Year 3 will journey across millions of years of prehistory and be immersed in the prehistoric world, exploring and

questioning how palaeontologists and archaeologists find out what the world was like millions of years ago. They

will discover and explore dinosaurs, early man and Ice Age animals, as well as investigating what life was like in Brit-

ain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

Science († - Creation) (BV—Mutual Respect) (Article 29) As scientists we will be exploring rocks in our environment and finding out how they are formed by working scien-tifically on a variety of quick challenges and longer tasks to learn about rocks. This topic covers the properties and uses of rocks, the rock family, soils and finally fossils. English links: Read about and research different rocks/minerals. Plan how to construct a Facebook page for a ‘pet rock’. Plan how to present findings.

Maths (Article 29) As Mathematicians we will be: Understanding about Number and place value by: Learning about the value of the hundreds, representing numbers to 1,000, recognise the val-

ue of 100’s, 10’s and 1’s. Learn how to identify numbers to 1,000 on a number line. Find 1, 10, 100 more or less than a given number. Compare objects and numbers to 1,000. Order numbers and count in 50’s.

Understanding addition and subtraction by: Adding and subtraction multiple of 100. Adding and subtracting 3-diigit and 1-digit numbers crossing and not

crossing 10. Adding and subtracting 3-diigit and 2-digit numbers crossing and not crossing 100. Spot patterns in addition and subtraction. Subtract a 3 digit number from a 3 digit number with no exchange.

Throughout our learning we will deepen our knowledge by reasoning and problem solving investigations.

The Arts (Articles 29 and 31) As artists we will be focusing on painting techniques such as: Using a number of brush techniques using thick and thin brushes to produce shape and lines . Using watercolour paint to produce washes for backgrounds. As design technicians we will be: Learning how to use Stiff and Flexible sheet materials to build replicates of different artefacts that we will

look at during our Prehistoric topic.

English Year 3 will write an explanation on ‘How did humans in the Stone Age collect their food? ‘ At the end of the half term, Year 2 will prepare a poem (haiku, tanka and kennings).

PSHE († - Koinonia, Peace, Justice, Friendship and Compassion) (Articles 2, 12, 13, 14, 15) (BV - Democracy, Rule of Law,

Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs) Being Me in My World As good citizens we will be: Understanding being part of a class team. Learning about being a school citizen. Learning about the rights, responsibilities and democracy (Rights ambassadors). Understanding rewards and consequences. Learning how to make group decisions. Understanding how to have a voice.

Trip: As explorers we will be visiting the Museum of London.

RECOVERY CURRICULUM. The Black Hat- Children are to use their planning sheets to produce an independent

narrative. They should include a variety of the skills recapped from Yr2 and new Yr3 skills learnt throughout the unit, in

Geography († - Creation) (BV—Mutual Respect) (Articles 12, 13, 17, 24, 29) Year 3 will discover weird and wonderful plants of the world as they find out about flora in all seven continents. They will locate continents and countries on a world map, identify climate zones and biomes (and the plants that grow in them), explore ways in which humans use plants and much more. Book link: Wangari’s Trees of Peace- This true story of Wangari Maathai, an environmentalist and first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. She is a shining example of how one woman's passion, vision, and determination inspired great change.

Get ready to be transformed into a green-fingered gardener. As scientists we will be learning all about the fascinating world plants! We will be identifying the functions of the different parts of a plant, find out what plants need in order to grow well and explore how plants reproduce, all through engaging lessons and activities and investigation. English links Explaining what happens as light travels and how it reflects on a surface. Describing the different times of day and how this is shown through the world around us.

The Arts (Articles 29 and 31) As artists we will be focusing on Print such as: Making a print with impressed designs using materials such as plasticine, clay and polystyrene press

print tiles. Using rollers with printing inks. Using layers of two or more colours. As design technicians we will be focusing on: Textiles and sewing using different images/pictures/symbols.

English (BV—Mutual Respect) (Articles 2, 1, 17 and 29) Year 3 will write an explanation on ‘What is pollution?’ Year 3 will find out who Wangari Maathai is and how she started the Green Belt Movement and write a

report on their findings.

Bedtime Stories. Year 3 will create an original bedtime story book- a story about helping a dragon return home.

RE († - Creation) (BV—Mutual Respect and Tolerance) (Articles 13, 14, 29, 30) Children will recall information about various creation stories. They will go on to find out how various religions account for the creation of plants before looking at why plants are important and what they give us.

PSHE († - Compassion, Friendship and Justice) (Articles 2, 9, 19, 12) (BV - Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs) Celebrating Differences As good citizens we will be: Understanding that everybody’s family is different and important to them. Understanding that differences and conflicts sometimes happen among family members. Learning what it means to be a witness to bullying and that witnesses can make the situation better or worse by what they do. Learning that some words are used in hurtful ways. Reflecting on a time when my own words affected someone’s feelings and what the consequences were.

’Celebrating our Community ‘ event and we will be researching and mak-

ing a traditional dish.

