Lesson 2 - Tuesday
LearnStandard and non-standard English
Sometimes when you speak, you may use the locally-spoken/non-standard forms of verb inflections.
However, when you are writing down the verb inflections, you should always use standard English.
Standard English is often considered the ‘correct’ form of English, because it is grammatically correct and does not use any slang or dialect.
LearnStandard and non-standard English
RuleTo help with correct verb agreement, the basic rule is:• If the subject is singular (one) the verb must be singular.• If the subject is plural (more than one) the verb must be plural.
I was going to the park - correct - I is singular, so the sentence needs ‘was’ not were.
I were going to the park – incorrect - I is singular, so the sentence needs ‘was’ not were.

Lesson 3 - Wednesday
Learn Colons :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymgszCIoHbA&safe=active
A colon looks like two full stops ( : ), one above the other.
A helpful thing to remember about colons is that because they look like two full stops, they can only be used at the end of an independent clause.
Watch the video below
Learn Colons :
Colons are used in introduce a list.
For example:
There were a few reasons that the wolf did not make a convincing Grandma: his eyes, his ears, his gruff voice and his sharp, pointy teeth.
Little Red Riding Hood carried a selection of provisions for Grandma: a loaf of bread, some apples and a freshly-wrapped pat of butter.
Learn Colons :
Colons can also be used to expand a sentence.
A colon is used to introduce an idea that is an explanation or continuation of the one that comes before the colon.
For example:
There was only one thing the wolf wanted to do now: eat that juicy Little Red Riding Hood.
The flaw in the wolf’s plan was clear to see: he looked nothing like Grandma.
Learn
If the phrase does make sense on its own, we can use a colon. If it does not, we should not use one.
Here is an example:
The pot held pencils, rubbers and elastic bands.
The pot contained the following: pencils, rubbers and elastic bands.

Lesson 4 - Thursday
LearnSemi-colons ;
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zshfdxs
A semi-colon contains a comma and a full stop. It is helpful to remember this.
A semi-colon is stronger than a comma, but not as final as a full stop.
LearnSemi-colons ;
Semi-colons are used to link sentences that are closely related.
For example:The wood was silent and absolutely still; Little Red Riding Hood realised that she had not truly seen its beauty until now.
LearnSemi-colons ;
For example:The wood was silent and absolutely still; Little Red Riding Hood realised that she had not truly seen its beauty until now.
A semi-colon works perfectly here to allow a smooth transition between sentences.
A full stop between the sentences might detract from the impact of Little Red Riding Hood’s observation and create too great a ‘stop’. Using a comma here would be incorrect; a comma cannot be used
to link two independent sentences.
LearnSemi-colons ;
The wolf liked Little Red Riding Hood. Nevertheless, he was looking forward to eating her.
The wolf liked Little Red Riding Hood; nevertheless, he was looking forward to eating her.
Semi-colons can also be used to link one sentence to another closely related sentence that uses a conjunctive
adverb.
LearnSemi-colons ;
Little Red Riding Hood didn’t like the forest much. However, she did like visiting Grandma.
Little Red Riding Hood didn’t like the forest much; however, she did like visiting Grandma.
LearnSemi-colons ;
A semi-colon can also be used to separate items in a list (where the list also contains commas).
There are lots of characters in the story: Big Bad Wolf, the baddie;Little Red Riding Hood, the heroine; Grandma, the victim; and Mr Woodcutter, the rescuer.
We spoke to the main characters: Grandma, 81; Big Bad Wolf, 30;Little Red Riding Hood, 11; and Mr Woodcutter, 55.

Once you have identified the conjunction, re-write the sentence and replace with a semi-colon.

Learn Identifying a correct use of colons, semi-colons and dashes.
Semi-colons can be used to link two closely related independent clauses instead of using a conjunction.
The girls were excited about the party; a real magician would be there.
The semi-colon here provides a smooth transition between the two sentences, hinting to the reader that there is more information to come about the party.

Learn Identifying a correct use of colons, semi-colons and dashes.
Colons can be used to expand a sentence by linking independent clauses. They can introduce an idea that explains or expands on the information before the colon.
The pantomime was a huge success: over two thousand people had booked tickets to see it.
The fact that over two thousand people had booked tickets for the pantomime explains why it was a success.
Learn Identifying a correct use of colons, semi-colons and dashes.
Dashes can also be used to separate or connect two independent clauses, but they are often used in less formal writing.
Lilies are very pretty flowers – they smell disgusting though.
The dash here creates a disconnection in the flow of writing and introduces an unexpected surprise.
Dashes can be used in this way to create shock or humour too.
Learn Identifying a correct use of colons, semi-colons and dashes.
Two dashes can mark out extra information in sentences, similar to brackets.
Tilly – though I can’t quite believe how - jumped straight over the car and ran off into the woods.
The dashes here add extra information to the sentence like brackets would, but they draw more attention to what is written, making it feel more integrated into the main sentence
