Year 6 Work Book Week 5
Hello Y6 from Mr Brown and Miss Wisdom.
It’s hard to believe as I write this new work book that this is already week five!
When we first discussed the possibility of school closing, I never thought it
would last this long. As always, I hope you are all keeping well and helping more
at home which is what I asked of you last week.
This week, I’m including a picture of my extended family including my mum and
dad. I’ve not been able to see them for a long time and during this lock down
period, they celebrated being married for an incredible 50 years! I bet there are
family members you miss a lot and are unable to see. Megan wrote a nice letter
to her Granny and Granda Brown which made their day. Could you do something
similar this week? Even if it’s a really short letter, I guarantee whoever you
decide to write to will be over the moon that you did it and that you were
thinking of them. You never know, you may even get a reply.
Advice for parents/carers:
Here are some tips that we still recommend as a school to help make working at home as smooth as
possible. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to school and we are more than happy to help.
Set and keep a routine similar to a school day that clearly shows when work, play and social times
will happen. Routines can help with behaviour and also help anxiety. This will be very personal for
what works for your family so you could involve everyone in creating and sticking to this routine.
Don’t be too hard on yourselves and please take regular breaks to relieve the stress (it works for
me!)
Children will be confused and probably very anxious about what is happening; advice is to let them
talk and ask questions as much as they need.
If you are lucky enough to have a back garden or a back yard, use it while the weather is good this
week and spend some time outside with your family (and your dog if you are lucky enough to have
a ‘Basil’).
Don’t forget to put work you want to
show us on Twitter and tag our
Twitter page so I can reply and
comment on it
#BenjiesLovesLearning
Please post a picture of any
family members you miss and
are looking forward to seeing
when this is all ver.
We want to see you reading as much
as possible around your house while
you are being safe and staying
indoors. Uploads pictures to Benjies
reading account - @R4PBA
We had some great English and Maths
shared last week and some pictures of
people hard at work helping out at home.
I spotted Mr Lovelidge trying to get in on
the act by posting a picture of a fence he
‘made’. I agree with you Keegan, yours was
much better.
I’m posting another picture of a place I
miss going to and once again want to see
who recognises it first. Keegan won last
week and his prize was a first class flight to
Northern Ireland with a 5 star hotel
included. Unfortunately he couldn’t go due
to lock down. If you think you know where
it is, be the first to post the answer on
Twitter to win another pointless prize!
This picture was taken a
long time ago but it
reminds me of fun times
when we all went on
holiday together.
Week 5: Day 1
English: Descriptive Writing
Title: The Wizard
This week, you will be writing daily descriptions using images I have selected. I will give you some help by
offering sentence starters and vocabulary you may wish to use.
Model Description (Wizard B)
Perched neatly upon his head, sat a purple hat with its point reaching behind him; a shiny gold buckle glistened.
Falling from below his hat, the wizard’s long, grey hair stretched below his shoulders; his moustached curled
and twisted like a pig’s tail.
Grammar and Punctuation
Can you think of 3 synonyms (words that mean the same) for each word?
1. Friendly 2. Angry 3. Happy 4.Run 5. Scared
Day 1: Maths (Place Value)
Write out each number in words and the value of the red digit
1. 4572
2. 2004
3. 8090
4. 2013
5. 27 669
6. 12 907
7. 200456
8. 9021005
9. 10050064
10. 25006007
11. 21060809
12. 430546092
Try and use: varied openers, personification, powerful verbs, powerful adjectives and similes.
I’ve highlighted some of my examples in red.
Now have a go at Wizard A or Wizard B and include as much detail as you can (hat, cloak, shoes, wand, facial features)
Wizard B Wizard A
If you need extra support, write out the columns in your
book and the digits below; this will help you read the
numbers correctly.
M Hth Tth Th H T O
If you find these tricky, just complete the first 6 questions.
Day 2: English
English Task: Scene description
This time, rather than describing a person, you’re going to describe a scene. You will use much of the
same criteria as used yesterday when describing a person (adjectives, similes, personification).
Day 2: Grammar and Punctuation
Enriching our vocabulary is really important so I want you to find more synonyms for the words listed.
Remember, you can use an online thesaurus to help if you have one but can also do it without.
1. Surprised 2. Lonely 3. Bad 4. Tired 5. Upset
Find at least three synonyms for each word.