English ( BV - Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those of Different

Faiths and Beliefs) (Articles 2, 19, 12, 13, 14, 30)

During ‘Celebrating Our Community’ week, English/literacy lessons will be based on a new book each day, helping

the children to learn, grow, discuss, and begin to create a future that resolves differences which works perfectly

alongside the PSHE lessons they will do that week too. The children will focus on a range of books with inspiring

messages of peace, love and truth to lift others up with kindness and courage.

The book we will start off with as a whole school is a wonderful book called ‘Let’s Talk About

Race’ by Julius Lester. A springboard for discussions about differences, this book explores what

makes each of us special.

Other book themes include:

Growing and learning from each other's traditions- where diversity is a strength.

The Bindi- its cultural significance.

Personal boundaries and asking for permission – strangers touching black hair.

African-American identity.

Finally, we will end the week with the theme of loving who you are, respecting others, and

being kind to one another.

PE (Articles 24, 29 and 31) As athletes we will be: Learning to play tag rugby by passing, catching and evading

an attacker.

Computing (Articles 17 and 29) As communicators we will be: Learning how to use Google Classrooms effec-

tively,

Science († - Creation) (BV—Individual Liberty) (Articles 24, 17, 29) As scientists we will be exploring food and our bodies. In our scientific communities we will learn all about how hu-mans need specific nutrition to help them move and grow; including how humans have skeletons, joints and muscles to help their bodies move. We will be observing and comparing animals with and without skeletons. As scientists we will have plenty of opportunities to gather, record and present data in different ways. English links Explaining how our bodies move and grow through the skeleton bones, joints and muscles. Describing the differences between animals with and without skeletons. Explaining the information we have gathered and what these findings mean.

History († - Justice and Koinonia) (BV—Tolerance and Mutual Respect) (Articles 12, 13, 17, 29) Year 3 will understand and become more familiar with the ancient Egyptian civilisation. From mummification to the River Nile, they will find out all about life in ancient Egypt and what we can learn from the evidence the ancient Egyptians left behind.

As Philosophers we will be: Learning the story of Prince Siddhartha and can name some of the key characters. Leaning why Buddhists do not believe that having material objects is important. Understanding what it means to make a ‘sacrifice’ to help others. Learning that stories are an important part of Buddhist teachings and can name a well-known Buddhist story. Understanding the importance of showing kindness to others.

standing the four part beat and putting on a performance.

Maths (Article 29) As Mathematicians we will be: Understanding about multiplication and division by: Comparing mathematical statements, learning to multiply 2 digits by 1 digit, divide a 2 digit

number by a 1 digit number, learning about scaling. Understanding about money by: Learning about pounds and pence, converting between pounds and pence, learning to subtract money and giving

change. As Statisticians we will: Learn about and interpret data within: pictograms, bar charts and tables. Throughout our learning we will deepen our knowledge by reasoning and problem solving investigations.

The Arts (Articles 29 and 31) As artists we will be focusing on drawing techniques such as: Sketching objects having a third dimension. Using different hardness of pencils to show line, tone and texture. As design technicians we will be focusing on: Using mouldable materials to make clay canopic jars.

English (BV—Tolerance and Mutual Respect) (Articles 12, 13, 17, 29) Tadeo Jones– Based on the story of Tadeo Jones, an adventurer who enters a pyramid where he finds a

family of mummies. Yr3 will use the main events from the character’s daily life to write their own story.

Children will attempt to use fronted adverbials (time conjunctions) to sequence their writing.

Your class will explore dark tombs and consider why nothing can be seen without light, use mirrors to help soldiers guarding a pyramid to see around corners, compare ancient Egyptian beliefs in the sun god Ra to modern explanations of the Sun, find out how obelisks were used to tell the time, and much more!

Computing (Articles 17 and 29) As vloggers we will be: Learning to present information by making and

sharing a short screencast presentation.

RE (BV—Tolerance and Mutual Respect) (Articles 13, 14 and 29) Year 3 will be introduced to some of the most famous people of the Bible and Torah with ‘Israelites in Ancient Egypt’. They will find out about a promise God made to Abraham and how this promise was fulfilled through his descendants. They will travel with Joseph to Egypt and find out how and why a boy from Canaan ended up as the Pharaoh’s second-in-command, how this led to Jacob’s (Israel’s) whole family settling in Egypt, how the Israelites became slaves to the Egyptians and finally how they escaped to reach the land God had promised them.

We will be learning all about the moon from real life and secondary sources. We will be learning about the history of space exploration in particular what hap-pened in the ‘Space Race’ in 1960. We will be exploring what it is like to be an astronaut by identifying the best foods to take to space and what factors affect the design of a space suit. We will be immersed in what life was like in Roman times by: research, role-play, Escape to Pompeii and The Ro-man Record and using this knowledge we will write a variety of recounts to create a Roman newspaper. We will be writing a persuasive letter, persuading someone to be a Roman Soldier—using all our new knowledge about the Romans. Year 3 will be learning to: Use formal/informal style Consistently use 1st or 3rd person in our writing, Include a mixture of sentences types in our writing.
