President’s speech Cartagena de las Indias 20.7.2012

“Go where no pathway is and leave a trace.” Saint Augustine.

The current term is coming to an end and this is my last speech as a president. It has been a challenging experience for me to lead this organisation at a time

of conflict and global despair. But, over these last three years, cooperation and compassion did emerge as key competences, capable of transforming IAGP. For the first time in more than a decade our membership and services are growing. I want to wholeheartedly thank all my colleagues here on this board and our membership who have enabled us, with their trust and

contributions, to create a promising view of the future.Cartagena has welcomed us during these days. At

every professional and human level it offers a unique arena for our encounter. Social transformation has been the main focus reflecting a basic need in the world of today. Groups not only promote change. They also act as agents of change. So it seems more than justified to me that our agenda has emphasized this time educational and community-based group work as one of our essential competences. Cartagena has also realised the idea that our congresses could become a part of a real change project in regions of development. In the end more than 250 colleagues from Colombia are attending this congress while there was rather no attachment to our field when we started the project three and a half years ago: this makes me feel hopeful because it shows that our competence is really needed and that we are able to change. Thanks to the incredible efforts of the Scientific Program Committee (SPC) under the leadership of Maite Pi (Spain) and Marlene Marra (Brazil) and the platform of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), including five universities and Relates, a major association of family therapy, we have managed to link our practice with the enthusiastic reception, the Caribbean charm and warmth of the people and the always lively interest of our hosts to realise this intention. We have to thank very, very much María Cecilia Orozco and her great country!

IAGP’s engagement in our field during the last three years has culminated in various projects and initiatives. We started three training programmes in Egypt, Palestine/West Bank and India with competent local partners, while other regions have already applied to become educational partners in the future. We have endorsed and continue to support a research project of six Italian universities on the social impact of the Mafia. With the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA), Group Analytic Society (GAS) and other affiliates we have started a process to elaborate an international standard for certification in our field. We have established the terms for close cooperation with the UN in relation to genocide prevention

Dear Colleagues,

My main activity, on top of my work as member of the Executive, was to finalize the choice of the next venue for our International Congress in the summer of 2015.

I’m glad and enthusiastic about informing you that it will be in Rovinj, Croatia. Rovinj is a beautiful small city along the coast of the Peninsula of Istria, north of the country, and facing Venice.

The technical support will be given by a young team, experienced and keen to make the Congress a success.

I would like to thank my colleagues from the Site Selection Committee, and especially Ivan Urlic, our IAGP Secretary, an efficient go-between and future Chair of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

Indeed, after Cartagena, we are going back to Europe in Croatia, one of the gates to Eastern Europe, and the last country to join the European Union.

Informe del Presidente Electo

Queridos colegas,

Mi principal actividad, considerando mi trabajo como miembro de la Ejecutiva, fue finalizar la elección de la próxima sede de nuestro Congreso Internacional del verano de 2015.

Me siento entusiasmado al comunicaros que será en Rovinj, Croacia. Rovinj es una ciudad pequeña, preciosa, situada en la costa de la península de Istria, en el norte del país, frente a Venecia.

El soporte técnico lo proveerá un equipo joven, experimentado e ilusionado con hacer del congreso un éxito.

Me gustaría agradecer a mis compañeros del Comité de Selección de Sede, y especialmente a Ivan Urlic, Secretario de la IAGP, eficiente intermediario y futuro presidente del Comité organizador local (LOC).

Ciertamente, después de Cartagena, vamos a volver a Europa en Croacia, una de las puertas de La Europa del Este, y el último país en adherirse a la Unión Europea.

When you read this article you will be in Colombia, celebrating our IAGP XVIII International Congress. Three years ago in Rome we began to distribute information about it. Proexport had a table that encouraged us to go to Colombia with the slogan “The Only Risk is Wanting to Stay.” Since that time we started working on the project, always thinking of people who would attend, with the intention of facilitating the process of preparation, registration, presentation of work ... like your stay in Colombia. We have also prepared with love the following social events:

As we put together this issue the tri-annual IAGP Congress has been held in Cartagena, Columbia, July, 2012. A new IAGP Board has been elected and installed. Most of the reports in this issue were submitted in April. We regret we were unable to have this issue ready for you at the Congress in Cartagena.

We say farewell to President Jorge Burmeister and his team. The new Board consists of some who have remained and new members who have been elected to replace ones now gone. We plan to ask for Reflections from those Board members who have gone. Their wisdom, experience and consideration of the issues facing IAGP may be passed on to the new generation of Board members as nourishment for new growth.

In this issue, the President, President-Elect, Section and Committee Chairs reflect on the achievements of their term in office. See Giovanna Cantarella’s report on the Group Analysis Section and Maurizio Gasseau’s on the Psychodrama Section. See Committee reports from Bill Roller: Ethics and Professional Issues and Nominating, Sue Daniel and Catherine Mela: Education, Marianne Wiktorin: Finance, and Dena Baumgartner and Cristina Martinez-Taboada: Membership and Public Visibility.

News from Affiliates comes in the form of reports on their recent conferences, one in Japan and one in Portugal. Bill Roller has noted in a previous issue that other bodies are taking note of the ethical standards developed by IAGP for group psychotherapy, ratified in 2009; currently, ethical guidelines for group consultants have been put forward for ratification in 2012. Jorge Burmeister describes moves to establish an International Certificate for Group Training. Bill Roller’s and Jorge Burmeister’s reports highlight IAGP’s efforts to promote groupwork standards internationally. The Education Commitee proudly describes projects in Egypt, India and Ramallah, Palestine. You will see a book review on Sociodrama in a Changing World. Desde el escritorio de las EditorasMientras estamos compilando este número el

Congreso trianual de la IAGP se ha celebrado en Cartagena, Colombia, Julio de 2012. Una nueva Junta Directiva de la IAGP ha sido elegida y se ha formado. La mayoría de informes de este número se enviaron en Abril. Sentimos no haber podido tenerlo a punto para el Congreso en Cartagena.

Nos despedimos del Presidente President Jorge Burmeister y su equipo. La nueva Junta está compuesta por algunos que continúan y nuevos miembros que han sido elegidos para reemplazar a los que se han ido. Estamos pensando en pedir Reflexiones a los miembros de la Junta que la han dejado. Su sabiduría, experiencia y consideración de los temas relacionados con la IAGP deberían pasar a

la nueva generación de miembros de la Junta para nutrirlos en su crecimiento.

En este número, el Presidente, el Presidente Electo, los Coordinadores de las Secciones y Comités refexionan sobre lo que se ha conseguido en este período. More members of the Group Analysis Section have been presenting their research at international congresses. This has been a continuing project of the Group Analysis Section.

1) In collaboration with the Scientifiic Program Committee of the 18th IAGP International Congress, Cartagena, Colombia, July 2012 the Group Analysis Section has focused on the exploration of clinical, theoretical and experiential bases of:

a.Group Analysis and Research on Gender and Social Issues.

b.Group Analysis and Psychosomatic Health.c.Group Analysis and Neurosciences.d.Group Analysis and Brain Plasticity.2) At the EFPP Athens Conference May 24th

– 27th, 2012, Conflict and Reconciliation in Groups, Couples, Family and Society, Catherina Mela (Greece), the Group Analysis Section list-moderator, gave a presentation on Social Brain as an Expression of Brain Plasticity in Group Analysis at the Round Table on Research, chaired by Edith Lecourt. This

presentation follows the ongoing dialogue between groupanalysis and neuroscience started at the American Group Psychotherapy Association Conference in New York, February, 2011, and continued at the 4th Regional Mediterranean and Atlantic Congress of IAGP, in Oporto, September, 2011.

As far as the GA section list is concerned, there is

one new member and one cancelled member.

Issues needing clarification:The executive has replied to an issue raised by this

section. The issue related to the necessity for IAGP Board guidelines on how IAGP Sections create an IAGP activity. The Sections needed guidance on how

to link with their affiliates, either on behalf of the IAGP Section itself, or on behalf of IAGP as a whole. Board guidelines provide boundaries for Sections’ activities in possible cooperation with other IAGP Sections or Affiliate organizations. These cooperative activities could provide IAGP with further scientific connections and visibility.

The IAGP Psychodrama Section has been active in the last two years. Its Online Discussion list has increased to 561 members. An IAGP Worldwide Psychodrama Discussion List has been created, which is also open to non-IAGP members, to give space to thoughts, ideas, projects and interaction about Psychodrama and to recruit new members for the section and for IAGP.

There is a Psychodrama Section Coordinating Committee with 15 members: Manuela Maciel (Portugal), Sue Daniel (Australia), Judith Teszary (Sweden), Michael Wieser (Austria), Mario Buchbinder (Argentina), Peter Felix Kellermann (Israel), Jacob Gershoni (USA), Adelsa Cunha (Brazil), Yaacov Naor (Israel), Jeanne Burger (USA), Leandra Perrotta (Italy), Marlene Marra (Brazil), Renè Marineau (Canada), Shu Gong (USA) and Gabriela Moita (Portugal). This Committee usually meets in proximity to the IAGP Board meeting and IAGP Psychodrama Section Board Members may attend the meeting.

The Psychodrama Section Coordinating Committee appreciates the initiative expressed during Board meetings by President Jorge Burmeister and President Elect David Gutmann “to make the Sections even stronger.” I feel motivated to work towards developing an IAGP Regional Congress in 2014.

In Porto during a Psychodrama Section meeting with more than 50 participants, we discussed ways to establish a network composed of individual members and representatives of Psychodrama Affiliate Organizations. The aim was to create common research projects, to develop professional

development standards for conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and psychodrama with children. A committee with the following members: Heloisa Fleury (Brazil), Maurizio Gasseau (Italy), Jacob Gershoni, Manuela Maciel, Rene Marineau and Yaacov Naor was established. Its aim is to prepare an encounter of the

IAGP Psychodrama Section network to take place in Cartagena, Colombia on Sunday July 22nd 2012. This encounter will also help to prepare an IAGP Regional Congress in 2014, improving the network and trying to include all psychodramatists worldwide.