Day 2: Maths (Place Value)
Write out these numbers in words (consolidation from yesterday):
1. 3405
2. 4098
3. 12304
4. 55250
5. 123445
6. 700870
Partition these numbers (see example)
1. 4539 Example: 5478 = Five thousand + Four hundred + Seventy + Eight
2. 23885
3. 12136
4. 45673 If you find these numbers tricky and want to keep it a little easier, only write out the first four.
5. 909201
6. 400104356
7. 560560781
8. 202070889
Here are some possible sentence starters you
may want to use (or you may not and would
rather use your own)
Protruding through the branches, rays of…
Beams of light glistened…
Standing like soldiers,
Like a sheet of glass,
A swarm of leaves…
Gliding through the air, the sound of…
Day 3: English
Winter scene description
Grammar and Punctuation
From the words you were given on day 1 and 2 (you found synonyms for them), chose 5 of
them and put them into sentences but use the best synonym rather than the original word.
Example
(Tired) After all the work was finished, I was exhausted.
Day 3: Maths
Put each of the numbers in ascending order (smallest to largest)
1. 232 321 23 303 3030 30030
2. 16 1106 6166 6016 60010 6109
3. 21 2.01 211 212 20102 20.002
4. 60.6 6.0 0.06 666 0.06 66.06
5. 34.4 34.04 3040 3.004 304 0.34
6. 0.1 0.01 1.1 1.01 11.01 10101.1 1101.11
Next, find the total of each set of numbers making sure you
line the decimal points up.
After that, calculate the difference between the largest and smallest numbers in each
set.
If you find these a bit tricky, just try the first 4 questions putting the numbers in order.
For this description, describe the winter scene and
write as if you are in it and heading towards the hut.
Include everything you can see like the hut, trees, sky,
snow, lake and also what you can hear.
Use my example and sentence starters to help.
Model example
As I made my way towards the hut, the ice – cold air
attacked my skin; every part of my body begged for
warmth. Above my head, a blanket of clear blue sky
engulfed the entire scene, vacant of even a single
cloud to keep it company. Below my feet, the snow
crunched with every step as I left a fresh path behind
me. Protecting the hut, an army of sentinel tress
stood…
Remember to make sure every
number has a decimal point if any of
them in the list do. Also, add extra
zeros after the decimal point to
make it easier.
For example, change 666 to 666.00
in number 4.
Day 4: English
Scene description using prepositions
Prepositions are used to describe where something or someone is. They can include words
such as: behind, next to, on top of, to the left and many more.
Grammar and Punctuation
Using your descriptive writing from today, see how many prepositions you can write down
in one minute. Get someone to time you and maybe even challenge them. Use the picture
to help you.
Day 4: Maths
Using the digits provided, make as many numbers as possible and write them in ascending
order (see example for support).
Example 4307: 3047 3074 3407 3470 3704 3740 4037 4073 4307 4370 4703
4730 7034 7043 7304 7340 7403 7430
Your numbers:
A. 763
B. 392
C. 624
D. 4078
E. 8021
This is accessible to all of you but if you find it a bit tricky, just complete 1, 2 and 3.
Before Lock Down
Cities, towns and villages used to be
busy places before lock down.
Above the buildings, giant
aeroplanes filled the sky. On the
roads, angry cars slowly crept
forward. Next to the road…
Opposite the…
Behind the…
On top of…
Inside…
Don’t forget to use criteria from the
first three days.
Day 5: English
Descriptive writing final scene
Use what you have written this week to help write a description of this scene. Use the range
of techniques you have included like adjectives, powerful verbs, personification and similes.
Grammar and Punctuation
Another competition. You have one minute to write down as many adjectives as you can but
you can only include one colour. Get an adult or sibling to time you or even compete against
them. Remember that adjectives are used to describe nouns: the smelly man.
You could use my first three to cheat!
Adjectives in a minute: hairy, smelly, angry…
Day 5: Maths
Solving problems using a strategy
In my pocket are the following coins: 2p 2p 5p 50p 10p £1
If I reach into my pocket and pull out 3 random coins, how much money might I have?
Instead of doing random amounts, think about a strategy. Look at my first 3 possibilities and
see if you can follow on.
