Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week beg: 08.06.20
Hi Year 5!
You should have now all been able to access the home learning videos on Seesaw. Please do send us a message if you are having trouble watching the videos and we will try and help.
This week, we’re continuing with the next part of The Tempest, focusing on Resolutions and Farewells! We hope that you are enjoying the story so far. Remember to make sure you watch the videos on ‘The Tempest Online’ website to remind yourself of what has happened.
https://www.primaryshakespearecompany.org/tempest-2020-online
Enjoy and have fun!
Jo, Lucy, Katy and Sharon
Reading activity 1: Read through this week’s text from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and look up any tricky words. Watch Jo’s Activity 1 video to help you.
Reading activity 2: Re-read ‘Resolutions and Farewells’ above and then answer the questions below. Watch Jo’s Activity 2 video to help you.
Reading activity 3: Find and circle each of the words from the list below. Words may appear forwards or backwards, horizontally, vertically or diagonally in the grid.
Reading activity 4: Use your knowledge of this section of the play to complete this tricky crossword.
Reading activity 5:
a. b. c. Take a close look at these three posters for performances of The Tempest.
a. What is similar about the posters? b. What is different? c. If you could choose to go to one of these performances, which
would you choose? Why? d. We would like you to design your own poster for a performance
of The Tempest. Think about which details of the story you think should be included. You can use any medium of your choice e.g. colouring pencils, Seesaw drawing tools etc.
Other reading activities:
● Find a funny place to read a book - it could be up a tree, under the bed or in a den. Take a photo and post it on Seesaw.
● Find ten awesome adjectives in the text you have read and then use them to make a crossword.
● Write down any unfamiliar words from the chapter you have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary or reading around the sentence.
● Read something around the house that isn’t a book e.g. a magazine, recipe book etc.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)
Punctuation activity - Apostrophes in contractions
You can use apostrophes to show that you have omitted (left out) some letters when you are joining words together. For example, you can join the words ‘you’ and ‘are’ together. You + are = you're. The apostrophe takes the place of the removed letters. In this example, the letter a. Sometimes, however, you need to rearrange the letters a bit when you contract the words. For example: will + not = won't. Using contractions like these makes your writing easier to read and more friendly.

Writing: Activity 1: 100 word challenge PLANNING
This is harder than it sounds….
The project’s final writing task is to write the story of The Tempest in just 100 words… YES! You read correctly- just 100 words! How you do this is totally up to you but…
Planning sheet: If you are watching the story tellings from each week to remind you of the story, this might help you to jot down notes.
Activity 2 and 3: 100 word challenge (WRITING)
Upload your finished stories to Seesaw or you can also send them to the Primary Shakespeare Company as they would love to see the great work you have been doing.
You can use the writing template below or create your own.
Activity 4 and 5: Retelling Act 5