The IAGP Psychodrama Section supports the 18th International IAGP Congress in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia 2012 and will organize a Symposium Future Development of Psychodrama in the World for this event. Many IAGP Psychodrama Section members are also working in the organization of the 4th Sociodrama Conference to be held in Italy in September 2013 and its Scientific Committee has asked the IAGP Board and Executive to support this Conference.

The Ethics Committee has endeavored the past two and a half years to develop and refine the Ethical Guidelines and Professional Standards for Organization Development and Group Process Consultants. These Guidelines have been carefully crafted as a starting point for considering in depth the ethical dilemmas which arise for organization and group process consultants as they work in both national and international contexts. They are intended to guide consultants in a high level of ethical practice and to support professional conduct.

These Ethical Guidelines were accepted unanimously by the Board of Directors in Paris in January, 2012. Current IAGP members will have the opportunity to ratify these Ethical Guidelines at the time of the 2012 General Election of Directors and Officers.

The following members of the Ethics Committee have been instrumental in the formulation and refinement of these Guidelines: Lauren Storck (USA), Raymond Battegay (Switzerland), Lilian Klein-Bicas (Mexico), Ursula Hauser (Costa Rica), and Michael Gutmann (France).

I want to thank these individuals for their dedication to the task.

I shall be retiring from the Board of Directors following the Congress in Cartagena, Colombia. This means I shall end my tenure as Chair of the Ethics Committee, since the Chair must be a member of the Board in his or her second or third term of membership. The new president will appoint a new

Chair.We have accomplished a

great deal as a Committee over the past 6 years.

1) We established ourselves as a Standing Committee within the IAGP governance, adding a new amendment to our By-Laws following ratification by the General membership in 2009.

2) We wrote the document Ethical

Guidelines and Professional Standards for Group Psychotherapy, which was subsequently accepted and ratified by the General membership in 2009 and is the standard for behavior for our therapeutic community.

3) We have completed the aforementioned document which seeks to become the standard for behavior for our organization consulting community.

The topic of Ethics is often slighted in favor of more “pressing” issues, like membership and dues. But ethical issues never go away -- and they are often embedded in the many other decisions we make as an organization. I believe it is the on-going task of the Ethics Committee to remind our organization of that fact.

For all of you who have contributed to the accomplishment of these tasks, please accept my

deepest appreciation and respect.

El Comité de Ética se ha esforzado por los últimos dos años y medio por desarrollar y perfeccionar las Pautas Éticas y Estándares Profesionales para los Consultores de Desarrollo Organizacional y Procesos de Grupo. Dichas Pautas han sido cuidadosamente redactadas como punto de partida para considerar a fondo los dilemas éticos que enfrentan los consultores de organizaciones y procesos de grupo, mientras trabajan en contextos tanto nacionales como internacionales.

Las pautas tienen como objetivo guiar a los consultores con un alto nivel de práctica ética y respaldar la conducta profesional.

Dichas Pautas Éticas fueron aprobadas unánimamente por la Mesa Directiva en París en enero del 2012. Miembros actuales de IAGP tendrán la oportunidad de ratificar estas pautas al votar en la elección general de Directores y Oficiales en el 2012.

Membership and Public Visibility CommitteeDear colleagues

As Co-Chairs of the Membership and Public Visibility Committee and new Board members 2009-12. We, Dena Baumgartner (USA) and Cristina Martinez-Taboada (Spain), would like to share some of our goals and concerns during our term as Co-Chairs. Above all we feel lucky to have had the pleasure of sharing experiences and decisions as a team and as members of an active Board, full of valuable people.

As Membership Co-Chairs we have worked with the following goals:

1) Taking Care of Membership: Membership preservation and renewal has been central for us. We try to share with members the understanding of how important each one of you is to IAGP. We need your support, your thoughts and considerations to improve IAGP and to let others know of the many benefits it can provide.

2) Promoting IAGP Visibility: We attended Conferences and Congresses from Rome (Italy) to Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) passing through New York (USA), San Diego (USA), Porto (Portugal), Aguas de Lindoia (Brazil) and Paris (France). We have learned the importance of local associations, which promote social and professional group interactions and strengthen community settings therapeutically as well as the relevance of the Summer School in Granada. Now we are approaching a new challenge with the Congress in 2015 in Croatia entering a different culture and with a new IAGP Board of

Directors. Please don’t miss it!There have been activities, feelings and projects.

We have learned a lot about cooperation and constructive competition, solidarity and dealing productively with cultural diversity. Now we know that IAGP is an association full of life facing the future with a global outlook.

3) Strengthening and clarifying the tasks of the Chair: This has been another one of our goals. The mission of Membership and Public Visibility Chair has many functions and duties. We feel to do it efficiently it is necessary to have interaction with the technical interface between the Board and IAGP members. It is rewarding and hard work. Developing a team with a cross-cultural outlook has been an opportunity to learn a lot and enjoy the exchange. This is part of the IAGP spirit.

We want to thank Maria Cecilia Orozco and her team for their wonderful job in organizing the 18th IAGP International Congress 2012 in Cartagena de Indias. We also want to thank our past president Jorge Burmeister and his team for their dedication, their vision, their commitment and availability for discussions on issues. We know discussions were not always easy. We express our gratitude to Heloisa Fleury for her enthusiasm, help and good management of resources. We express our thanks also to Ivan Urlic our past Board Secretary and Chair of our next International Congress in Croatia. To all Board members who supported us at membership tables all over the world and gave us ideas to help us in getting members, we thank you. We look forward to working with our new president David Gutmann and the new elected Board members.

As a last message, just saying again: please renew if you have not and encourage your colleagues to renew or join. The three projects of the Eduction Committee are the Egypt Project, the India Project and the Ramallah, Palestine Project.

1. The Egypt Project by Ivan Urlic and Catherina Mela The IAGP Education Committee’s Egypt Project

is chaired by Catherina Mela (Greece), Giovanna Cantarella (Italy), and Jorge Burmeister (Spain). The initial visit of IAGP was conducted by President Jorge Burmeister, November, 2011, inaugurating the Egypt Project and giving introductory courses on psychodrama, group analysis, group psychotherapy with adolescents, and supervision. Representatives from the leading universities in Egypt and neigbour states attended the lectures. Thanks to the efforts and the hospitality of our hosts, the Egyptian Association of Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes (EAGT), and their President, Mona Rakhawy Professor of Psychiatry, Al-Cairo University, the workshop was a rich and mutually inspiring encounter between professionals from the Orient and Occident.

Dr Ivan Urlic (Croatia) visited Cairo, 23rd-25th March, 2012. He offered a wide spectrum of topics from which the participants could choose. His emphasis was on systematic overview of basic concepts and understanding of group phenomena, from everyday life to “difficult” patients.

There were between 50 and 70 participants, mostly psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.

The presentations, explanations, clinical examples, and questions, were translated into both English and Arabic. Dr Urlic’s lecture topics included; 1) Introduction to group psychotherapy, 2) Principal theories of personality: psychosocial development of personality, the theory of M.Mahler, and W.Bion’s basic assumptions, 3) About group psychotherapy, 4) Organizing the group, 5) Group matrix and 6) Therapeutic factors in group psychotherapy. In addition, Dr Urlic conducted an experiential median-size group.

The curiosity and motivation of our Egyptian colleagues to learn was impressive. The exchange of knowledge and experience was stimulating for

participants as well as for Dr Urlic. The participants were remarkable in their openness and courage in self-disclosure.

From arrival to departure, Dr Urlic appreciated the warm hospitality and kindness shown to him. He is grateful to Mona Rakhawy, President of EAGT, and Muhamed Taha, Secretary, who, together with other colleagues, efficiently adjusted the programme to the dynamics of the workshop. As the list of offered topics exceeded the time available, upon suggestion of the organizers, Dr Urlic chose lectures that seemed the most appropriate in response to the emerging group dynamics.

The next visit to Cairo will take place 1st-3rd June, 2012. Catherina Mela will conduct the seminar and workshop, focussing on the themes of 1) Small, median and large group-analytic groups, 2) The group-analytic matrix and its analogues with brain plasticity function.

The work of the Nominating Committee has been unusually difficult for this election cycle. Due in part to the current global recession, many highly qualified potential candidates for Office and Board of Directors were not able to make the commitment of time and money that is required of those who choose to serve in the governance of IAGP, and so declined to accept nomination. This is an economic reality we must face as a small international organization whose Board members pay their own expenses and are not remunerated for their time of service.

Nevertheless, we are proud to have assembled an excellent list of candidates for Office and openings on the Board Directors whose names appeared on the Ballot for the 2012 General Election. We trust that they shall be among those who care for our international organization and uphold our values into the next decade of the 21st century.

The Nominating Committee makes the following recommendations for the 2015 Election Cycle:

1. Given the difficulties our Committee experienced during this Nominating cycle, our Committee recommends that the Board of Directors resolve to make a change in meeting protocol that will allow one of our two annual Board meetings to take place on the internet, using that sophisticated technology that is now available to us. Such a change will reduce expenditures by Board members, encouraging and making possible the participation of many more excellent members of IAGP in the governance of the organization.

2. As the expense of sending and retrieving ballots by postal mail for our 2012 General Election will probably exceed $ 3,500.00, the Nominating Committee has come to the conclusion that our organization can accomplish this task cheaper and more efficiently on-line. Many organizations similar to us conduct their elections in this fashion. We recommend the Board of Directors adopt electronic voting for the next triennial General Election in 2015.

3. The work of future Nominating Committees will be facilitated if IAGP members a) make sure the

persons they nominate are fully paid members of IAGP for the 3 year membership cycle leading up to the Election and

b) make sure the Nominating Committee has an up to date email address for each nominee. In addition, IAGP members c) should make the nominations early in the nomination period and not wait until the absolute

deadline for nominees.I want to sincerely thank the members of my

Nominating Committee for their extraordinary effort and dedication in the completion of our task.

