WHEN IT ALL BEGAN?
“Remember outsourcing? Sending jobs to India and China is so 2003. The new pool of cheap labor: everyday people using their spare cycles to create content, solve problems, even do corporate R & D”
Jeff Howe, The Rise of Crowdsourcing, Wired, June 2006.

THE HISTORY OF CROWDSOURCING• Outsourcing a task to the public in the form of
an open call is a typical strategy of wise rulers. • We find it in thousands of year old fairytales.
• It is also a community based principle.• Building a log cabin (Finland: talkoot).• Harvesting (Norway: dugnad). • Construction (US Mid-West: barnraise)
• In modern times, it reappeared with open source software programming (1970s).

THE HISTORY OF CROWDSOURCING
• Famously, the 1714 Longitude Prize
• Problem: to navigate safely at sea.
• Won by clockmaker John Harrison.• Accurate marine chronometer.

crowdsourcing challenge. Trends in Crowdsourcing Expertise, Babson College, 12 June 2014
FROM “CROWD” to “EXPERTS” to “SOCIAL”
• “Crowd”—poor term—implies “mob behavior”.• Today’s speakers• Peter Gloor, MIT, on “swarms”.• Kevin Redmond & Mike Hollywood on the
impact on the field of marketing.

MY VIEW
"Crowdsourcing is currently moving up the value chain and is no longer only for fringe freelance work.“
Trond Undheim, Founder, Yegii, Inc.

CROWDSOURCING TODAY
• Multifaceted phenomenon—still evolving. • Not yet established, but viewed as innovative. • Few corporates have used it extensively.• Few people have participated.
• Motivation is largely misunderstood. • Status (Weber)?• Money (Marx)?• Community feeling (Durkheim)?• All of the above?
• Embraced by Millennials. Trends in Crowdsourcing Expertise, Babson College, 12 June 2014
