be shown they pre-dated the Magna Carta, which the then owners, the Parry Evans family, were able to prove. Their estate included Rhos Fynach house, also known as Rhos Farm, on the Promenade near St Trillo's Chapel. The house is now a very popular pub and restaurant. Its date of construction is not known for sure, but it is considered to have been started by the Cistercians before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The fishing weir fell into disuse during World War I and most traces have disappeared. Trial excavation of the site in 1993 recorded constructions carbon 14-dated between 1500 and 1660.

Madog and claims for the discovery of America

Perhaps Rhos-on-Sea's greatest claim to fame is that, according to legend, Madog ap Owain Gwynedd, a Welsh prince of Gwynedd, sailed from here in 1170 and discovered America, over three hundred years before Christopher Columbus's famous voyage in 1492. This event is recorded by a plaque on one of the properties on the sea-front.

Take part in Red Nose Day 2011

With Red Nose Day fast approaching on Friday, 18

March 2011, the entire nation is gearing up to do

    something funny for money!

The aim is simple - to have a laugh, raise tons of cash and transform

    lives.

All the money raised and donated by the public goes directly towards

projects that change people's lives across Africa and at home

    in the UK.

Across the UK your cash can help to provide comfort for iso-

lated older people and give young carers their childhoods

back. In fact it is likely you are never more than 30 miles from

    a Comic Relief supported project.

through. Season to taste with salt and freshly

S t Davids Day (Dydd Gyl Dewi Sant) is the Feast of St David the Patron Saint of Wales and falls on 1 March each year. The date of 1 March was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint

David on that day in 589. The date was declared a national day of

celebration within Wales in the 18th century.

Dewi Sant St. David was born towards the end of the fifth century. He was a scion of the royal house of Cered-

igion, and founded a Celtic monastic community at Glyn Rhosin (The Vale of Roses) on the western headland of

Sir Benfro, at the spot where St Davids Cathedral stands today. David's fame as a teacher and ascetic spread

throughout the Celtic world. His foundation at Glyn Rhosin became an important Christian shrine, and the most

important centre in Wales. The date of Dewi Sant's death is recorded as 1 March, but the year is uncertain

possibly 588. As his tearful monks prepared for his death St David uttered these words: 'Brothers be ye constant.

The yoke which with single mind ye have taken, bear ye to the end; and whatsoever ye have seen with me and

    heard, keep and fulfil'.

For centuries the first of March has been a national festival. St David was recognised as a national patron

saint at the height of Welsh resistance to the Normans.

In 2003 in the United States, St. David's Day was recognised officially as the national day of the Welsh,

and on 1 March the Empire State Building was floodlit in the national colours, red, green and white.

It is invariably celebrated by Welsh societies throughout the world with dinners, parties, recitals and

    concerts.

To celebrate this day, people wear a symbol of either a leek, or daffodil. The leek arises from an

occasion when a troop of Welsh were able to distinguish each other from a troop of English enemy

dressed in similar fashion by wearing leeks. An alternative emblem developed in recent years is the

    daffodil.

W hats white, has two protruding humps and

goes like the clappers? No, not Katie

Price, silly, its this of course, the Porsche

Boxster Spyder. Sorry, that really was uncalled for,

especially when were in the presence of an all-time

great because thats exactly what the Boxster

    Spyder is.

At first some people might find it hard to work out

what the point of it is. Porsche has stripped it of most

niceties like door handles and it does without an

electric roof, replaced instead by a rudimentary piece of

canvas and cling film stapled to the bodywork. Even

Porsche admits only around 100 will find homes in the

    UK each year.

But then you get behind the wheel and everything

instantly makes sense. This Porsche is a drivers dream

and on the incredible Welsh roads where we tested the

Boxster it was a sheer delight.

At first it feels twitchy, on edge, alive. The steering

has so much feel, its light and wriggles in your hands

and that takes some time to get used to. But settle in,

tune into the sensations and feedback this stunning

Spyder is transmitting and it rewards you with a drive of

    your life.