El trabajo del Comité de Nominaciones ha sido particularmente difícil durante este ciclo de elecciones. 1. I attended Columbia University in New York City for my Social Work degree. The curriculum focused on a dynamic understanding of the whole person through the template of diverse psychodynamic theories: which included the individual in relation to self, family and society. The basic underpinnings of these studies were through an orthodox or Freudian lens.

In my first casework class we were given a case study of medical social work in a hospital setting. The patient, in this case, was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. The patient was exceedingly anxious, attributing much of the anxiety to the day of the treatment. The surgeon thought this was nonsense and superstitious. In taking a thorough history the Social Worker learned that in this patent’s culture and religion it was bad luck to have procedures of any kind performed on Tuesdays, and this “superstition” was her reality. She conveyed this to the surgeon helping him to understand that the patient’s belief system affected her sense of safety. This emotional state was an important part of her surgery and recovery. The surgeon listened and the operation was postponed to a more neutral day and was successful.

In 2009 I was elected to the IAGP Board. In my statement to serve on the Board of IAGP I advocated for an international community outreach program. I was honored when I was asked to chair the newly formed Disaster/Trauma Task Force (D/T TF). The first question was how do we proceed? And our first task what could we realistically do? There were numerous natural disasters occurring: the earthquakes in Haiti and Brazil; a tragedy in Bangladesh and the earthquake/tsunami/ nuclear fallout in Japan. As we reached out to colleagues in these areas and heeded their responses, the lessons of my early social work training came to mind. Our first response was to let our colleagues know that the D/T TF exists, that we have resource materials and consultation available. And we wait with patience to be asked for assistance as we periodically check in.

March 11, 2012 was the first year anniversary of the Earthquake/Tsunami in the Tohoku region of Japan. During this year, I as well as a number of IAGP members, have been in continuous contact with Hidefumi Kotani, a former IAGP Board member, who lives in Tokyo. The sensitivity to cultural differences, East and West, was essential for any intimate connection to be forged. It was very important to understand the Japanese responses to natural disasters, which historically have been many: earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions. The response often is “shikata ga nai – nothing can be done about it.” and one needs to exercise gaman(1), endurance, which is facing disaster and pain with dignity, without losing control and asking for help. People stay in their communities, remain steadfast, though there may be fear and hopelessness, and believe everything will be as before. Clearly gaman can be a slippery slope.

When the disaster struck Japan our immediate impulse was to want to ask “how can we help with action” but we quickly understood that we needed to “hold back” and just repeat our messages that we are here. Ironically, we came to understand this was a similar (parallel) process that Dr. Kotani and his team were experiencing. They began to organize their outreach work in Tokyo and Sendai (Tohoku region) the week after the disasters. Each experience with the victims and helpers

reinforced the necessity of cultural attunement, the importance to provide “safe space”, and patiently develop trust. The result was modifications of their approach, but not their goal. For example, in training of professionals the psychotherapeutic approach of diagnosing and treating PTSD was replaced with psycho-educational workshops.

Dr. Kotani and his team are psychologically trained and oriented and are from the big city, Tokyo. The disasters occurred in East Japan, in the country where there is a more traditional, historical or colloquial understanding and response to trauma work. This resulted in a disconnect between the 2 groups. The team’s initial offers of help were met with hesitation and resistance. The team persevered and continued to make contact with school personnel, psychologists, and parents, modifying their approach to be sensitive to the population. In September 2011 the East Japanese Center for Free Clinical Educational Services was established offering clinical services and workshops. There was/is much outreach to the professionals who are working with victims and survivors. These helpers are exhausted but do not rest or ask for help themselves (gaman). And as a result they did not recognize the stress and toll that they are experiencing.

In his account of the events of his experiences: My Experience in East Japan: Disaster and Safe Space for People, Dr. Kotani’s report adds this subtitle –“There are so many things we can do. But actually we can do little.”(2) In a recent communication. (March 2012) he writes “----it was quite a needed intervention to break through the current slow move of reviving. Especially in the Eastern North Japan, the culture of attitude of acceptance and fate to disasters and pressure from superior powers is stronger than in other areas in Japan, because of their history. These characteristic attitudes are too much emphasized and depended on. It is symbolized by the watch word ‘Ganbaro Tohoku (hang on Tohoku)’ …. Anyway we are walking.”(3)

In March the International Association for Developmental Psychology (IADP) held a pre-congress in Sendai. The topic was trauma and the hope was to dispel the inaccurate understanding of group treatment especially as an effective modality (small and large groups) for the treatment of trauma. IAGP’s Bonnie Buchele was the plenary speaker. The pre-congress was very successful and the support of IAGP was noted. Afterwards Dr, Kotani wrote:

“I believe our partnership was really something else and so impressive for them as a fact that such a international co-work through IAGP was actualized.”

Grupo de Trabajo Desastre/Trauma Asistí a la Universidad de Columbia en Nueva York para

mi grado de Trabajo Social. El curriculum se focalizaba en una comprensión dinámica global de la persona a través del modelo de diversas teorías psicodinámicas: que incluían al individuo en relación al sí mismo, la família y la sociedad. Los fundamentos básicos de estos estudios se basaban en la visión ortodoxa de Freud.

En mi primera clase de estudio de caso se nos dio un estudio de caso de trabajo social médico en un espacio hospitalario. La paciente, en este caso, tenía programada una intervención quirúrgica para el martes. La paciente estaba extremadamente ansiosa, atribuyendo la mayor parte de su ansiedad al día de la intervención. El cirujano pensaba que esto no tenía sentido y era superstición. Elaborando la historia de forma cuidadosa la Trabajadora Social se enteró de que en la cultura y religión de la paciente era de mala suerte realizar intervenciones de cualquier tipo en martes, y esta “superstición” era su realidad. Ella transmitió esto al cirujano ayudándole a entender que en el sistema de creencias de la paciente afectaba a su sentimiento de seguridad. Este estado emocional era un componente importante de su cirugía y recuperación. El cirujano escuchó y la operación fue pospuesta a un día más neutro y se desarrolló con éxito.

The Finance Committee (FC) consists of the Chair Marianne Wiktorin (Sweden), Dr Bonnie Buchele (USA), Board Member, Dr Eric Jackman (Canada), former Chair of the Finance Committee and Dr Walter Stone (USA), former Treasurer and former Chair of the Finance Committee.

The Finance Committee (FC) assists the IAGP concerning financial issues, and following up the budget. The FC works closely with the Treasurer and the President. We assist the IAGP in establishing clear and transparent policies concerning Life Membership, the Deep Reserve, Investments and Travel Reimbursements. These policies have been decided by the Board and are now being revised for the Policies and Procedures Manual.

This last year, we worked with matters concerning incorporation and change of bank. IAGP is incorporated in Switzerland. There need to be two Swiss members assigned to represent IAGP in matters of incorporation. The IAGP will bank again in Switzerland. The FC together with the Treasurer and the President have found that this is the best solution. Being incorporated in Switzerland, there are advantages to banking in the same country.

The budget portrays the goals of the organization and the priorities for the current term, and is visible in the way resources are allocated. The FC’s continuous follow-up of the budget helps guarantee that IAGP handles income and expenditure in accordance with its goals.

The finances of IAGP are sound. There is a substantial increase in income from membership, which is satisfying. Officers, Board Members and

others have done a fine job in promoting IAGP. Membership retention and recruitment have increased. Membership income from affiliated organisations is above the budgeted amount.

During the spring of 2012, when the IAGP funds have been moved back to the United Bank of Switzerland in Switzerland, the FC will revise the investments of IAGP.

presidenta Marianne Wiktorin (Suecia), la Dra. Bonnie Buchele (USA), miembro de la directiva, el Dr. Eric Jackman (Canadá), antiguo presidente del comité de finanzas, y el Dr. Walter Stone (USA), antiguo tesorero y antiguo presidente del comité de finanzas.

El comité de finanzas (FC) asiste a la IAGP en lo concerniente a temas financieros y seguimiento del presupuesto. El FC trabaja íntimamente con el tesorero y el presidente. Asesoramos a la IAGP en el establecimiento de una política clara y transparente relativa a la membresía vitalicia, fondos de reserva, inversiones y reembolsos de viajes. Dicha política

se ha decidido en la ejecutiva y en la actualidad está siendo revisada para el Manual de política y procedimientos.

El año pasado trabajamos en temas relativos a la incorporación y cambio de banco. La IAGP se ha incorporado a Suiza. Es necesario que haya dos miembros suizos asignados a representar a la IAGP en lo relativo a la incorporación. La IAGP de nuevo tendrá un banco en Suiza. El FC junto con el tesorero y el presidente han encontrado que ésta era la mejor solución. Incorporarse a Suiza proporciona ventajas para tener cuenta allí.

El presupuesto refleja los objetivos de la organización y las prioridades para el periodo actual, y es visible en el modo en el que se asignan los recursos. El continuo seguimiento del presupuesto que el FC realiza ayuda a garantizar que la IAGP maneja ingresos y gastos de manera acorde a sus metas.

Las finanzas de la IAGP son fijas. Hay un incremento sustancial de los ingresos provenientes de las cuotas de los miembros, muy satisfactoria. Los miembros de la ejecutiva y la directiva han realizado un buen trabajo promoviendo la IAGP. La captación y permanencia de miembros se ha incrementado. Los ingresos provenientes de las organizaciones afiliadas están por encima de la cantidad presupuestada.

En la primavera de 2012, cuando se trasladen los fondos de la IAGP al United Bank of Switzerland en Suiza, el FC revisará las inversiones de la IAGP.

