A Guide to 2021 Year 8 Subject Selections

Students continue with:•Maths, Science, English, HPE studies.•Student study History for one semester and Geography for one semester•Students continue with their language or literacy support program•Students continue to rotate through technology subjectsStudents choose their Arts elective for 2021.


• Students must preference 1 to 10 their subject selection form.• 4 subjects are offered as whole year options meaning this is the only arts subject they will do•Dance Extension; Drama Extension; Visual Arts Extension; Music Excellence Extension• If students would prefer to study two arts subjects across the year they should preference the 1 semester only subjects higher: Drama, Visual Art; Music; Music Excellence; or Digital Art.

Other Common Questions• Can you change subjects? Yes, but only at set times and only if there is room to move. The fact that students are now only studying subjects for 12 months means less change is encouraged.• Can I study other subjects not offered at Cairns High? No, we offer a greater range of subjects than most schools that all link in with our senior subjects.• Do I have to do Maths, Science, English, History/Geography/Civics and HPE? Yes they are mandatory under Australian Curriculum.


Other Common QuestionsIf I select a subject am I guaranteed a place in that course? No, however it is highly likely you will get a placement. Factors that may prevent you from gaining a placement.•Lack of student numbers mean subject doesn’t run•Too many students choose subjects. Decision will then be made looking at: Your best success pathway
