PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT MEETINGSAs we move to the end of term three parents will be aware that an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers is here. Parent/Teacher/Student meetings will be held on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd of September. Our teachers are very keen to develop a positive relationships and communication with parents. These meetings are a great opportunity to discuss areas of strength and areas for improvement to support your child’s learning development.

WINTER WEATHERTerm three seems to have been very long and chilly with a large number of students and staff suffering from flu and colds. Thankfully, Gippslanders are a resilient bunch and we have still seen strong academic progress and many examples of our students being involved in community activities.

SRC FREE DRESS DAYThe SRC ran a free dress day in Thursday 31st August to raise funds for Headspace. It was great to see students and staff enjoying the lunchtime activities and promoting the message of respect, diversity, inclusion and tolerance.

YEAR 11 FORMALIt was a pleasure to join the Year 11 students at their Formal on 1st September. Students dressed to impress and everyone enjoyed dinner and good company. Many teachers made comments about the very positive spirit of the evening, the great dancing and the hard work of the student committee. This all made for a memorable evening with friends and teachers.

SYNERGY BREAKFASTOur College Captains attended the Synergy Breakfast at Trafalgar High School on 24th August and shared their Leadership experience with student leaders from other Baw Baw secondary colleges.

VCE/VCALOur Year 12s are now in the last stage of their studies in both VCE and VCAL. Next Term VCAL students will be signing off their competencies and VCE students will be preparing for exams. The September holidays are an opportunity to update study timetables and make a start on exam preparation. We are providing exam practice for all Unit 3 & 4 VCE students on the 26th and 27th September. I hope all students will attend as they will benefit from the experience and will receive valuable feedback from their teachers.

Last year the Year 12 students worked with the Year 12 Learning Culture Team to change the way we mark the end of their final classes. They set the bar high by creating a Celebration Day which displayed our College values of Respect and Community with all students having fun. The Year 12 students and the College received praise from other schools and thanks from parents and the community. We are working together to make our 2017 Celebration Day a safe, successful and enjoyable event for the Class of 2017 and the whole college.

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT MEETINGS

Drouin Secondary College will be conducting Parent / Teacher / Student Meetings on:

Thursday 21st September 4:15pm to 9pm and

Friday 22nd September 9am to 12pm

During the interview sessions the College does provide a crèche for young children to be looked after while you are meeting with teachers.

There are two possible ways of booking times to see teachers:

1. Book electronically by:

• Logging on to the Sentral parent portal: https://sentral.drouinsc.vic.edu.au/portal/login

• Once you are inside the parent portal, click on the “Parent Teacher Student Meetings” link which is across the top of the page or under the “Interviews” button.

• Select date and click times suitable for you.

2. Ring our General Office and book your preferred times on 5625 1002.

The College has a priority to improve learning outcomes for all students in Years 7-12. This priority will not be achieved unless teachers, students and parents are working together. One way you can support the College in fulfilling this priority and more importantly support your child is to make sure you attend the Parent / Teacher / Student Meetings.

VCE STUDENTS

It is expected that all VCE students will make appointments to have interviews with their teachers. This interview time is critical to obtain individual feedback, discuss problem areas and strategies for improvement. Students will also get the opportunity to discuss issues of concern.

If you have queries please feel free to contact the College on 5625 1002.

The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is coming to a close. The last day to get stickers when you are shopping at Woolworths is Tuesday 19th September. We then need to collect your sticker sheets as soon as possible so we can order some new educational resources for our school

Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers into the Collection Box located near the student window at the front office.

The Year 8 Hands on Learning team will be collating all the stickers so they can be redeemed for some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science, Art, Sport and for our library.

If you’d like to know more visit www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn.

Thank you for your support.

YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

On Thursday 31st August, 52 year 9 students travelled to Phillip Island to explore how the Summerland Peninsula has been used by people and preserved by people over time. Students explored Cape Woolamai, the Penguin Parade, Seal Rocks, and Shelley Beach where they participated in an Emu-bob to clean the beach of litter. Mrs Walker was our guide for the day and the students and Miss Brooker would like to thank her and Casey for helping us on the day.

Year 11/12 OES Snow CampOn Sunday 20th August, staff and students met bright and early to start their journey to Mt Hotham for a 3 day Outdoor and Environmental Studies camp. With a quick stop over in Bairnsdale for a snack, we arrived at Mt Hotham by 12:30pm ready for lunch in the lodge. The Year 11 students were straight into their studies with an environmental talk for the afternoon while the Year 12s headed out for a quick lesson at the Big D. A delicious meal of lasagne and salad cooked by the VET Hospitality students was exactly what was needed after a couple of hours on the slopes.