Haciendo progresos

Estimados colegas:Como responsables del Comité de Membrecía

y Visibilidad pública en estos dos primeros años en la Junta Directiva (2009-12). Nosotras, Dena Baumgartner (EE.UU.) y Cristina Martínez-Taboada (España) deseamos expresar que nos sentimos afortunadas por haber tenido el placer de compartir experiencias y decisiones como equipo y como miembros de una Junta Directiva activa y llena de gente valiosa. Así mismo, deseamos compartir algunas de nuestras metas, preocupaciones y objetivos durante este tiempo esperando sea inspirador a los sucesores y que pasamos a detallar:

1) Cuidar a los miembros de la IAGP: Preservar la membresía y animar a la renovación ha sido fundamental. Intentamos transmitir la importancia que cada uno de ustedes tiene para la IAGP. Necesitamos su apoyo, sus pensamientos y consideraciones para mejorar la IAGP y hacer saber a otros los muchos beneficios que puede proporcionar su pertenencia.

2) Promover la visibilidad de la IAGP: Asistimos a Conferencias y Congresos desde Roma (Italia) a Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), pasando por Nueva York (EE.UU.), San Diego (EE.UU.), Oporto (Portugal), Aguas de Lindoia (Brasil) y París (Francia). Hemos aprendido la importancia de las asociaciones locales, que promueven la interacción de grupos sociales y profesionales, y refuerzan la configuración de la comunidad terapéutica así como la relevancia de la Escuela de Verano de Granada Ahora se aproxima un desafío nuevo con el Congreso en el 2015 en Croacia con una cultura diferente y una nueva Junta Directiva de la IAGP. Por favor, no se lo pierdan. Ha habido emociones, actividades, y proyectos. Hemos aprendido mucho acerca de la cooperación y la competencia constructiva, la solidaridad y el hacer frente de manera productiva a la diversidad cultural. Ahora sabemos que la IAGP es una asociación llena de vida con una perspectiva global hacia el futuro.

3) Fortalecer y clarificar las tareas del Comité: Este ha sido otro de nuestros objetivos. La misión de la Membrecía tiene muchas funciones y deberes. Creemos que para hacerlo de manera eficiente es necesario tener interacción con la parte más técnica entre la Junta y los miembros de la IAGP. Es un trabajo gratificante y arduo. Desarrollar un equipo con una perspectiva intercultural ha sido una oportunidad para aprender mucho y disfrutar del intercambio. Esto es parte del espíritu de la IAGP.

Queremos dar las gracias a Maria Cecilia Orozco y su equipo por su excelente trabajo en la organización del 18 ª Congreso Internacional de la IAGP 2012 en Cartagena de Indias. También queremos agradecer a nuestro ya expresidente ejecutivo Jorge Burmeister y su equipo por su dedicación, su visión, su compromiso y disponibilidad para los debates sobre cualquier tema de interés. Sabemos que la dialéctica no siempre fue facil. Expresamos nuestro agradecimiento a Heloisa Fleury por su entusiasmo, la ayuda y la buena gestión de los recursos. Me retiraré de la Mesa Directiva después del Congreso en Cartagena, Colombia. Esto significa que terminaré mi ejercicio como presidente del Comité de Ética, puesto que el presidente debe ser miembro de la Mesa Directiva durante su segundo o tercer ciclo de membrecía. El nuevo Presidente nombrará al nuevo presidente del Comité de Ética.

Como Comité hemos realizado una gran labor en los últimos seis años.

1. Nos establecimos como un Comité permanente dentro IAGP, creando una nueva enmienda a los Estatutos, la cual fue ratificada por los miembros en general en el 2009.

A menudo el tema de ética es menospreciado en comparación con otras cuestiones urgentes tales como las cuotas de membrecía. Pero las

cuestiones éticas nunca desaparecen -- y a menudo están vinculadas a las muchas otras decisiones que tomamos como una organización. Recordar este hecho es la tarea constante del Comité de Ética.

The Japan Association of Group Psychotherapy’s (JAGP) 29th Congress was held at Meiji University in Tokyo 9th -11th March. The main theme was “What is a group psychotherapist?” About 500 people took part.

We were fortunate to have two special guests accept our invitation, IAGP President Jorge Burmeister and President-Elect David Gutmann. We are very grateful to them for coming to Japan at this time, just one year after 11th March 2010 when we suffered an earthquake and tsunami.

We are left with a fantastic impression of the Conversation Hour between IAGP President Jorge Burmeister and JAGP President Dr. Nobuo Aida, which we called East meets West. They gave us much courage and love. Thank you!

GRUPO (JAGP) tuvo lugar en la Universidad Meiji en Tokio del 9 al 11 de Marzo. El tema principal fue ”Qué es un psicoterapeuta de grupo?” Tomaron parte alrededor de 500 personas.

Tuvimos la fortuna de contar con dos invitados especiales, el presidente de la IAGP Jorge Burmeister, y el presidente electo David Gutmann. Les estamos muy agradecidos por haber venido a Japón en este momento, justo un año después del terremoto y tsunami que sufrimos el 11 de marzo de 2011.

Nos quedamos con una fantástica impresión de la “Hora de conversación” entre el presidente de la IAGP jorge Burmeister y el presidente de la JAGP Dr. Nobuo Aida, a la que titulamos El este se encuentra con el oeste. Nos dieron coraje y amor. ¡Gracias!

The Portuguese Society of Group Psychoanalytical Psychodrama (SPPPG) has celebrated its 2nd International Congress in Lisbon 9th - 10th of March 2012.

The SPPPG invited the IAGP to participate in this Congress. Since our president was at another event, I assisted by representing IAGP at this event.

The topic was stimulating: Liberdade e submissão (Freedom and Submission) and the experience was enriching. I had the occasion to meet some IAGP colleagues and former Board members: António Roma Torres, Ernesto Fonseca Fàbregas and Manuela Maciel. Gabriela Moita,

the President of the Portuguese Society of Psychodrama, Chair of our last Regional Mediterranean and Atlantic Congress, Porto, September 2011, was there as well. There were participants from France, Spain, Mozambique, Israel, as well as many colleagues from Portugal.

Luísa Branco Vicente, President of the SPPPG and her team have given all their efforts and generosity in this encounter. We know the hospitality of the Portuguese people; we tasted it in the Porto Congress last year; again we have been filled up and nourished by the care given, on this occasion, by Luísa and her team. Their vitality was “sowed” in the gala dinner in which all of us danced a lot and the night appeared to be short.

It is said that we connect less with our neighbours; since I am Spanish I had the opportunity of connecting more with Portuguese colleagues. I contributed to the program by presenting a paper and a workshop about transgenerational transmission of trauma.

Our colleague Yaakov Naor coordinated a post-congress workshop: Freedom from the power of silence through psychodrama; a gratifying personal and professional experience.

enjoy all we have been preparing for you with all our devotion and affection over these past three years.

We want to thank the LOC, the SPC, our Congress consultants who always were ready to help us, and members of the Board of Directors, especially our President Jorge Burmeister, who were always there, available for what we needed, helping in preparing the conference. Without all this great team, the result would not have been possible.

During these days, people who are in Cartagena can share experiences, knowledge, greetings, hugs, training and recreational activities. This is the time of the meeting, previously heated by the See You Soon list. We hope that the result of work of these three years is in ripe and pleasant to the palate and mind.

Cuando leáis estas líneas estaremos en Colombia, celebrando nuestro XVIII Congreso Internacional IAGP. Hace tres años en Roma se empezó a distribuir información sobre el mismo. Proexport tenía una mesa en la que nos animaban a ir a Colombia y se podía leer el lema “El único peligro es querer quedarse”. Desde entonces empezamos a trabajar en el proyecto, siempre pensando en las personas que iban a asistir, con la intención de facilitarles tanto el proceso de preparación, inscripción, presentación de trabajos… como su estancia cuando llegaran a Colombia. During the last American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) Conference, March 2012, the second meeting of a working party took place to establish an International Certificate for Group Psychotherapy. I would like to make some comments on the meeting and the implications of this process; it concerns major interests of our organization and membership.

Lilian Klein-Bicas (Mexico) and myself represent IAGP on this working party. A subgroup of this working party has begun to collect relevant material on current training standards from all over the world. I would like to emphasize that this working party is promoting a dialogue which could bring advantages for all parties involved in this process. We have also tried to involve more organizations to participate in the next meeting in Cartagena, July 2012 in order to have a real international representation of our field.

In our meetings in London, August, and in New York, March, we have started to discuss two different goals of an International Certificates. Both goals share the idea of enhancing interest in training; this implies an increase in the number of trainees. This will help to develop our field.

1. Goal 1: Quality standards for group psychotherapy The basic idea here is a search for excellence in

training. This training would lead to a certificate of excellence. Such a certificate would specify hours and content of training to guarantee quality. A certifying body that assesses that quality would also be an essential component

2. Goal 2: A certificate to verify trainingThe key idea is to offer a document that officially

certifies the minimum training hours or various levels of training completed. It entitles the holder to exercise the competences accredited and makes the efforts invested in the training visible with a document that can be displayed.

Context and purposeUntil recently IAGP has made no effort to create

an International Certificate; the differences between standards of training in different countries and regions and between methods are enormous. These differences are due to different professional traditions and different regulation systems for mental health or other psychological services in each country. IAGP offers an inclusive approach. Being inclusive means taking into account the differences just cited about methods and the organizations representing them. Based on this policy such an International Certificate shall not replace regional or national certificates. But it could help to develop our field as a model of reference. Given also the many differences between methods and regions it might be useful to create not only one but several models of reference. Similarly, IAGP has made in the past no effort to create an International Certificate because IAGP did not provide any training programs. But as IAGP has recently

begun to facilitate proper training programs we clearly welcome the goal of establishing a standard in this regard.