Power comes in linear and fast. That 3.4-litre,

320bhp unit is a gem and, coupled with the Spyder diet,

produces impressive performance figures. The sprint to

60mph is dispatched in 5.1 seconds and the way it

translates that power into forward momentum so easily

will have you beaming from ear to ear.

    What makes the Spyder

so good is the fact it can

    utilise every single one

    of its 320 horses,

    efficiently and

    effectively. Higher-

    powered sports cars will

    out-drag it on the straights,

but point the Porsche towards some twisties and itll

keep up with pretty much anything. We just wish it

sounded more potent the sports exhaust option is a

    must.

However, its not just about whats under that

shapely hood. This car looks positively stunning too. In

the ice white paintwork our test car came in, it was a

crowd-gatherer and those two rear humps behind the

headrests have a distinct air of Carrera GT about them.

We even managed to nail taking that roof off. Yes,

it is more complicated than an electric set-up, but with

practise we got the process down to about two minutes.

Fair enough thats not exactly quick and you wouldnt

want to get caught in a downpour but the hood is

where Porsche has achieved most of the weight saving.

The biggest problem we can see with this Porsche

though is the name. The Boxster part in its title just

doesnt fit. This car is good enough and unique

enough to have earned its own name altogether. Its a

brilliant piece of engineering and one of the all-time

Porsche greats why then, hasnt the maker christened

it properly? By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer

The Internet is coming to a TV near you

    Goggle Box or Google Box?

    WHY

    THREE OPTIONS

What do Apple, Google, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony and LG have in common? They along with seemingly every other electronics firm on the planet would like to connect your TV to the Internet.

So why on Earth would you want such a thing? The short answer is choice: depending on the system you choose, you can access video on demand from every broadcaster you can think of, rent videos, watch YouTube or catch up with people on Facebook from the comfort of your sofa.

If that sounds enormously complicated, thats because it is: were in the very early stages of connected TV, and as a result there are lots of competing visions of the future. Youd need to be pretty brave to drop 1,000-plus on an Internet-enabled TV when its not entirely clear which technology will triumph.

That doesnt mean you cant join in the fun now, though: set-top boxes and connected Blu-Ray players give you the fun of connected TV without the expense of a whole new set. An Apple TV is 99, Logitechs Google TV-powered Revue should cost around 200 and an Internet-friendly Blu-Ray player such as Samsungs BD-C6900 is around 250 online. If you buy one of those and Internet TV turns out to be a passing fad, at least youll still have a top-end player for your Blu-Ray discs.

    EARLY STAGES

There are three main kinds of connected TV kit:

There are connected TVs, such as Sonys Bravias, Panasonics connected Viera sets, Samsungs Internet@TV and LGs SmartTVs.

There are set-top boxes such as Apples Apple TV, Internet-enabled Blu-Ray players and Google TV devices such as the Logitech Revue.

And then there are games consoles: Microsofts Xbox 360, Sonys PlayStation 3 and Nintendos Wii.

Of the three options the consoles are the most limited: theyre designed for gaming first and foremost, so any TV-related features are pretty basic. In the case of the Wii you get

YouTube; top-end Samsung TVs offer not just Facebook but video chat using Skype; Google TV devices offer CNN and all the major UK catch-up services such as 4oD and ITV Player, not to mention regional variations including uTVs uPlayer.

There are also important differences in the way TVs and set-top boxes handle your existing media, such as home movies. Sony equipment, Windows PCs and other devices can communicate via the DLNA standard (Digital Living Network Alliance, a standard for transferring media between different bits

of kit), but the Apple TV can only access your content if its on a PC or Mac running iTunes. If you dont fancy leaving your computer running all the time, then the Apple TV isnt for you.

TVs and set-top boxes are much more interesting, but there are big differences between different firms offerings. Apple TV does YouTube and iTunes movie rentals but not services such as iPlayer or LoveFilm; Microsofts Xbox 360 offers Sky (if youre a Sky subscriber) but doesnt offer iPlayer or

    Red Lipstick

Nothing says sexy quite like red lipstick and the colour is as popular now as it has ever been. Although many women say they wont wear it because it doesnt suit them, its usually the rest of their makeup that is wrong.