2p 2p 5p
2p 2p 50p
2p 2p 10p
Don’t forget to include any noises
you would hear and maybe even
smells filling the air.
Week 5: Guided Reading
History and school values
Miss Wisdom had a ‘Victory In Europe Day’ planned to celebrate the end of the war and the
end of our topic. Obviously we were unable to do this but still need to celebrate the end of
the war.
People across Britain showed RESILIENCE to win the war and this is one of our school values.
This week we celebrated 75 years since the war ended. Below are some of the images used
to celebrate our victory in Europe and I would like you to create your own one.
Your poster can be an anniversary one or a poster from the time war ended.
PSHE Year 5 & 6
A focus on: RULE OF LAW
Hello Year 5 & 6,
I hope you are all ok and that you have had a good week? I hope you all enjoyed last week’s
work on democracy and managed to have fun with your family votes! This week we are
going to be focusing on the British Value of the Rule of Law. You will see that the ‘Rule of
Law’ is the second British Value on the British Values Hand and it is represented by the
pointing finger (our second digit).
Task 1 - Take some time to use the British Values hand to memorise all five British Values
and try to list something you already know about each value.
The Rule of Law
‘Laws’ and ‘Rules’ are used in many places and for many reasons. There are all sorts of laws that are
followed nationally by citizens of our country. There are also laws that are followed internationally by
groups of citizens from different countries (the international law of Human Rights and the Rights of a
Child are examples of these). There are also some rules and laws that we follow on a more local basis.
You all follow a set of laws (rules) whilst you are at school. You also may have some rules that you
follow at home. These laws and rules are put in place for lots of reasons and often they are put place
in place to keep you safe.
Watch the following useful story about ‘Shiver’, ‘Gobble’ and ‘Snore’ and why they decided that some
rules and laws are always necessary:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhWVQQQ5hVU
Task 2 – Think of as many reasons as you can as to why we have laws and legal systems. Use the
mind map to write down your reasons.
Why we have
laws
Task 3
Every year parliament makes new laws and also gets rid of old laws no longer needed – For
example you used to not be allowed to eat mince pies on Christmas day! That law has gone-
parliament voted to repeal that law. If you could make one new law what would it be? Why
would you choose this to be your law? How would it improve society? Make a poster to
advertise your new law. Make sure your poster explains why this law would be beneficial for
society and how it would help others. Examples of new laws may include: A law that requires
everyone to do some form of exercise three times a week; a law that reduces the speed limit
down to 20 miles per hour in residential areas; a law that bans the advertising of unhealthy
foods. You are welcome to use one of these examples if you cannot think of your own law.
We would love to see some of your completed posters. Your grown up can share them via the
Benjamin Adlard twitter page if they have a twitter account. It is always lovely to see how well
you are all doing at home.
Well done year 5 and 6…I cannot wait to see what you come up with. I am sure you will have
some amazing ideas. Keep working hard and keep taking care of yourselves and your families.
You are all making us proud with your independent learning and excellent resilience during
this time.

Year 6 – Computing Home Learning – Play, like, share
Watch Episode 2: Who’s Magnus? with your child at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/8_10/watch
Ask your child what they learnt during Episode 2 of Play Like Share.
Explain it is important to think about how someone else might feel if you share a photo or
video of them. Sometimes people share photos or videos that might be unkind, or upset or
embarrass other people.
Ask your child:
1. When does this happen in Play, Like, Share?
2. With your child, read each scenario below and ask them to circle the appropriate thumb. If
you can’t print it, read the scenario and ask them to answer with thumbs up, down and
sideways!
3. Discuss their answers together.
PE
Exercise is important during these difficult days as it makes you feel better and helps you keep a
positive mind-set. You all know this is my favourite subject therefore I want to know that you are
getting daily exercise and keeping fit. Some of you may be lucky enough to have internet access
during your time off. If so, tune in to many of the online activities available on Youtube like Joe
Wicks, The Body Coach as he goes live every morning from 9am (if you are out of bed by then).
Useful websites:
There are many websites which you can use to support your learning or if you want even more work
(although I have set you more than enough to get on with). One of the best ones which you could try is:
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/
This website offers online videos for each lesson so you can watch the daily examples and try some
yourself.
Try and get yourself out of bed earlier if you have been having too many lazy mornings.
Try and look like this.
Not like this.
