What a busy term!

- Audrey Hepburn-
Students are working towards sharing their learning with you in Week 9. Notes will be sent home over the next week or so (as soon as all times have been allocated) with your allocated time. Please make
every effort to be punctual so that we are able to promptly stick to our time table for the evening.
Student LED conferences are a time for you as a family to share in your child’s learning together. Below are some suggestions for you to make this an effective and positive sharing time for both
yourself and your child.
Be positive - Share with your child the things that you have enjoyed and are proud of.
Listen - Give your child every opportunity to explain the tasks and their learning, use the prompts
suggested by the teacher to help prompt this.
Encourage your child to set future learning goals (Ask your child - Tell me one thing you could
do to improve this task further?)

Event Management
I was impressed with the final assessment task undertaken by students for our Events Unit. Students demonstrated that they were able to work cooperatively to plan and organise an event for a specific purpose. They worked hard to communicate and make the event relevant and
interesting for their allocated age group. One group showed a high level of responsibility in planning by communicating their information in the form of
a puppet play.
Our Bali Kite Festival afternoon was an all round success with many students receiving positive feedback from the classes they worked
with.
Expressions Unit
What makes you laugh, cry or afraid? What techniques are best for gaining specific responses? What is your perspective on that piece? How could you evoke a
particular response in others?
These are questions students have been exploring in their
current Unit of Inquiry.
Unit of Inquiry
This term the Year 4/5 students have been working with Miss Fuss’ Year 2/3 class. We have used this time as a hands on creative thinking time. Each week students have been challenged to use certain materials or limited materials to design/plan, manipulate materials and construct something unique. It has been great to see students working cooperatively with their buddy and thinking outside the square to create some thoughtful and unique creations. You may have even seen some of
them in or on the lockers outside the Year 2/3 and 4/5 classrooms.
Buddy Class - Creative Thinking
We have focussed on mental health and wellbeing this term. Topics covered have included assessing the strengths of different emotions and exploring how and why different situations lead to varying degrees of emotional responses in individuals. We have also discussed and trialled a range of coping strategies designed to help us deal with strong emotional responses (such as breathing, counting, going for a walk etc). Our current topic is centred around problem solving and some methods we can use to identify and rate possible solutions. The examples used are scenarios that are relevant to the students
and examples that they may be required to deal with at school, at home or in other social situations.
As part of our Unit of Inquiry students have been trying to create visual images and evoke certain responses using poetry. Students have enjoyed investigating and writing Haiku, Similes and Imagery Poems. Some are on display in the corridor outside the classroom. I have been very pleased with the
way in which students have challenged themselves to use more descriptive vocabulary.

Literacy
Measurement has been a major focus this term, with students this week investigating perimeter and area. Students have been reflecting on similarities and differences between the two. They discovered that although the perimeter of a square or rectangle can be the same as another, the area may be different. They then investigated and problem solved the biggest possible garden area Mrs Burns
could have at her house using a square or rectangle shape with only my 30 m of fencing material.