● Practise times tables using Times Table Rockstars (your logins are in your homework book). You can also logon to Numbots using your TT Rockstars login details.
● Watch Countdown and try to solve the maths problems just like we do in class. Maybe you could play against one of your family members and see if you can win! https://www.channel4.com/programmes/countdown/episode-guide
Activity 1: Multiplying fractions and simplifying Helpful hint: To multiply fractions, you need to multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Remember the top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator.
You can simplify a fraction if the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) can both be divided by the same number. For example: 2/12 can be simplified to ⅙ (one over six) because both the numbers are divisible by 2. 2 goes into 2 once and 2 goes into 12 six times.
Watch Katy’s Activity 1 video on Seesaw to help you.
Task: Let’s play chess! The object of chess is to capture the king. That, at the simplest level, is the symbolic significance of Prospero revealing Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess in the final scene. Prospero has caught the king—Alonso—and reprimanded him for his treachery. For each section of the chess board you need to work out the fractions, multiply and simplify. E.g. If there are 3 pieces on a chess board and 9 squares then the fraction is 3/9. Not all of the fractions can be simplified but have a go at finding the ones that can be.
For example:
Have a go at these:
Activity 2: Solve problems involving converting between units of times
Watch Katy’s Activity 2 video on Seesaw to help you.
The Tempest is showing as a complete performance. You will need the information above to help answer the questions. You may find the ‘Time Conversion Chart’ useful to help you.
Questions: 1. How many minutes long is the whole play?
2. How many seconds long is the whole play?
3. How many seconds does an interval last for?
4. How many minutes will the actors perform for on Saturday 23rd May?
5. How many hours will the actors perform for on Saturday 23rd May?
6. How many seconds will the actors perform for on Saturday 23rd May?
7. How many days is The Tempest running for altogether? (there are 31 days in
May but remember, no performance on Sundays!)
8. How many weeks is The Tempest running for altogether?
9. How many hours is The Tempest running for altogether?
10. Write 2 word problems of your own based on the “Performance Details’
Activity 3: Think about all the maths you’ve done as part of this project; multiplication, division, fractions, time, measurement, coordinates. directions, addition, subtraction, Roman numerals! Your task is to now create your own set of maths problems, maths challenge or maths game for your family to attempt or play! It can be on any area of maths but MUST be inspired by The Tempest. Below are some images to help you. The rest is up to you….
Activity 4 - Problem solving with measurement
Watch Katy’s Activity 4 video in the Home Learning area on Seesaw to help you to get started.
Helpful Tip: Don’t forget to convert the measurements (e.g. weight, distance) to the same units of measure (g, kg, m, km). Here are some useful conversions to remind you:
1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)
1 kilometre (km) = 1000 metres (m)
£1 = 100 pence
Activity 5 - Let’s reason and problem solve - Mathematics is a creative subject. It involves spotting patterns, making connections, and finding new ways of looking at things. Creative mathematicians play with ideas, draw pictures, have the courage to experiment and ask good questions.
The problem this week is called: Reach 100
Getting started: Simply writing out the numbers 1−9 along the top of your paper can be a great help.
Imagine arranging your four two-digit numbers in columns to do the addition sum, like this:
52 19 51 29
If the total has to be 100, think about how the four digits you choose could add to make the 0 in the units column, then look at the tens column.
Science:
Key vocabulary Earth, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, spherical, solar system, rotates, star, orbit, planets
Can you remember the order of the planets in the solar system? Write your own mnemonic by using the first letter of each planet name to help you remember. See the example below: My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Easy (Earth) Method (Mars) Just (Jupiter) Speeds (Saturn) Up (Uranus) Nothing (Neptune). M V E M J S U N Now write it out as a sentence.
Carry out some research to answer the first two questions you wrote in the stars last week. Post a video bulletin on Seesaw telling us what you have found out.
Watch: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zvfbgwx
Use the information in the video to answer the questions below:
1) What is the name of the ‘invisible line’ Earth spins
on?
2) What causes day and night
3) Why do we see the moon at night?
4) Can you fill in the blanks?
5) What does ‘orbit’ mean?
There is always space exploration happening. P.E.
Our focus for PE this summer term is athletics and cricket. This week we will be thinking about athletics and long distance Activity: Challenge yourself to run a longer distance. Can you run for 10 minutes without stopping? Think about your pace, you won’t be able to sprint for that amount of time but you can definitely run at a steady pace. Try increasing the time to 15 or even 20 minutes. Maybe you could join a family member for a run around the park or your local area. How far can you get in 10, 15 or 20 minutes? Other ideas:

Using the link above, take notes about The Golden Hinde Ship, which was the most famous vessel to sail during the Elizabethan times. Present your findings as a report. You could write about it or make a short video if you prefer. Don’t forget to post it on Seesaw for us to enjoy!
Happy sailing!
PSHE: Laughter
This week in the story we have been reading on Seesaw, Wonder, August and his friend get a fit of the giggles and can’t stop laughing! Laughter is one of the many ways we show our feelings of care, kindness and friendship towards others.
When have you laughed with friends and family and had really good fun?
Even smiling and giggling can make us feel brighter if we are a bit down or just want to cheer up a friend or family member.
If you want you could make a poster to put up in your house to remind yourself to smile and laugh (at the appropriate time, of course!) to help keep everyone cheerful!
Keep smiling and laughing, Year 5!!