GPA has renamed its National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists to be known as the International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists. This name change has not only caused a conflict but also a dialogue. AGPA accepted our concerns and the concerns of others, such as the Group Analytic Society (GAS), and in the end we have been able to establish together this working party on the topic of international certificates. In the spirit of our partnership and our willingness to cooperate, all of the organizations involved have contributed to this dialogue. In order to represent our affiliates in a fair and transparent way, IAGP invites affiliates to participate in further discussions and meetings in our CAOA list. Certificado Internacional para Psicoterapia de Grupo

Durante la anterior Conferencia de la Asociación Americana de Psicoterapia de Grupo (AGPA), Marzo 2012, tuvo lugar un segundo encuentro de un grupo de trabajo para establecer un Certificado Internacional para la Psicoterapia de Grupo. Me gustaría realizar algunos comentarios sobre el encuentro y las implicaciones en este proceso; toca muchos de los intereses de nuestra organización y membrecía.

Lilian Klein-Bicas (Méjico) y yo mismo representamos a la IAGP en este grupo. Un subgrupo de este grupo de trabajo ha empezado a reunir material relevante sobre los actuales estándares de formación de todo el mundo. Me gustaría enfatizar que este grupo promueve un diálogo que puede aportar ventajas para todas las partes implicadas en el proceso. Hemos intentado implicar a más organizaciones a participar en la reunión en Cartagena, Julio 2012 para tener una representación realmente internacional de nuestro campo.

En nuestros encuentros en Londres, agosto, y en Nueva York, marzo, hemos empezado a discutir la distinción entre dos objetivos de los certificados Internacionales. Ambas ideas aspiran a mejorar el interés en formarse; esto implica un incremento en el número de formandos. Esto ayudará a desarrollar nuestro campo.

1. Objetivo 1: Estándares de calidad para la psicoterapia de grupo

La idea básica aquí sería buscar la excelencia en la formación. Esta formación llevará a un certificado de excelencia. Este certificado especificará no solamente las horas y los contenidos de la formación para garantizar su calidad. Un componente esencial será la evaluación de la calidad por un organismo certificador. A largo plazo las regulaciones estatales

para este certificado permitirían practicar su profesión únicamente a terapeutas de grupo o consultores con licencia.

2. Objetivo 2: El certificado de verificación de la formación

La idea clave es ofrecer un documento que certifique oficilamente un mínimo de horas de formación o varios niveles de formación completados. Se faculta al titular para ejercer las competencias acreditadas y convierte en visible el esfuerzo invertido en la formación con un documento que puede presentarse.

Contexto y propósito Hasta hace poco la IAGP no se había implicado

en crear un Certificado Internacional; las diferencias entre estándares de formación en los diferentes paises y regiones y entre métodos son enormes. Estas diferencias se deben a las diferentes tradiciones profesionales y sistemas diferentes de regulación en los servicios de salud mental u otros servicios psicológicos en cada país. La IAGP ofrece un abordaje inclusivo. Ser inclusivo implica tener en cuenta las diferencias citadas sobre métodos y las organizaciones que los representan. Basándonos en esta política, un Certificado Internacional de este tipo no reemplazará los certificados nacionales o regionales. Pero puede ayudar a desarrollar nuestro campo como modelo de referencia. Además, dadas las diferencias entre métodos y regiones sería útil crear no sólo uno, sino diversos modelos de referencia. De forma similar la IAGP no se ha esforzado en el pasado en crear un Certificado Internacional debido a que la IAGP no ofrecía programas de formación. Pero debido a que la IAGP ha empezado recientemente a facilitar programas de formación, damos claramente la bienvenida al objetivo de establecer un estándar al respecto.

La AGPA ha renombrado su Registro Nacional de Psicoterapeutas de Grupo Certificados como Junta Internacional para la Certificación de Psicoterapeutas de Grupo. Este cambio de nombre no sólo ha causado conflictos, sino que también ha promovido el diálogo. La AGPA ha aceptado nuestras preocupaciones y las de otros, como la Group Analytic Society GAS, y al final hemos podido crear conjuntamente este grupo de trabajo sobre el tema de los certificados internacionales. Con espíritu de colaboración y voluntad de cooperar, todas las organizaciones implicadas han contribuido a este diálogo. Para representar a nuestras afiliadas de forma justa y transparente, la IAGP invita a las afiliadas a participar en las próximas discusiones y encuentros en nuestra lista de la CAOA. in Chennai. Talks have centred around ongoing workshops, accreditation and a regional development plan, which could include Kerala and Bangalore. This project is a milestone in providing groupwork training and a vehicle for learning about Indian culture. The initial visit by Sue is scheduled between 4th – 20th December 2012. There will be a five day psychodrama training workshop, a three day training event and several lectures in a variety of colleges and universities. Gregorio Armananzas Ros (Spain) will join the project and Sue will also invite others to contribute in 2013 and 2014.

3. The Ramallah Projectby Ursula Hauser The Ramallah, Palestine Project is chaired by

Ursula Hauser (Costa Rica), Sue Daniel (Australia) and Maurizio Gasseau (Italy). Ursula Hauser is the Coordinator and Trainer of the Project for the Training in Group Psychotherapy and Group Process Methods in Ramallah. Her project is being conducted with colleagues in collaboration with the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center For Victims of Torture (TRC) in Ramallah, Palestine. The TRC submitted a request to IAGP on August 3rd 2011 for a training program incorporating various group psychotherapy methods. It was approved as a project by the IAGP Board January, 2012.

Contributors to the proposal were Khader Rasras, Chief of the Training Department of the TRC, Mahmoud Sehwail, Director of the TRC, Maja Hess, President of MIS, IAGP Board members Jorge

Burmeister, Sue Daniel, Maurizio Gasseau and Catherina Mela.

The three year program will include a total of 360 hours of training:

1st year: Basic introduction with various group methods (Psychodrama, Group Analysis, Family Therapy, Trauma therapy models) for all participants of the Training Project.

2nd year: Subgroups with special election of a branch of group therapy method, 4 courses in the chosen method.

3rd year: Supervision of group work with the trainee’s chosen group method.

Standards of evaluation and assessment methods are yet to be developed.

Los tres proyectos del Comité de Docencia son el Proyecto de Egipto, el Proyecto de India y el Proyecto de Palestina en Ramallah.

1. El Proyecto de Egipto por Ivan Urlic y Catherina Mela El Proyecto de Egipto del Comité de Docencia de

la IAGP está coordinado por Catherina Mela (Grecia), Giovanna Cantarella (Italia), y Jorge Burmeister (España). La visita inicial de la IAGP fue conducida por el Presidente Jorge Burmeister, Noviembre, 2011, inaugurando el Proyecto de Egipto y dando cursos introductorios sobre psicodrama, grupoanálisis,

terapia de grupo con adolescentes, y supervisión. Representantes de las universidades líderes de Egipto y los estados vecinos asistieron a las conferencias. Gracias a los esfuerzos y la hospitalidad de nuestros anfitriones, la Asociación Egipcia de Psicoterapia de Grupo y Procesos Grupales (EAGT), y de su Presidenta, Mona Rakhawy Profesora de Psiquiatría, Universidad del Cairo, el taller fue un encuentro rico y de inspiración mutua entre los profesionales de Oriente y Occidente.

El Dr Ivan Urlic (Croacia) visitó El Cairo del 23 al 25 de Marzo, 2012. Ofreció un amplio espectro de temas entre los cuales los participantes pudieron elegir. Puso énfasis en la observación sistemática de conceptos básicos y comprensión de los fenómenos de grupo desde la vida cotidiana hasta los pacientes “difíciles”.

Había entre 50 y 70 participantes, la mayoría psiquiatras, psicólogos y trabajadores sociales. Las presentaciones, explicaciones, los ejemplos clínicos y las preguntas se traducían al inglés y al árabe. Los temas de la clase del Dr Urlic incluían: 1) Introducción a la psicoterapia de grupo, 2) Principales teorías de la personalidad: Desarrollo psicosocial de la personalidad, la teoría de M.Mahler, y los supuestos básicos de W.Bion, 3) Sobre la Psicoterapia de Grupo, 4) Organizando el grupo, 5) Matriz grupal y 6) Factores terapéuticos en psicoterapia de grupo. Además, el Dr Urlic condujo un grupo mediano experiencial.

La curiosidad y motivación de nuestros colegas egípcios por aprender era impresionante. El

LA SECCIÓN DE PSICODRAMA DE LA IAGPLa sección de Psicodrama de la IAGP ha estado

activa en los últimos dos años. Su lista de discusión online ha aumentado hasta 561 miembros. Se ha creado una Lista Mundial de Discusión de Psicodrama, abierta no sólo a los miembros de la IAGP, para dar lugar a pensamientos, ideas, proyectos e interacción sobre Psicodrama y para reclutar nuevos miembros para la Sección y para la IAGP.

Existe un Comité Coordinador de la Sección de Psicodrama formado por 15 miembros: Manuela Maciel (Portugal), Sue Daniel (Australia), Judith Teszary (Suecia), Michael Wieser (Austria), Mario Buchbinder (Argentina), Peter Felix Kellermann (Israel), Jacob Gershoni (EEUU), Adelsa Cunha (Brasil), Yaacov Naor (Israel), Jeanne Burger (EEUU), Leandra Perrotta (Italia), Marlene Marra (Brasil), Renè Marineau (Canada), Shu Gong (EEUU) y Gabriela

Moita (Portugal). Este comité se reune habitualmente en fechas próximas a las reuniones de la Junta de la IAGP y los miembros de la Junta que son de la Sección de Psicodrama pueden asistir a la reunión.

El comité Coordinador de la Sección de Psicodrama valora la iniciativa expresada durante las reuniones de la Junta por el presidente Jorge Burmeister y el Presidente Electo David Gutmann “de fortalecer aun más a las Secciones”. Me siento motivado para desarrollar un Congreso Regional de la IAGP en 2014.