Firstly take it really easy on both eye makeup and blusher, otherwise youll risk looking like a clown. Dont use eyeliner and take care that your mascara isnt giving you an over the top false-eyelash effect. Dust your face with a blemish smoothing powder and your cheeks with a soft blush in a fairly neutral colour.

Secondly not all reds are equal. Tone your lipstick choice to your complexion choosing a

plum shade if you have pink tones or a warmer red-brown if you look more sallow. If you feel the red youve bought isnt quite right, try blending in another lipstick you know does suit

you so its nearer to your usual colours.

Thirdly, dont overdo it. Red lips, red clothes, red nails and red

accessories will give you entirely the wrong sort of allure. The lips need to be the main feature and as far as practical everything else should be neutral.

Fourthly, red lipstick does have a tendency to bleed so using lip liner

or a lipstick sealer is a must.

Finally, if you are older youll find that your lips are narrower than they once were and strong dark shades of red can accentuate that. If you had thin lips even in your youth, you might find that red really doesnt work for you. If

    BEAUTY

    Self-tanning

The danger of sitting out in the sun is well documented and, in any case, the UK isnt blessed with a steady supply of the natural option. But self-tanning options have really improved in recent years and from just a few s you can gain a completely natural tan.

If you just need colour on a small area such as your face, a home self-tan is an ideal option. If you havent tried any of the available lotions recently then you wont know how light or dark the results will be, so you should do a 24 hour patch test.

Choose a small area of skin that really

wont notice e.g. on your stomach and apply some of the product. Take care not to cover the area for the first hour or so otherwise the lotion will just rub off and give you a false reading. One

of the key things to remember when doing home tanning is

that its imperative to wash your hands post treatment orange fingers really isnt a good look.

While this is ideal for small body areas, if you

want greater coverage legs, arms, back then

using a salon is a must. Not only can they reach all those

difficult areas, but the tan will be more even. With the right skin preparation and with someone else applying the tan (either a lotion or spray), not only will you have better results but it will last

Its always nice to have a bit of extra cash set aside each month for savings, emergencies, or just a little treat now and then. Here, weve listed eight easy ways to put some money back in your

    pocket, without doing overtime.

    1) Ebay. Start by selling any unnecessary clutter

around the house, then see if any neighbours or friends have anything which they dont need and offer to list it for them for a small commission. If you dont mind doing the leg work, you could be on to a nice little earner whilst helping your friends out too!

    2) Hobbies. Do you make great cakes? Enjoy crafting your own greetings cards?

Have a passion for photog-raphy? You can make money

by hiring out your services. Birthday cakes, wedding invitations and family portraits can be a great way to do what you love and get paid for it.

    3) Mystery shopping. Shop-ping in disguise and provid-ing feedback on the quality of service and customer care of retailers is a great way to earn vouchers, discounts or cash.

    4) Babysitting. Its not just a job for teenagers. Get paid to sit in somebodys house and watch television, read or surf the net and earn around 8 an hour, which can mount up on dates like Valentines Day and New Years Eve. Houses and pets need sitting too when their owners are on holiday, so theres plenty of demand!

    5) Party planning. There are lots of companies who need representa-tives to host parties which endorse their products, such as Pampered Chef and

Ann Summers (not for the faint hearted!). Check there isnt already a representative in your area when you enquire.

    6) Count votes. Register with your councils election office and earn a nice sum when the next election comes around.

    7) Life modelling. Feeling brave? If you dont mind standing still in your birthday suit for an hour or so, this is a great way of increas-ing your bank balance and your confidence! Sign up to a reputable agency and enquire at local art colleges. All shapes and sizes are welcome, all you need is the ability to hold a pose.

    8) Get online. Blogging, reviewing or becoming an online researcher can bring in the pennies, which soon mount up. If youre into photography, many sites will take photo-graphs and youll receive royalties each time they are used.

March Spring is here; spring is here! Life is skittles, and life is beer. I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.

I do. Dont you? Course you do!

