Gustarto be pleasing to, to like

• There are two parts to the gustar verb.• First, you have either:– me (to me)– te (to you)– le (to him/her/you)– nos (to us)– les (to them)

Page 7: Year stuff

Gustar

• Then we have a form of “gustar”.• In the present tense we either have:– gusta– gustan

• Which form we have depends on if the item we like is plural or singular.

Page 8: Year stuff

Gustar• Me gusta la comida.– I like the food– More literal translation: The food is pleasing to me– We use “gusta” because “comida” is singular

• Te gustan los huevos.– You like the eggs.– The eggs are pleasing to you.– We use “gustan” because “huevos” are plural.

Note: if you put an un-conjugated verb (also known as an “infinitive”) after “gustar” then you will always use “gusta”, never “gustan”

Gustar

• When we use “le” or “les” we sometimes need to add in who we are talking about.

• For example: A David le gusta la manzana.– David likes the apple/To David, the apple is pleasing

to him.– We include “a David” so that we know who the “le”

refers to. – However, if we have been talking about David in

past sentences then we do not need to say “a David”.