En Oporto, durante una reunión de la Sección de Psicodrama con más de 50 participantes, hablamos sobre como establecer una red compuesta por miembros individuales y representantes de las Oerganizaciones Afiliadas de Psicodrama. El objetivo era la creación de proyectos comunes de investigación, desarrollar estándares profesionales para la resolución de conflictos, intervención en crisis, y psicodrama con niños. Se creó un comité con los siguientes miembros: Heloisa Fleury (Brasil), Maurizio Gasseau (Italia), Jacob Gershoni, Manuela

Maciel, Rene Marineau y Yaacov Naor. Su propósito es preparar un encuentro de la red de la Sección de Psicodrama que tendrá lugar en Cartagena, Colombia el Domingo 22 de Julio, 2012. Este encuentro ayudará también a preparar un Congreso Regional de la IAGP en 2014, mejorando la red e intentando incluir a todos los psicodramatistas del mundo. ,

La Sección de Psicodrama de la IAGP da soporte al 18º Congreso Internacional de la IAGP en Cartagena de Indias, Colombia 2012 y organizará una Mesa Redonda Desarrollo Futuro del Psicodrama en el Mundo en este evento. Varios miembros de la Sección de Psicodrama de la IAGP están también trabajando en la organización de la 4ª Conferencia de Sociodrama que se celebrará en Italia en Septiembre de 2013 y su Comité Científico ha pedido a la Junta de la IAGP y a su Ejecutiva dar soporte a dicha Conferencia.

Sociodrama in a Changing World, Edited by Ron Weiner, Di Adderly and Kate Kirk; Published by Lulu 2011, ISBN 978-1-4466-1786-1

In this book there is a rich international contribution from 37 authors. This is a challenge for any editor. The reader will need time to digest the complexity of the subject matter: country, culture, practice modality, intervention style, loci and foci. From the outset it is professionally presented and intuitively Morenian.

Never judge a book by its cover, so the saying goes. The cover tells us that the editors are aware of the Peter’s Projection Map view of the world and it is a challenge to the reader to avoid a Euro-centric, U.S.A.-centric or simple view. Instead the Peter’s Projection map on the front cover values each hectare on the world map equally -- just as Moreno valued each human being. I visualise Margaret Meade and Gregory Bateson, two of Moreno’s contemporaries who contributed to Morenian journals, observing New Guinea indigenous people role reversing in a tribal dance and then discussing this with Moreno. This indigenous practice is documented on film by Bateson. So metaphorically, the book’s cover sets the world as the Morenian stage and the drama begins!

The reader is enlivened by the diversity, skill and passion shown by the authors of the book’s 34 chapters. I suggest definitely read the introduction, then dip into chapters of interest. Within the book there is debate on what sociodrama is. The cover editorial uses adjectives, such as flexible, creative and spontaneous. Antonia Garcia explores the boundaries between psychodrama and sociodrama. This excellent chapter includes comments on duty of care and discourages both self disclosure in sociodrama and converting sociodrama into psychodrama.

In examining the historical context Adam Blatner contributes a chapter that begins with the resistance to the use of sociodrama. Thomas Wittinger comments on this too and notes that sociodrama participants “find out the effect that collective values and experiences have…how their own activities and decisions can influence the group, the organization and political developments.”

Rollo Browne contributes two chapters and his transcript of a pressured management situation is pertinent to the stresses in contemporary society. Pablo Alvarez Valcarce writes about team coaching. Marcia Karp continues the contemporary theme with a

chapter relating to the Greek financial crisis.The translation and editorial team have produced

an easy to read volume, which has a consistent flow of style, speech and content. In contrast to the work of sociometrists like Ann Hale and the diagrams Moreno used to illustrate his work, the book has few diagrams and tables. However, Irina Stefanescu and those writers who have contributed to a visual presentation style should be applauded; the translation from kinaesthetic methods to the written word is sometimes difficult for practitioners who love action; visual additions assist readers with other learning styles.

Sociodrama in a Changing World is a unique and comprehensive book. I congratulate the translators and editors. It is highly recommended as a timely and affordable addition to any professional library. I look forward to the possibility of a second edition, hopefully, with contributors from Africa and further areas of Oceania.

En este libro se puede encontrar una rica contribución internacional de 37 autores. Es un reto para cualquier editor. El lector necesitará tiempo para asimilar la complejidad de la materia tratada: país, cultura, modalidad de práctica, estilo de intervención, bibliografía y citas señaladas. Desde el inicio la presentación es profesional e intuitivamente moreniana.

El refrán dice que no hay que juzgar un libro por la tapa. La tapa nos dice que los editores contemplan la Proyección de Peter en el mapa del mundo lo que supone una propuesta para que el lector se aleje de un punto de vista eurocéntrico, U.S.A. céntrico o simplista. Por el contrario El mapa con la Proyección de Peter en la cubierta considera cada hectárea en el mapa del mundo de modo idéntico –del mismo modo que Moreno valoraba a cada ser humano. Visualizo a Margaret Mead y George Bateson, dos contemporáneos de Moreno que contribuyeron en las publicaciones morenianas, observando el cambio de roles de los indígenas de Nueva Guinea en una danza

tribal y tratándolo con él. Esta práctica indígena está documentada en una película de Bateson. De este modo metafórico la cubierta del libro establece el mundo como en el escenario de Moreno y ¡el drama comienza!

El lector se ve animado por la diversidad, capacidad y pasión desplegadas por los autores de los 34 capítulos del libro. Recomiendo leer la introducción, después zambullirse en los capítulos de interés. En el libro hay un debate sobre qué es el sociodrama. El editorial de la cubierta utiliza adjetivos tales como flexible, creativo y espontáneo. Antonia García explora los límites entre psicodrama y sociodrama. Este excelente capítulo incluye comentarios sobre el deber de cuidado y advierte en contra de la exposición individual como de la conversión del sociodrama en psicodrama. Thomas Wittinger trata también sobre ello y señala que los participantes del sociodrama “exploran el efecto que tienen los valores y experiencias compartidos…, cómo sus propias acciones y decisiones influencian al grupo, a la organización y a los desarrollos políticos.”

Rollo Browne contribuye con dos capítulos y su transcripción de una situación de gestión muy presionada es pertinente a las presiones en la sociedad contemporánea. Pablo Alvarez Valcarce escribe sobre el equipo de coaching. Marcia Karp continúa con lo actual en un capítulo relativo a la crisis financiera de Grecia.

El equipo editorial y de traducción ha producido un libro fácil de leer, con un estilo, lenguaje y contenido constantes. Por contraste al trabajo de sociometristas como Ann Hale y a los diagramas que Moreno utilizaba para ilustrar su trabajo, el libro incluye pocos diagramas y tablas. Sin embargo, Irina Stefanescu y los demás escritores que han contribuido a un estilo de presentación visual deben ser aplaudidos por ello; la transformación de métodos kinestésicos en palabras escritas es en ocasiones difícil para los profesionales amantes de la acción; las soportes visuales ayudan a los lectores con otros estilos de aprendizaje.

El Sociodrama en un Mundo en Cambio es un libro único y completo. Felicito a editores y traductores. Es un libro altamente recomendable como adquisición oportuna y asumible para la biblioteca de cualquier profesional. Espero que pronto se dé la posibilidad de una segunda edición, con suerte, con la contribución de profesionales de África y otras áreas de Oceanía.

LA IAGP INVITADA AL CONGRESO DE LA SOCIEDADE PORTUGUESA DE PSICODRAMA PSICOANALITICO DE GRUPO

La Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicodrama Psicoanalítico de Grupo (SPPPG) ha celebrado en Lisboa su II Congreso Internacional los días 9 y 10 de Marzo.

La SPPPG ha invitado a la IAGP a participar en el congreso. Puesto que nuestro presidente estaba en otro congreso, yo participé representando a la IAGP en la ceremonia de inauguración.

El tema del congreso era realmente estimulante: “Liberdade e submissão” (Libertad y sumisión).

La experiencia ha sido muy enriquecedora. Tuve la ocasión de encontrarme con algunos conocidos colegas de la IAGP como los que han sido miembros de la junta directiva: Antonio Roma Torres, Ernesto Fonseca Fàbregas y Manuela Maciel. Gabriela Moita, presidenta de la Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicodrama que organizó nuestro último Congreso Regional Mediterráneo y Atlántico de la IAGP (Oporto, Septiembre 2011) estaba también allí. Hemos tenido participantes de Francia, España, Mozambique, Israel además de los colegas de Portugal.

Luisa Branco Vicente, presidenta de la SPPPG y su equipo, han puesto su esfuerzo y su generosidad en este encuentro. Ya conocemos la hospitalidad de los portugueses. Ya la vivimos en el congreso de Oporto del año pasado. Otra vez hemos sido desbordados por el cuidado recibido, en este caso, por parte de Luisa y su equipo. Su vitalidad quedó patente en la cena de gala en la cual todos bailamos en torno a las mesas y la noche se nos quedó corta.

Siendo yo español, he tenido la ocasión de conectar más con nuestros colegas portugueses, pues es conocido que frecuentemente nos conectamos menos con nuestros vecinos más cercanos. Yo contribuí al programa presentando una comunicación y un taller acerca de la tramsmision transgeneracional del trauma.

Nuestro colega Yaakob Naor coordinó un taller post congreso: “Freedom from the power of silence trough psychodrama” (Libertad ante el poder del silencio por medio del psicodrama). Una experiencia para mí importante desde el punto de vista personal y enriquecedora desde el punto de vista profesional.

Gracias a la SPPPG y a Luisa Branco Vicente. La SPPPG se ha incorporado recientemente a

la IAGP como asociación miembro. Estamos en el proceso de sentir vuestro imput en la IAGP.

and initiated a task force on trauma and disaster management, which is very active and helpful thanks to the efforts of its leader, Esther Stone.

With our members in mind, we are going to revise and streamline our Internet facilities to offer Intranet resources for our Sections and special interest groups, for example supporting projects for community work with homeless children or research projects at university level. We have also established a professional calendar for events in our field on an international scale and finally we have started to empower our Sections to develop their own projects and to become a home for those professionals belonging to them. This also means accepting the challenge to transform IAGP in order to shorten distances between membership and sections and to develop active and inclusive professional networks for our field. In addition we have strengthened our ties with our Latin American affiliates as well as with other affiliates in a truly cooperative manner. Due to all these activities IAGP has sharpened its identity as the international umbrella organisation for our field, offering a broad network of services and projects for our membership.