S o sang the great American humourist Tom Lehrer, echoing what many of us feel in March as hedgerows sprout a pale green fuzz of new foliage, daffodils blow their golden trumpets in gardens and verges, and various mammalian species feel the first stirrings of the reproductive urge. As a young man in Montgomeryshire this was the time of year when I loved to wander the fields, lonely as the proverbial cloud, watching the earth slowly coming back to life. My favourite sight in those days was to see hares rearing up on their hind legs, scrapping away furiously like furry little Thai boxers; I used to think these combats were between competitive males, but I now learn that the fights are actually between does who arent yet ready to mate and jacks who most decidedly are. So like the discos of my student years!

The sense of newness prompted by all this rising sap was once officially reflected in the turning pages of the calendar. The Romans regarded the year as starting on the Kalends (or first) of March until 46BC when Julius Caesar introduced the new Julian calendar, which counted the year from the January Kalends. Christianity, however, spread from the Eastern Mediterranean where the Julian calendar had never really caught on, and after the fall of the Western Empire in the fifth century the computation of the New Year gradually reverted to the spring and, in particular, the Feast of the Annunciation, or Lady Day, or 25th March.

I dont know about you, but I much prefer the idea that the year starts in spring. Because it does, really, doesnt it? Nothing actually changes on 1st January, and it seems to me to be a terribly arbitrary and artificial date to mark something as important as casting off the old and welcoming the new. Catkins and crocuses and lambs are much more tangible, and quite literally organic, indicators of renewal: why not set our calendars by them, rather than by the decrees of Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory?

For it was the latter gentleman who, in 1582, recognised the deficiencies of the Julian calendar and introduced its far more accurate Gregorian successor, which is actually only 26 seconds out. Pope Gregory didnt actually invent it himself he was a theologian, not a mathematician but merely gave official sanction to a timetable many people were already using. Scotland, rather oddly for a country whose Reformation had been so thorough, took to this Papist innovation as early as 1600; in England and Wales the year was counted from 25th March until 1752, when we finally and rather reluctantly standardised on the Gregorian calendar. This is why the date of the execution of Charles I was recorded, at the time, as January 1648 but we regard as having been January 1649; and indeed why the date of the Calendar Act, which introduced the change, is variously given as 1750 and 1751.

Not everything changed, though: bankers and businessmen continued and continue to regard Lady Day as the beginning of their year; and I too continue to regard late March as being the true turn

    The Power of Networking

H undreds of people get up at the crack of dawn in the morning to do it, others wait until lunchtime while yet more people do it in the evening or online. What is it? Networking. From business breakfasts to wine bar soires, people all over the country are networking together, making new contacts and expanding the contents of their address books.

Youll know a great networker when you meet one. They are the first people to shout I do! when they overhear someone asking does anyone know of a good plumber?, or asking for a great painter and decorator or a good restaurant to take their elderly parents to. Good networkers listen and they learn, making a mental note of people who they like and who they would like to stay in touch with. They are the Cilla Blacks of the business world, connecting people who may be able to help each other or who they think may have a common interest or bond.

From plumbers to printers, solicitors to accountants good networking benefits people in every sector and in every size of company. Done effectively its not just about randomly passing out your business cards, rather its about face to face contact, about actively listening and about asking the right questions about another persons business. Effective networking offers you exposure to people from all walks of life, to all sorts of businesses and it gets your name out into the business community.

Organised networking groups exist all over the country and offer their members benefits on many levels. Going along to visit a group can be a great way for people to dip their toes in the water of meeting and greeting new people. Existing members will usually watch out for new faces and step in to help anyone who is standing by themselves with introductions to other members of the group. Networking doesnt come naturally to some people and a structured environment can help with any first time nerves.

For home based businesses the opportunity to get out of the office once a week and meet with other people can be a source of huge support; for others membership can offer a co-operative where

the other members act almost like a larger company behind each individual member. Sole traders and self employed members especially can call upon the services of the members of their groups and find themselves with, for example, a design department, an accounts department, an IT department and a marketing department whose work they understand and trust because they meet the same people each week. Highly successful and lucrative groups tend to work very well when members from particular sectors join and work together, for example when a printer passes work to a designer, a builder to a plumber, decorator and carpet fitter. In recent years networking has moved beyond the breakfast table or the wine bar to the online world with sites like LinkedIn and Twitter spreading the word of individual businesses far beyond the confines of town and county. The basis of this virtual networking is based upon the same principles as face-to-face meetings: its about finding people with whom you have things in common, about shared interests or bonds and adding them to your network of contacts. Networking - its not what you know, but who.

