This Really Good Stuff ® product includes: • Year-Round Writing Prompts Box • 80 Writing Prompt Cards, 20 for each season • 20 Blank Prompt Cards, 5 for each season • This Really Good Stuff ® Activity Guide Assembling and Displaying the Year-Round Writing Prompts Kit Before using the Year-Round Writing Prompts Kit, make copies of this Really Good Stuff ® Activity Guide and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Band the Writing Prompt Cards together according to season and store them in a zippered plastic bag inside the Box when not in use. Introducing the Year-Round Writing Prompts Kit for Whole Class Use The Prompt Cards include a variety of prompts for writing in different modes and formats for each season, allowing you to choose appropriate prompts for your writing lessons. Choose the desired Prompt Cards for the season, and place them inside the Year-Round Writing Prompts Box. Explain to students that they are going to choose a writing prompt for the day’s writing lesson. Hold up the Box, and show the students each side. Have students identify the current season, and place the Box with that side facing the students. Ask a volunteer to choose a Prompt Card and read the prompt aloud. Write that prompt on the board, and encourage students to brainstorm some ideas as you record them underneath. Have students write the number of the chosen prompt at the top of their paper, complete the writing assignment, and share their work with the class. Alternate volunteers so that each student has the chance to choose a Prompt Card for the class. Use the Blank Prompt Cards for each season to label with additional writing prompts more specific to your curriculum and label them with numbers from 21 to 25. Use a copy of the Prompt Tracking Reproducible to keep track of prompts the students have written. Center Work On a copy of the Year-Round Writing Prompts Directions Reproducible, complete Number 5 and laminate it. Place the appropriate Prompt Cards inside the Year-Round Writing Prompts Box, and put it in the writing center. Post the Year-Round Writing Prompts Directions Reproducible nearby to help students use the Kit independently. Remind students to write the number of the chosen Prompt Card at the top of their paper. Copy and post the appropriate Season Word Bank Reproducible in the center so that students can refer to it while planning and writing their response to the writing prompt. Collect the students’ work for assessment. Make and distribute copies of the My Writing Prompts Tracking Reproducible. Each time a student works at the center, instruct him or her to circle the prompt number on the reproducible and then to store it in his or her writing folder. Periodically, check the reproducibles to monitor students’ center work. Small Group Work Choose a Prompts Card to teach a small-group remedial lesson to students who are in need of additional help: Place a chosen Prompts Card in the Box, then pull it out and read it to the group. Discuss the prompt and what it is asking the group to write about. Have the group brainstorm ideas and possible approaches before they begin to write.