During this term we have achieved a rich array of projects but I would like to apologise for the errors and omissions we have made during this period. Many colleagues were not sufficiently attended to. For example those living in regions “in the shadow” were not sufficiently seen or heard while our resources were still too limited. This is not easy to accept but this lack also makes it a legacy for our organisation to address their needs more in the future. I feel hope in this regard because our new administration has gathered together professionals with excellent qualifications as members of the new board of directors. So, I have faith that together we will build up an even stronger network after Cartagena. In this sense I am very happy that David Gutmann, the incoming president has already made a new step inviting young colleagues to our future board meetings.

Concerning the past we all agree that it is necessary to give special recognition to those who helped in a meritorious or even outstanding way to build up this organization during the last years. Our by-laws offer in this regard the title of a fellow or distinguished fellow of IAGP. As we have become aware that there have been colleagues over the years who have given their meritorious contribution to our field and to IAGP but were not yet recognized; we agreed to include them in the list of our outstanding members: we have bestowed the title of a distinguished fellow of IAGP upon Giusy Cuomo (Italy), Marcia Karp (UK) and Howard Kibel (USA). We have bestowed the title of a fellow of IAGP upon Heloisa Fleury (Brazil), Jose Fonseca (Brazil), Dalmiro Bustos (Argentina), Monica Zuretti (Argentina), Janine Puget (Argentine), Gerhard Wilke (UK), Göran Ahlin (Sweden), Haim Weinberg (USA and Israel), Benjamin Rippa (Israel), Cecelia Winkelman (Australia), Ethel Tillinger (Australia), Sandra Garfield (USA) and Leyla Navarro (Turkey). Finally we will establish a gallery on our web page for the founding members of IAGP as well as for all former board members of IAGP to honor their contributions and to illustrate our history made by all of them.

Before I close I want to thank especially Heloisa Fleury (Treasurer) who has been a wonderful colleague, a highly competent and trusted adviser, to me in my role as president as well as Ivan Urlic (Secretary) and David Gutmann (President-Elect) for their unconditional support. I also want to thank Frances Bonds-White (Immediate Past President) for her great contributions to our organization. Finally I want to embrace with deep gratitude all the members of the Board of Directors who contributed an enormous amount of work and who made this progress happen. Some of them will leave our Board at the end of this term. They deserve a long and cherishing applause for their dedication: thank you so much, dear colleagues! And last but not least I want to thank the editors of the Forum, Teresa von Sommaruga Howard and Lars Tauvon, and the editors of the Globeletter, Cecelia Winkelman and Ethel Tillinger, for their dedication to our publications and the high quality achieved during these six years of their mandate.

At the end I hope we will keep the spirit of cordiality, solidarity and humanity in the future wherever we meet “repairing together a little bit of the universe we share”.

Discurso del presidente Jorge Burmeister - Cartagena de las Indias 07/20/2012

“Ir allí donde no hay caminos y dejar una huella” de San Agustín.

La actual legislatura está llegando a su fin y este es mi último discurso como presidente. Ha sido una experiencia desafiador para mí dirigir esta organización en una época de conflictos y de una desesperación global. Pero, la cooperación y la compasión emergieron como competencias claves durante estos últimos tres años, capaces de transformar la IAGP. Por primera vez en más de una década nuestra membrecía y los servicios asociados están creciendo. Quiero sinceramente agradecer a todos mis colegas que pertenecen a la administración actual y nuestros socios, que nos han permitido, con su confianza y sus contribuciones, crear una visión prometedora del futuro.

Cartagena nos ha dado la bienvenida durante estos días. Al nivel profesional y humano nos ofrece un escenario único para nuestro encuentro. La transformación social ha sido el foco principal de este congreso que refleja una necesidad básica en el mundo de hoy. Grupos no sólo promueven el cambio. También actúan como agentes de cambio. Por lo tanto, parece a mí más que justificado que nuestro programa ha hecho hincapié en este momento el trabajo educativo y comunitario en grupos como una de nuestras competencias esenciales. Cartagena también ha dado cuenta de la idea de que nuestros congresos podrían convertirse en proyectos de cambio en regiones de desarrollo. Al final, más de 250 colegas de Colombia asisten a este congreso, mientras que no había acaso algún tipo de apego a nuestro campo cuando comenzamos el proyecto hace tres años y medio: esto me hace sentir esperanza porque demuestra que nuestra competencia es realmente necesario y que somos capaces de cambiar. Gracias a los esfuerzos increíbles del comité científico, bajo la dirección de Maite Pi / España y Marléne Marra / Brasil y la plataforma del LOC, entre ellos cinco universidades y Relates, una importante asociación de terapia familiar, hemos logrado vincular nuestra práctica con la entusiasta recepción, el encanto del Caribe y la calidez de la gente como con el interés siempre vivo de nuestros anfitriones que da cuenta de esta intención. Tenemos que agradecer mucho, mucho María Cecilia Orozco y su gran país!

El compromiso de la IAGP con nuestro campo durante los últimos tres años ha culminado en diversos proyectos e iniciativas. Hemos empezado tres programas de formación en Egipto, Palestina / Cisjordania y la India con socios locales competentes, mientras que otras regiones ya han solicitado ser partícipes en programas educativos en el futuro. Hemos patrocinado y siguimos apoyando un proyecto de investigación de seis universidades italianas sobre el impacto social de la mafia. Con algunos de nuestras afiliadas como AGPA, GAS y otros hemos puesto en marcha un proceso para elaborar una norma internacional para la certificación de competencias en nuestro campo. Hemos establecido los términos de una estrecha cooperación con las Naciones Unidas en nombre de la prevención del genocidio y hemos iniciado un grupo de trabajo sobre el trauma y la gestión de desastres, que es muy activa gracias a los esfuerzos de su líder, Esther Stone.

Con nuestros socios en mente, estamos revisando revisado nuestros servicios de Internet para ofrecer recursos de la intranet para nuestras secciones formando grupos de intereses especiales, por ejemplo en relación con proyectos de trabajo comunitario con niños sin hogar o proyectos de investigación en

el ámbito universitario. También hemos establecido un calendario de eventos profesionales en nuestro campo a escala internacional y, finalmente, hemos comenzado a capacitar a nuestras secciones para desarrollar sus propios proyectos y para convertirse en un verdadero hogar para aquellos profesionales que pertenecen a ellas. Esto también significa aceptar el reto de transformar la IAGP aún más a fin de acortar las distancias entre los miembros y las secciones y de desarrollar verdaderas redes profesionales activas e inclusivas para nuestro campo.

Además, hemos reforzado nuestros lazos con nuestros afiliados de América Latina, así como con otros afiliados de una manera verdaderamente cooperativa. Debido a todas estas actividades la IAGP ha agudizado su perfil de identidad como la verdadera organización paraguas internacional de nuestro campo que ofrece una amplia red de servicios y proyectos para nuestros miembros.

Durante esta legislatura, hemos logrado un balance más bien rico, pero me gustaría pedir disculpas también por los errores y las omisiones que hemos cometido durante este mismo período. Muchos colegas no fueron atendidos lo suficiente de nuestra parte. Por ejemplo los que viven en regiones “en la sombra” no eran lo suficientemente visto u oído, mientras que nuestros recursos eran todavía demasiado limitado. Esto no es fácil de aceptar, pero esta carencia también hace que sea un verdadero legado para nuestra organización para desarrollarse aún más en el futuro. Siento esperanza en este sentido debido a que nuestra nueva administración ha reunido a profesionales con excelentes calificaciones como miembros para el nuevo consejo de administración. Por lo tanto, tengo fe en que vamos a construir juntos una red aún más fuerte después de Cartagena. En este sentido estoy muy contento de que David Gutmann, el presidente entrante ya ha hecho un nuevo paso invitando a dos compañeros jóvenes a nuestras reuniones de la Junta.

En cuanto al pasado, todos estamos de acuerdo en que es necesario dar crédito especial a los que ayudaron de una forma meritoria o sobresaliente a construir esta organización durante los últimos años. Nuestra constitución ofrece en este sentido, el título de un compañero (fellow) o compañero distinguido (distinguished fellow) de la IAGP. Como nos hemos dado cuenta de que había colegas durante los años que dieron su contribución meritoria a nuestro campo y a la IAGP, pero que todavía no fueron reconocidos como tal hemos acordado ahora su inclusión de forma explícita en la lista de los miembros destacados. Hemos otorgado el título de un miembro distinguido de la IAGP a Giusy Cuomo / Italia, Marcia Karp / GB y Howard Kibel / EE.UU. Hemos otorgado el título de miembro de la IAGP a Heloisa Fleury / Brasil, José Fonseca / Brasil, Dalmiro Bustos / Argentina, Mónica Zuretti / Argentina, Janine Puget / Argentina, Wilke Gerhard / GB, Göran Ahlin / Suecia, Benjamin Rippa / Israel, Haim Weinberg / EE.UU. e Israel, Cecelia Winkelman / Australia, Ethel Tillinger / Australia, Sandra Garfield / EE.UU. y Leyla Navarro / Turquía. También quiero dar las gracias a Frances Bonds-White por sus grandes contribuciones para nuestra organización. Por último, quiero abrazar con gratitud todos los miembros de la junta de directores que se esmeraron por una enorme cantidad de trabajo y que hicieron todo este progreso posible. 27 de Mayo Conflicto y Reconciliación en Grupos, Parejas, Familia y Sociedad, Catherina Mela (Grecia), la moderadora de la lista de la Sección de

Grupoanálisis hizo una presentación sobre el Cerebro Social como expresión de la plasticidad cerebral en Grupoanálisis en la mesa redonda sobre Investigación, coordinado por Edith Lecourt. Esta presentación es una continuación del diálogo permanente entre grupoanálisis y neurociencias que se inició en la Conferencia de la American Group Psychotherapy Association en New York, Febrero, 2011, y continuó en la 4ª Conferencia Regional del Mediterráneo y el Atlántico de la IAGP en Oporto, Septiembre, 2011.