    HEALTH

How to avoid getting ill Nobody likes coming down with something, so here are our ten top tips to help you keep the bugs at bay! 1) Get plenty of sleep. Some quality shut-eye can do wonders when it comes to bolstering your immune system. You should be aiming for between 7-9 hours a night. 2) Clean up. Although bugs and viruses are often transmitted from person to per-son, germs lurk around things that we touch every day door handles, light switches, taps, telephones and com-puters. Take steps to sanitise these objects and surfaces regularly.

    3) Wash your hands properly. A quick rinse under the cold tap wont do. We pick up bugs and viruses from things we touch, so make sure you give your hands the full soap and warm water treatment regularly - and especially before you eat. 4) Drink, drink, drink. Try and get through about 1.5 litres of water a day keeping hydrated flushes toxins out of your system. 5) Eat right. Lots of lovely (washed) fruit and veg, and plenty of colours on your plate will help prevent illness. Give your body what it needs to fight off infection, including essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. 6) Whats mine is mine. Dont share drinks, make-up or cutlery with other people, even if

theyre your best friend. Its the easiest way to pass it on. 7) Hands off! Dont touch your face - that includes rubbing your eyes, licking your fingers and fiddling with spots. Your face is the main entrance to your body for germs and bacteria, so keep your mitts off and keep them out! 8) Get some fresh air. Being outdoors and getting some exercise is a fantastic way to blow off the cobwebs and strengthen your immunity to colds and flu. Simple, gentle and regular exercise can make a big impact upon your health in general. 9) Avoid poorly people. If someone is sneezing and coughing all over you, move away. Its easy enough to avoid exposure to people who are ill just make sure youre polite about it! 10) Choose a supplement. Vitamin C, zinc and Echinacea are great for supporting your immune system. Do bear in mind that taking a multivitamin is not a replacement for a healthy diet.

    Flooring

When you choose new flooring take some time thinking and planning before you buy. Decide what fits your lifestyle and taste. The style of flooring you select depends on many considerations. There are so many different flooring options available that sometimes it can get a bit confusing. A floor covering you choose for a kitchen will not necessarily be suitable for the living room.

The most important aspect of your choice is what traffic does the area have? You need a floor covering that doesnt show wear, will be comfortable and easy to maintain. Well-trodden areas such as hallways need a more durable flooring than, for example, a guest room carpet. The bathroom floor needs to be waterproof. Vinyl tiles or linoleum, warmed up with a rug or two, is

    ideal.

Wooden or laminate floors look stylish and are easy to clean, but can be slippery, and while stone tiles look attractive, they can be cold. Carpet is by far the most popular choice and gives an enormous range of

textures, colours and styles. Unless you are skilled in doing so, dont be tempted to lay the floor yourself. For a professional finish,

D affodil is the common name for all members of the genus Narcissus of which there are around 13,000 hybrids. The familiar golden heads with their distinctive trumpets come in all sizes from 12 cm to 60 cm. Colours are many and varied; some trumpets are the same colour as the star-shaped background while others are contrasting shades. Overwhelmingly the main colour is yellow, but there are orange, white, pink and green cultivars too.

The daffodil is a perennial plant grown from a bulb. Plant large, good quality bulbs in September or October at a depth of three times the bulbs height. Deadhead after flowering but dont remove the leaves. The bulb recharges itself through its foliage and needs the leaves to photosynthesise, so dont tie them into knots either. Once the foliage dies back, you can cut it if you must, but in nature the leaves go into the soil to provide extra nutrients for the bulb.

