Advice and information

• The homeworks are organised by topic, and focus on practising exam style answers – this will help you to consolidate knowledge, and will highlight areas that need more revision!

• There is one set of questions that everyone must complete each week – we have then included an extra set of practice questions for each topic for you to complete as part of your independent revision. Obviously, the more questions you complete in preparation, the better!

• Remember we have produced exam advice PowerPoints for each paper which are in the folders section of the year 11 revision group– use these every week to make sure you are revising technique as well as content!

• Teachers will also be happy to mark practice answers for you when you bring them to class with you

Week 8 – Interpretations of Appeasement Question 3: Study Interpretation A. Do you think this is a fair comment on Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement?

Interpretation A: Historian Donald Cameron Watt in 1991

“The personality of Chamberlain is central to the discussion of Appeasement. He had a rather inflated sense of his own judgement and abilities and was unwilling to listen to anyone but himself. It could be said that saw himself acting in the name of God or history. This earned him the disapproval of his people and historians.”

Question 4: Study Interpretation B. Explain why not all historians and commentators have agreed with this interpretation. (20 + 5 SPAG)

Interpretation B: British historian Zara Steiner writing in 2011

“The leaders of the democratic states assumed that all those playing the game shared and accepted certain essential principles. All should, and hence would, agree that peace was preferable to war and that negotiation was more productive than fighting. Theseviews were hardly appropriate for dealing with the Nazis, the Fascists, or the militarist Japanese leadership. Men like Chamberlain and Daladier, as well as their foreign ministers, because of their personalities, upbringing, education, and beliefs barely understood a leader like Hitler. They, like so many others of the old élites, belonged to a world where statesmen made sensible choices, where rules and conventions were observed, and where men avoided bluff and reckless behaviour. The cataclysm of 1914–1918 had left the French and British leaders with the visceral horror of another war. Hitler suffered no such concerns.”

historians: Cato

1948-1960s ‘The appeasers misjudged Hitler’Historians including Churchill thought intentions appeasers were good, but

they made a huge miscalculation.

1960s-1990s ‘Rehabilitating Chamberlain’Historians such as Dilks, Cameron-Watt and Taylor said Chamberlain did

the best he could in an impossible situation

WEEK 1 –INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS 1918-1939EXAM QUESTIONS.

1. Outline the attempts made by the League of Nations to settle international disputes in the 1920s. (5)

2. Explain why attempts at international disarmament failed in the 1920s. (10)

3. Study Interpretation A:

The settlement at Munich was a triumph for British policy, which had worked precisely to this end; not a triumph for Hitler, who had started with no such clear intention. Nor was it merely a triumph for selfish or cynical British statesmen, indifferent to the fate of far off peoples or calculating that Hitler might be launched into war against Soviet Russia. It was a triumph for all that was best and most enlightened in British life; a triumph for those who had preached equal justice between peoples; a triumph for those who had courageously denounced the harshness and short sightedness of Versailles.

An extract from ‘The Origins of the Second World War’ by A.J.P. Taylor published in 1961.

Explain why not all historians and commentators have agreed with the interpretation. Use other interpretations and your knowledge to support your answer. (20 + 5 SPAG)
