Year 8 Specialist Subjects: Food Studies: Throughout the semester students learn a range of cooking techniques and methods. They investigate the features of ‘The Healthy Living Pyramid’ and design and produce their own creations. Students participate in a range of practical classes including but not limited to a Chicken Teriyaki Stir-‐fry, Chocolate Chip Cookies and a range of other sweet and savory food items. In doing so students learn the basics in Kitchen Safety and Kitchen Hygiene to prepare them for further study of Food Studies as well as develop life skills. Drama: In Year 8 Drama students undertake the study of comedy. They learn about different styles of comedy such as Commedia dell’ arte, Physical theatre and Parody. They experiment with how their expressive skills, the use of body, voice and facial expressions, can be used to create humorous performances. They gain a further understanding of art elements and principles and demonstrate skills in manipulating these within their personal artwork. Year 8 Art students also explore areas of art appreciation and make personal observations about the content and structure of artworks through analysis. LOTE-‐ Italian: The Year 8 Italian curriculum incorporates various areas that allow students to learn and experience the Italian culture in more detail. The course focuses on a range of topics, which are relevant to the students’ daily lives, like food and the main meals, sport, family and friends. The course encourages students to develop their writing, reading, listening, understanding and speaking skills in Italian so that they can communicate with others.
Year 8 Inquiring Minds Program (IMP): The Inquiring Minds Program (IMP) is an alternative program designed especially for Year 8 students. The program is tailored to meet the needs and interests of the incoming cohort and increase the prevalence of student engagement and satisfaction in learning. This dynamic program provides students with the opportunity to participate in classes that are grounded in authentic learning and geared towards real-‐life contexts. It prepares students for academic success and allows them to learn practical and real life skills that can be transferred outside of the classroom setting. IMP enables students to embrace new experiences and break pre-‐existing boundaries, furthering their discovery of self.
The IMP program demonstrates the importance for young people to learn or pursue:
• Practical and real life skills • Healthy relationships and pro-‐social behavior • Social development • Emotional development • Resilience • Team work and relationship building • Contemporary and relevant skills needed to thrive in the 21st century • Opportunities outside of the classroom setting • Explore different areas of interest in a diverse range of settings
Inquiring Minds Program Workshops:
1 Core (Online Impressions, Impossibly Perfect, Impossible Challenges)
2 Core (Online Impressions, Impossibly Perfect, Impossible Challenges)
3 Electives
4 Electives
5 Inquiry
Note: The details of each of these workshops are outlined below.
Kolbe Catholic College Year 8 and 9 Course Information 2018 Page 7 of 13
What is CORE IMP? The CORE workshops link practical activities with mental and social skills. The program commences with team building activities so that students create strong relationships with their peers. Students explore Cyber Safety in a unit called Online Impressions. They then explore how the media affects body image in a unit entitled Impossibly Perfect. In Term Four students then get an opportunity to refine their study skills and work on what makes a learner great!
What IMP Electives do we offer? All Year 8 students will select an elective for each semester of IMP. The electives provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in an area not offered within the core Year 8 curriculum. Possible IMP electives for 2017 include:
The Modern Man In this elective students will explore the different aspects of maintaining health, strength, flexibility and fitness through boxing training, yoga and maintaining a clean diet.
DigiTech In this elective, students will learn to use range of different Apps that can be utilised in completing work and assessments in other subjects. They will be exposed to a range of industry based Apps that will allow them to be easy for future job positions.
Sports coaching and video analysis In this elective students learn how to effectively correct and improve a selected sporting skill using video analysis. The video analysis will look at the skill performed and then contrast that skill with an elite performer. The analysis tools enable students to see the differences in the result of the performance and also assist in breaking down the skill to enable success.
Mosaic Madness In this elective students will investigate to concepts and different interpretations behind mosaics made using various materials. They will draft and outline a design. Then students produce a mosaic using glass tiles on a piece of MDF board that has potential to be displayed around the college and at display nights.
Rock and Water In this elective, students will investigate The Rock & Water program. The program is founded upon a psycho-‐physical framework. This framework is based upon the notion that the development of body awareness (e.g. the ability to control one’s physical state, i.e. breath) is a precursor to the development of emotional awareness (e.g. the feeling of “butterflies” in the stomach), which in turn, fosters the development of self-‐awareness, the ability to control these emotional responses. Student takes part in practical exercises and then reflect on their emotional responses at the end of the lesson.
Social Justice In this elective students will have the opportunity to make positive contributions to the community and develop a sense of responsibility. This program will also enable students to develop leadership, communication, team-‐work and problem solving skills. Students may also develop a sense of belonging and be motivated to become active, informed local and global citizens.
What is Inquiry? Using the method of Inquiry students are exposed the process of posing their own unique question and answering it. Inquiry is designed to give students ownership over their own learning by being the driving force behind their questions, while the teacher works to help facilitate the students throughout this process. Students are encouraged to take action in their final stages in order to ensure that their work has real-‐world effects.