En este momento, contamos con un nuevo miembro y otro nos ha dejado.

Temas que necesitan ser clarificados:La ejecutiva ha respondido a un tema que surgió

en esta sección. El tema relacionado con la necesidad de que la Guía de la Junta Directiva de la IAGP contemple como las Secciones creen una actividad de la IAGP. Las Secciones necesitan una guía sobre como relacionarse con sus afiliadas, ya sea desde la Sección misma o desde la IAGP en su conjunto. Las normativas de la Junta aportan límites para las actividades de las Secciones en cooperación con otras secciones u Organizaciones afiliadas. Estas actividades de cooperación podrían aportar a la IAGP más conexiones científicas y visibilidad.

IAGP. En mi propuesta de participación en la Junta de la IAGP propuse la elaboración de un programa comunitario internacional externo. Me sentí honrada de que se me pidiera coordinar el grupo de trabajo de nueva creación Desastre/Trauma (D/T TF). La primera cuestión era ¿cómo empezar? Y nuestra primera tarea ¿qué podemos hacer realmente? Estaban ocurriendo varios desastres

naturales: Los terremotos en Haití y Brasil; una tragedia en Bangladesh y el terremoto/tsunami/escape rediactivo en Japón. Cuando contactábamos con nuestros colegas en dichas áreas y atendiamos a sus respuestas, vinieron a mi mente las lecciones de mi primera formación en trabajo social. Nuestra primera respuesta fue dar a conocer a nuestros colegas la existencia del D/T TF, que teníamos recursos materiales y de consulta disponibles. Y esperamos pacientemente a que se nos solicitara ayuda al mismo tiempo que lo consultábamos de forma periódica.

El 11 de marzo de 2012 era el primer aniversario del terremoto/tsunami en la región de Tohoku de Japón. Durante este año, yo, así como otros miembros de la IAGP, estuvimos en contacto continuo con Hidefumi Kotani, miembro anterior de la Junta de la IAGP, que vive en Tokio. La sensibilidad a las diferencias culturales, Este y Oeste, fue esencial para poder forjar una conexión íntima. Fue muy importante conocer las respuestas japonesas a los desastres

intercambio de conocimiento y experiencia fue estimulante tanto para los participantes como para Dr Urlic. Era remarcable la apertura y la valentía en sincerarse de los participantes.

Desde su llegada hasta su marcha el Dr Urlic apreció la cálida hospitalidad y amabilidad que se le manifestó. Está agradecido a Mona Rakhawy, Presidenta de EAGT, y Muhamed Taha, Secretaria, quienes, junto a otros colegas, ajustaron el programa de forma eficiente a las dinámicas del taller. Como la lista de temas ofrecidos excedía el tiempo disponible, bajo la sugerencia de los organizadores, el Dr Urlic eligió los temas que parecían más apropiados para dar respuesta a la dinámica grupal emergente.

La siguiente visita a El Cairo tendrá lugar del 1 al 3 de Junio, 2012. Catherina Mela conducirá el seminario y taller, centrandose en los temas 1) Grupos grupoanalíticos pequeños, medianos y grandes, 2) La matriz grupoanalítica y sus correlaciones con la función de la plasticidad cerebral.

2. El Proyecto de Indiapor Sue Daniel El Proyecto de India está coordinado por Sue Daniel

(Australia). La discusión de Jorge Burmeister (España) sobre el proyecto Formación y Supervisión en Métodos Grupales continuó entre Sue Daniel y Magdalene Jeyarathnam (India), Fundadora / Directora del Centro Este Oeste para Counselling y Formación en Chennai. Las conversaciones se han centrado sobre talleres continuados, acreditación y un plan de desarrollo regional, que podría incluir Kerala y Bangalore. Este

proyecto es un hito para proveer formación en trabajo grupal y un vehículo para aprender sobre la cultura Hindú. La primera visita de Sue está programada entre el 4 y el 20 de Diciembre, 2012. Se realizará un taller de formación en psicodrama de cinco días, un evento formativo de tres días y varias conferencias con una variedad de colegas y universidades. Gregorio Armañanzas Ros (España) se unirá al proyecto y Sue también invitará a otros para colaborar en 2013 y 2014.

3. El Proyecto Ramallahpor Ursula Hauser El Proyecto de Ramallah, Palestina está coordinado

por Ursula Hauser (Costa Rica), Sue Daniel (Australia) y Maurizio Gasseau (Italia). Ursula Hauser es la Coordinadora y formadora del Proyecto para la Formación en Psicoterapia de Grupos y Métodos en Procesos Grupales en Ramallah. Su proyecto va a ser conducido en colaboración con colegas del Centro de Tratamiento y Rehabilitación para Víctimas de Tortura (TRC) en Ramallah, Palestina. El TRC envió una petición a la IAGP el 3 de Agosto de 2011 de un programa de formación que incorporara varios métodos de psicoterapia xde grupo. Se aprobó como proyecto por la Junta de la IAGP en Enero de 2012.

Los que participaron en la propuesta fueron Khader Rasras, Jefe del Departamento de Formación del TRC, Mahmoud Sehwail, Director del TRC, Maja Hess, Presidente de MIS, y los miembros de la Junta de la IAGP Jorge Burmeister, Sue Daniel, Maurizio Gasseau y Catherina Mela.

El programa de tres años incluirá un total de 360 horas de formación:

1r año: Introducción básica con varios métodos grupales (Psicodrama, Grupoanálisis, Terapia Familiar, modelos de Terapia del Trauma) para todos los participantes del Proyecto Fromativo.

2º año: Subgrupos que hayan elegido una modalidad específica de terapia de grupo, 4 cursos en el método elegido.

3r año: Supervisión de trabajo grupal con el formador del método grupal elegido.

Los estándares para los métodos de evaluación y valoración aun no se han desarrollado.

naturales, que históricamente han sido muchos: terremotos, tifones, erupciones volcánicas. A menudo la respuesta es “shikata ga nai – no se puede hacer nada.” y uno necesita ejercer gaman(1), resistencia, que es enfrentarse al desastre y al dolor con dignidad, sin perder el control y pedir ayuda. La gente permanece en sus comunidades, manteniéndose firme, aunque pueda haber miedo y desesperanza, y creer que todo será como antes. endurance, which is facing disaster and pain with dignity, without loosing control and asking for help. People stay in their communities, remain steadfast, though there may be fear and hopelessness, and believe everything will be as before. Es evidente que gaman puede ser una pendiente resbaladiza.

Cuando el desastre golpeó Japón nuestro impulso immediato fue preguntar “que acciones podemos hacer” però enseguida entendimos que debíamos “retenernos” y únicamente repetir nuestro mensaje de que estábamos ahí. Irónicamente, llegamos a entender que era un proceso similar (paralelo) al que el Dr. Kotani y su equipo estaban experimentando. Ellos empezaron a organizar su trabajo comunitario en Tokio y Sendai (región de Tohoku) la semana después de los desastres. Cada experiencia con las víctimas y sus cuidadores reforzaron la necesidad de de sintonía cultural, la importancia de proveer de un “espacio seguro”, y pacientemente desarrollar confianza. El resultado fue la modificación de su intervención, pero no de su objetivo. Por ejemplo; en la formación de profesionales la

orientación psicoterapéutica de diagnosticar y tratar el SEPT se cambió por talleres psicoeducativos.

El Dr. Kotani y su equipo tienen una formación y orientación psicológica y son de la gran ciudad, Tokyo. Los desastres ocurrieron en el Este de Japón, en la zona donde existe una comprensión y respuesta al trabajo del trauma más tradicional, histórica o familiar. Esto resultó en una desconexión entre los dos grupos. Las ofertas iniciales de ayuda del equipo encontraron vacilación y resistencia. El equipo perseveró y continuó contactando con el personal escolar, psicólogos, y padres, modificando su enfoque hacia una mayor sensibilidad hacia la población. En Septiembre de 2011 se estableció el Centro del Este de Japón para Servicios Clínicos Educativos Gratis ofreciendo servicios clínicos y talleres. Pensado para llegar a profesionales que están trabajando con víctimas y supervivientes. Estos cuidadores están exhaustos però no descansan o piden ayuda para ellos mismos (gaman). Y como resultado no reconocen el estrés y peaje que están experimentando.

En su relato de los acontecimientos de sus experiencias: My Experience in East Japan: Disaster and Safe Space for People (Mi Experiencia en el Este de Japón: Desastre y Espacio de seguridad para las personas), El informe del Dr. Kotani añade este subtítulo - “Hay tantas cosas que podemos hacer. Però realmente podemos hacer poco”(2) En una comunicación reciente (Marzo 2012) él escribe “---- existía una necesidad de intervención para romper la lentitud de la corriente en revivir. Especialment en el Noroeste de Japón, la cultura de aceptar el destino en los desastres y presiones de los poderes superiores es mayor

que en otras áreas de Japón, debido a su historia. Estas actitudes características se enfatizan demasiado y se es dependiente de ellas. Se puede simbolizar con la palabra clave “Ganbaro Tohoku (cuélgaselo a Tohoku) …. De todos modos vamos avanzando”(3)

En Marzo la Asociación Internacional para la Psicología del Desarrollo (IADP) celebró un pre-congreso en Sendai. El tema era trauma y la esperanza era disipar la comprensión incorrecta del tratamiento de grupo especialmente como una modalidad efectiva (grupos pequeños y grandes) para el tratamiento del trauma. Bonnie Buchele de la IAGP fue la conferenciante de la plenaria. El pre-congreso fue un éxito y se destacó el soporte de la IAGP. Después el Dr. Kotani escribió:

“Creo que nuestra colaboración fue realmente algo más y tan impresionante para ellos como el hecho de que se realizara un trabajo conjunto internacional con la IAGP”
