YEAR INREVIEW 2011-2012

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND THE DIRECTOR

The Art Gallery of Ontario is an organization that constantly conveys energy. We gather visitors around ideas and great works of art. We express a point of view about the times in which we live; and we find innovative ways to engage visitors interactively around and through art. In 2011-2012, this energy was delivered through a strong offering of exhibitions, education programs, family activities and community events that brought art and people together. In total, the AGO welcomed 601,693 visitors throughout the year.

We were proud to bring key works from internationally celebrated museums to Toronto, with our two major exhibitions Abstract Expressionist New York: Masterpieces from The Museum of Modern Art and Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde: Masterpieces from the Collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris. We were equally proud to bring Canadian art to the attention of the world with exhibitions like, Haute Culture: General Idea—A Retrospective 1969–1994 organized by the AGO in collaboration with the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. This was the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to the iconic Toronto-based artist collective General Idea and was shown in both Paris and Toronto.

Education was front and centre this year with the opening of our renovated and expanded education area, the Weston Family Learning Centre. This new hub for community creativity and learning—a gathering place for hands-on and online exploration of the creative process—sets a standard for museums around the world, with fully integrated technology that includes broadcast and video-conferencing capabilities and meeting spaces for educational and private functions. The centre includes modernized favourites, such as a redesigned interactive hands-on centre for young families and the AGO’s popular Gallery School for art-making classes, and introduces new spaces like our artist-in-residence studio and education commons to welcome school groups.

As we continue to explore new ways to connect with audiences, social media plays an increasingly important role. Podcasts on the AGO website introduce the AGO’s collections and recast live lectures. Webinars and Twitter interviews allow the public around the world to converse with artists and museum professionals. A series of blogs live on the AGO website for individuals to share their views on virtually every art-related topic. In Gallery spaces, we have introduced Twitter feedback stations and QR codes for smartphones to optimize every individual’s personal experience with art. The AGO is also the first Canadian art museum to join the Google Art Project, enabling the world to enjoy and explore key masterworks from our collection.

In accordance with the AGO’s long-standing commitment to fiscal prudence, the 2011-2012 year was a balanced operation—a challenging task in this time of economic uncertainty. We are very grateful to the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, the Canada Council and the Government of Canada for their ongoing support. We’d also like to thank our many donors and members for their sustained commitment and loyalty. Our members now number more than 80,000, the highest in our history and a true testament to the private sector support that has carried our institution to success since it was founded by a group of citizens more than 100 years ago.

We look back on our accomplishments in 2011-2012 with great satisfaction and pride, and we look forward to making new connections and exploring new frontiers with art in 2012-2013.

ACQUISITION HIGHLIGHTS2011-2012

In 2011-2012, the AGO added 386 strategic acquisitions, strengthening every area of our collection, including prints and drawings, photography and contemporary works. The AGO collection now totals more than 80,000 works.

The following is a brief selection of acquisition highlights from the year:

Of particular note was a group of 10 etchings and woodcuts by the 20th-century German artist Käthe Kollwitz, which were donated by Dr. Brian McCrindle. These were added to the significant holdings of prints and drawings by this major woman artist already in the collection. The following were also added to the AGO’s collection: a striking dye transfer print of Sailors, Key West by Marie Cosindas; The Comper Collection donated 16 works by Yvonne McKague Housser, Jeanne Rhéaume, Marian Dale Scott, Ethel Seath and Pegi Nicol MacLeod; and The Greg Curnoe Bicycle Project, from both the artist and a consortium comprised of Kaye Beeston, Jessica Bradley, Popsy Johnston, Shanitha Kachan, Sarah Milroy and Jeanne Parkin.

NOTES

1. The above statement of operations provides a summary of the AGO’s financial activity for 2011-2012. Financial statements for the 2011-2012 fiscal year (April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012), audited by Ernst & Young, are available upon request from the Art Gallery of Ontario (416 979 6613). 2. Pension adjustment reflects the excess of cash contributions over pension expense each year. 3. In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the AGO received gifts of works of art with an approximate value of $5,498,000. This is not reflected in the financial data above, but is identified in the AGO’s 2011-2012 audited financial statements. 4. The AGO records capital asset purchases at cost and then amortizes its capital assets over the useful life of the asset. Donations and grants received for the purchase of capital assets are deferred and then amortized based on the useful life of the asset.
