Year 3 MathsWeek 5
Week beginning Monday 27th April 2020
We are learning to:
• calculate multiplication by repeated addition
• interpret multiplication as the number of groups
• multiplying by skip counting and dot paper
Follow the learning journey on this PowerPoint; it has a break down for each day from Monday to Friday. There will be a task each day
which could be introduced in a video from our YouTube channel, a link to a different website, a worksheet or an open-ended challenge.
If you want to, you could upload your work to Purple Mash so that your teachers can see how hard you’ve been working.
Day 1
Monday 27th April 2020We are learning how to multiply.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) and complete
the task at the end. If you are unable to access the video, see the next slide for a
visual representation of today’s learning and slide 4 for a copy of today’s task.
CONCRETE
PICTORAL
ABSTRACT
TODAY’S TASK:Now over to you.
Multiplication as groups of items
Find some things around the house (concrete) to
make your own multiplication sums e.g.
hairbands, Pokémon cards or sweets.
Put them into groups.
1. First count the number of groups.
2. Count the number of items in each group.
3. Write the repeated addition.
4. Write the multiplication sum.
5. Calculate and write the answer. How many
are there altogether?
I’ve included an example using skittles
You can also complete this pictorially You
might find some clip art pictures on the internet
or draw your own.
Challenge yourself by writing a problem to
accompany the calculation. Ted had 6
plant pots. He put 5 seeds into each pot.
How many seeds did he plant altogether?
___ +___ + ___ + ___ +___ + ___ =
___ x ___ =
There are ___ seedsYou can upload your photos to the blog or work folder
Day 2
Tuesday 28th April 2020We are learning to multiply using skip counting.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we will
go through some examples from yesterday’s task first.
Today’s task is to continue to develop our multiplication knowledge. We are going to
recap and develop the skip counting strategy.
We are learning to multiply using skip counting Let’s start with the 2x table to refresh
our memory.
There are 2 sheep in one group
How many sheep are there in 10 groups?
We can use the skip counting method to count them.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
There are 20 sheep altogether.
We are learning to multiply using skip counting Let’s move on to 3x table
There are 3 sheep in one group
How many sheep are there in 9 groups?
We can use the skip counting method to count them.
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27
There are 27 sheep altogether.
TODAY’S TASK:Now over to you.
Multiplication as skip counting
You could draw around your hands to help you
skip count or use your own fingers.
1. Practise skip counting the 2, 3, 4, 5, 10x tables.
How confidently can you say them?
Are there any you are unsure of?
If there are, make sure you practise those and
then try it again. Aim for fluency and speed. Ask
a member of your family to listen to you. Perhaps
challenge someone in the house.
Once you are confident, try this.
2. Practise skip counting the 2,3,4,5,10x tables
forwards and backwards (up and down)
Like this:
0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0
If you time yourself, upload your times for
each table
or tell us in the blog – remember it is private
until your teacher publishes it and we don’t
have to.
Tell us which ones are tricky or stumblers for
you.
3. Once you have mastered the challenges
in 1 and 2, try the same task but with the 6x
table or the 7x table.

Day 3
Wednesday 29th April 2020We are learning to multiply using dot paper.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) Hopefully, you
are starting to see an increase in your recall. If not, you can always continue the work
from Day 2 around the rest of the week.
Remember the fluency and speed of recall is important, especially for Y4.
Watch the input on multiplying using dot paper and then complete the task at the
end. If you are unable to access the video, see the next slide for a visual
representation of today’s learning and the slide after that for a copy of today’s task.
Dot paper
Each hen has 2 chicks. How many chicks will 3 hens have?
We can draw this problem using dot paper and it would look like this.
3
1
1
2
2
3 groups of 2
3 x 2 = 6
3 hens will have 6 chicks.
There are 6 dots
altogether if you
count them
Group x item strategy
Group is hens
Items are chicks
TODAY’S TASK:Now over to you.
Multiplication as dot paper
Try to calculate these by drawing the dot paper and using the group x items strategy.
1. There are 9 pairs of socks in the washing basket. How many socks are there altogether?
2. There are 4 hens. If each hen lays 3 eggs, how many eggs will that be altogether?
3. There are 6 elephants waiting for the keeper to wash them. How many elephant legs will he wash
altogether?
4. Lily has 9 pictures. She puts sticky tape on the corner of each picture. How many pieces of sticky
tape does she use?
5. Rory has 8 toy buses. Each bus has 6 wheels. How many wheels are there altogether?
6. Write a worded problem for these dot paper pictures and solve it .
You can upload your photos to the blog or work folder
Day 4
Thursday 30th April 2020We are applying our understanding of multiplication through problem solving and reasoning.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we go
through the answers of yesterday’s questions.
Now let’s try a combination of fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
Now over to you: TODAY’S TASK
1. 8 x 3 =
2.
3.
(If you’re not sure, draw the dot paper
to help you solve this)
4.
5. Complete the multiplication sentence
6. There are 13 biscuits in a packet. How many biscuits are
there in 5 packets. Will I have enough to give each
member of my class (34 children) one each? Explain.
(Use partitioning as I showed you in the video to help you
solve this question)
Day 5
Friday 1st May 2020We are consolidating our understanding of multiplication.
Watch today’s video (click here to access the FOJS YouTube channel) where we go
through the answers of yesterday’s questions and I will be giving you a fun maths
challenge for you to apply your multiplication skills.
Please complete this activity and, if you like, you could upload your work to the blog
or pop it in your work folder. We can keep the blog private so that you cannot see
each other’s work or give away the answers.
Have a great weekend! from the Year 3 Team
Now over to you: TODAY’S TASK Challenge Friday
Q -How did your times tables knowledge help you check
you had all the combinations?
