2019 Salt Team Announced

Gleneagles Secondary College seeks to ensure that our students are able to develop and utilise their leadership potential and contribute to the life of the College. Recently, students applied for leadership roles and membership of the Students Activities and Leadership Team (SALT).

For leadership positions, students not only had to submit a written application and references, they also had to attend an interview. Each interview panel had students and staff and the College Captains position also had a community representative, Ms Amanda Stapleton, the Mayor of the City of Casey.

I would like to congratulate all students who applied for having the courage and determination to apply. The panel chairs all commented on the high quality of the field and the difficulty of making the final decisions. None the less the panels have selected the following students to be leaders of the College in 2019.

Early in 2019, there will be a process to select the House Captains and Deputy House Captains. Hopefully, lots of students will be inspired to apply for these roles. Once selected, these students will also join the SALT team.

Casey Tech Excursion

On Wednesday 12 December, 34 year 8 students visited Casey Tech School. Casey Tech School is a brand new facility located in Berwick that aims to deliver innovative and real-world education programs in partnership with local industries, helping to prepare students for the jobs of the future. Their programs emphasise the vital enterprise of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) skills needed for the 21st century.

Students could choose between 3 different activities for the day. Activities included: Making F1 more sustainable, Biomedical technology – Freeing Alzheimer’s and creating virtual artwork through VR equipment. Each group were given a problem that in small groups they needed to create a prototype to solve that particular problem.

VIRTUAL ART

“Today 6 students from Gleneagles got to experience an amazing opportunity. During our time at Casey Tech School we got to use a virtual reality set to create a virtual 3D artwork which needed to include the following: an animal, a season, weather, an impossible structure (something that defies gravity), and audio brush (brush strokes which react to music). The artwork we created was a Christmas enchanted snowy summer. It consisted of an enchanted Christmas tree which was hanging from the sky, a swing attached to the tree with a snow man hanging which doesn’t melt in the warm weather, a polar bear, and other plants and small animals. Our work was saved within a video which was aimed

at children in hospital to view.” – Aleksia Milic 8C

FORMULA 1

“In the activity of ‘How can we improve the sustainability of a F1 racing car’ we researched a bit about F1 racing cars and sketched some ideas of the wings at the front and back of the car to make them more energy efficient by reducing drag. After we have done that we went to another room where we used the computers with the special designing app called CAD. We used our sketches to design the car in the digital world and get our final idea. The program CAD made a video of how the aerodynamics were working with the new wings we designed. We then modelled a small version of the F1 racing car using plasticine. After we have finished everything we presented the small version and video to our group and talked about why we have chosen to make the wings and shape of the car as it was shown on CAD and

model.”- Milos Karna 8C

FREEING ALZHEIMER’S

“Our group participated in the ‘Freeing Alzheimer’s’ activity provided by Casey Tech School where we learnt about how Alzheimer’s affects the mobility of a person and their thought process. It also affects the way in which they hear and see things. Throughout the course of the day, we worked in small groups using a computer programming system called ‘Hummingbird’ to try and figure out a product that could be used to help the patient or the carer. We had to use the wires and motors in the kit to try and figure out a product which we then had to present to the group in the form of a ‘Shark Tank’ presentation. There were some really outstanding and amazing ideas that were put forward by this group of students such as a medicine bottle that indicated the amount of pills in the bottle which was also made to give the patient medicine at the right time and it had a safety lock so that it wouldn’t open at other times. This activity was very interesting and we all learnt a lot of information about how we can change the future of Alzheimer

patients and carers.” - Emily Kuok 8E

Year 8 camp

In week 7 year 8 camp took place at Alexandra Adventure Resort. Students in 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, 8F and 8G attended camp from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 November, while remaining groups attended from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 November.

All groups completed a number of activities during their stay at the resort, which included raft-building, canoeing, high ropes course, low ropes course, Leap of Faith, rock-climbing, orienteering or archery. Some activities were focused on team-building, requiring group members to discuss strategies for completing or overcoming different obstacles. Activities such as high ropes, Leap of Faith, and rock-climbing, were a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves, show support for others and achieve new personal goals. Teachers and camp staff were very impressed by the resilience, enthusiasm and persistence demonstrated by students on camp, not only during activities but also in free time and when completing group duties. Despite the second group receiving a large amount of November’s rainfall, the students persisted and completed their activities in rain and even hail!

In the evenings, everyone had the opportunity to spend time together as a large group. On the first night, teachers and students gathered around the campfire and were shown the proper way to make a s’more by Miss Turner. Students developed the s’more-making technique very quickly and were able to demonstrate their skills in preparing a few for the teachers! On the second night, the group had a movie night in the large hall followed by hot chocolate in the dining room.

The camp was a great success, with many students completing activities they had not done before or achieving new personal goals. Thank you to the amazing teachers who came on camp and helped the students have a very memorable camp experience: Tim Pearson, Bethanie Cooper, Layla Hayes, Cherrin Morrissey, Verna Randone, Simon Martin, Samuel Clarke, Lyndal Scolyer, Candice Russell and Barbara Hammond.

“My favourite part about camp was meeting new people and getting to know them even though I have already spent more than a year at this school. One of my other favourite parts was when we had free time and me and my friends went to the basketball court and enjoyed the time playing with all the equipment like the soccer balls, hula hoops and the rugby ball which was fun.” ~Anonymous student

SOUL BAND & SUMMER JUNIOR CONCERTS

What an end to a fantastic year in the Music department. Term four has provided students with several performance opportunities to show their many talents. We have been lucky to have a summer filled with a singing concert, Soul Band Lunch Concert and the Summer Junior Concert most recently on Monday 10th December. Congratulations to all

students who performed at the concert as for many it was their first performance in front of family and friends. The audience were treated to many genres of music with the concert beginning and ending with the Junior Band and a variety of woodwind ensembles and solo items by the woodwind, brass and piano students. Congratulations on the progress made over the year and to a very musical future. Many thanks to the instrumental staff who have supported the students with their lessons and band rehearsals throughout the year and a very special thank you to parents and families for supporting and encouraging their child’s musical journey. Looking forward to seeing you all again in 2019.

STRINGS FESTIVAL

On Thursday 6 December, the strings ensemble made their way to Bendigo with Ms. Sutcliffe and Mrs Horvat with an early 8.00am departure. The Gleneagles students joined the Bendigo Secondary College string ensemble who were rehearsing for a music festival. The ensemble consisted of students from local high schools who come together for the summer music festival. The string ensemble rehearsed several pieces which culminated in a performance with violins, violas, cellos and double basses under the guidance of Mr. Maclean. Despite the traffic and 7.00pm arrival home it was a wonderful experience to be able to perform with a variety of stringed instruments and the students enjoyed their day.

Year 9 Technology Display

The year 9 students worked very hard during Semester 2 to create a piece of sculpture out of recycled materials, wood and metal, they had the freedom to choose their own concept and theme using the design process in the technology room. They also worked to create stained glass to be a piece of glass art that can be used to reflect lights and colours.