All parts of the daffodil are poisonous. The bulbs, sometimes mistaken for onions, can lead to accidental poisoning if eaten and the sticky sap from the cut stems can cause dermatitis in some people - wear gloves to pick them. The beauty and gentle perfume of the daffodil is well worth the effort and care.

plannings going to be the only quiet part

So for two whole weeks we want the nation to get loud and proud about

Fairtrade by asking everyone to Show off your label.' People love showing off

about Fairtrade tell the world about your cake made extra special by using

Fairtrade sugar and spice, your most tempting bottle of wine, your comfiest

pants. We want to load the FAIRTRADE Mark with meaning, telling them the

tangible difference Fairtrade makes to producers.

There will be a much needed focus on cotton. Cotton can carry our Fairtrade

message far beyond a slogan on a t-shirt. Cottons link to the fashion industry,

and its place in our lifestyles, means that the potential impact of our cotton

focus goes well beyond the category itself. www.fairtrade.org.uk/fortnight

C arers Outreach Service is a local voluntary organisation which supports unpaid adult carers. There is a lot of confusion surrounding the title carer because paid workers, who were previously known as home helps and foster parents, were both re-christened as home carers and care givers. However, the original carers who are the focus of Carers Outreach

Service differ in many ways. Perhaps the following job description says it best:

Job description: Carer Salary: All the benefits you are successful in obtaining Start date: The day you are needed. No references needed. No probationary period. Responsibilities: Feeding, washing, dressing, laundering, shopping, driving, administering medication etc. Ignoring all social invitations. You must not worry. You must remain in excellent health. Hours of work: 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 52 weeks a year. No overtime pay Holidays: None Sick pay: None

Although this sounds harsh, many people find themselves taking on the role of carer, without any prior knowledge of carers rights and issues and no training for the role. Caring scenarios are various and many, some examples are: a retired couple where one partner devel-ops dementia or suffers a stroke or other debilitating illness, new parents who suddenly have to face the challenge of raising a child who has additional needs, working families who juggle work with caring for elderly and frail relatives, the list is endless.

Carers Outreach Service has centres across North Wales in Colwyn Bay, Bangor, Penrhyndeudraeth and Llangefni which provide infor-

mation and support for carers. We know that caring can be difficult. Our friendly and experienced team understands what its like to be a

carer and can help with unravelling the complexities surrounding the benefits maze, the emotional impact of becoming a carer and can direct

carers towards relevant services, thus helping to minimise the stress being a carer can impose. We recognise that each individuals caring

role is unique and we offer support that is tailored to your needs as a carer.

Some carers need intense periods of help to overcome crises or major changes in their lives, some call on us occasionally when the need

arises. Some come to us with queries about services and financial matters, while others just need someone to talk to. Some carers wel-

come the opportunity to socialise with other carers and enjoy attending the activities we arrange whilst feedback from other carers is that just

receiving our regular mailing and newsletter provides a vital link to the outside world. If you are a carer, whatever your caring role entails,

Carers Outreach has something to offer you.

For more information telephone: Carers Outreach on 01492 533714 or 01248 370797 or call in to our weekly drop in at the Colwyn Bay

carers centre, The Metropole Basement Offices, Penrhyn Road, Colwyn Bay every Tuesday morning from 10 2 (except 28 December).

Its Definitely Chilblain Weather How do we recognise them? Chilblains are dusky red tender patches on the feet, typically on the tips of the toes but can be on the sole. They can also occur on hands and ears! They normally occur in colder weather.

What Causes Chilblains? Chilblains are caused by an over-reaction to the tiny blood vessels of the feet to changes in temperature, which leads to the skin of the toes becoming irritated, red and tender.

What can be done to help? Use chilblain cream twice daily on unbroken chilblains e.g. Balmosa or Gehwol Red Cream. If your chilblains have broken i.e. become raw and weeping; apply a sterile dressing e.g.. Melolin daily. You may need to seek further advice from Helen if you do not feel any better after 2-3 days.

Can I prevent Chilblains? Some people do seem to be prone to chilblains though we do not fully understand why, but there are several things that will help minimise the problem. Dress appropriately for the weath-er. Dont go without socks or tights in cooler weather. Dress warmly even when indoors. Keep yourself generally warm but avoid direct heat. Dont toast your feet in front of the fire or rest your feet on a hot water bottle - have a nice bath to warm up instead and have the central heating on.