Monday morning brought snowfall and true alpine weather. All 47 students headed up to Hotham Central bright and early for ski/snowboard lessons. The students learnt many new skills and had a lot of fun working together with their friends. The Year 12s then headed inside for their environmental talk for the afternoon while the Year 11s were out. Another delicious meal of homemade curries and naan bread for dinner brought about a great end to the day. Year 11s finished the night off with a climate change DVD and the Year 12s played Quizlet Live and Kahoot to get a bit of study in before bed.

Tuesday morning was a blue bird day (no thermals required). Students headed to their 9am lesson to build on their new skills. After lessons there were many students that headed to the Big-D while a small group continued on to the Village Loops. A more advanced group headed over to the Orchard. Students and staff alike had a great time and learnt a lot about the Alpine environment at Mt Hotham.

We would like to thanks Mr Axford, Mrs Walker, Tom, Scott, Emily and Shaun for all of their help on the camp. Without them, it would not have been possible.

Year 12 OES Phillip IslandOur final trip brought gorgeous weather! We had a big day planned and we had to fit it all in for our last case study for our exam. Our first stop was Cape Woolamai to learn about the Mutton Birds. We then headed out to Churchill Island to learn about the European history of the island. Students ran around taking photos of different artefacts and writing down useful information. We then headed straight to the penguin parade to listen to a ranger talk to us about ecotourism and the effect this has on the natural environment. We learnt a lot about the history of the park and where they plan to go in the future. After this, there was a quick stop at the Koala Conservation Reserve to learn about the breeding program that they have at Phillip Island.

Once again back on the bus for a quick dinner of pizza in Cowes, then straight back out to the penguin parade to watch the penguins come in and witness all of the management strategies that Phillip Island Nature Parks (PINP) have put into place over the last 30 years. We got home close to 8:30pm. A very big day but students learnt so much and got to witness firsthand the ecotourism and management strategies of PINP. A very big thankyou to Mrs Walker. Your wealth of knowledge knows no boundaries and the students and I thank you very much. Year 12 Outdoor Ed students, you are an amazing bunch of humans that I have had the privilege to teach and show so many environmental activities to over the last 2 years. Thank you.

Year 9/10 JapaneseOn 30th August 2017, the Year 9/10 Japanese class went on an excursion to Melbourne to have lunch at Hibachi Japanese Grill. The students had been studying how to describe Japanese food and practicing phrases for ordering food. Students were able to try a variety of Japanese foods such as eel, vegetable tempura, miso soup, sushi, sashimi and tonkatsu as well as practice their speaking by ordering food in Japanese. Overall, the students commented that they had a great day and were able to go out of their comfort zones and try some strange but delicious food.

Also, while on the excursion, students were able to go to Daiso, which is a store that specialises in Japanese food, confectionary, stationery, souvenirs and household items.

DSC AGRICULTUREDrouin SC’s Agriculture classes have the opportunity to display four of their layer chickens at the Melbourne Show.

They will be on display the whole time (23 September to 3 October) and the chickens themselves and their eggs will be judged against other Victorian schools.

The students have put in a huge effort collecting data and making a very professional poster for display.

So if you are going to the show in the holidays, please pop into The Weekly Times Livestock Pavilion and have a look at Drouin’s wonderful chickens!

TEXTS STAGED FOR ENGLISH STUDENTSYear 12 English students were impressed by the performance of The Crucible with Year of Wonders by the Complete Works Theatre Company. The comparison of these texts forms a major component of the assessment for Unit 4. The performance was energetic and insightful, with the structure centred around themes relevant to both texts.

Comments from the students included:

“Reading it is through one set of eyes. The performance gave us a different view.”

“I like how they chose specific events in each text. It was good to have the nuggets we could take away from it. It was good to see how a play could be different from a book.”

“I liked how they explained the scenes before and after. “

“I liked the visualization – that really helped. The courtroom was really effective.”

“I can remember the quotes they used and am now using them in my writing.”

Year 9 French Snail FarmOn Wednesday the 6th of September, the Year 9 French class set off on a journey to Mirboo North to try some snails at Cafe Escargot. We have been learning about French foods this semester so we were intrigued to try a little bit of French culture.

We arrived at the snail farm and, despite the cold weather, we were pretty excited. After taking our seats and watching a short clip about how the snails are farmed, we were served a deep fried snail. After we got over the fact that it was a snail we were about to eat, we ate them and really enjoyed them. They were surprisingly delicious, dipped in a garlic aioli.

Next we were served a main meal of either meatballs, arancini or slow-cooked beef pie with chips and salad. All options were amazing! For dessert, we had the most amazing French butter apple cake, served with a dollop of cream.

Afterwards, Vincenza (the business owner, cook and snail farmer) gave us a talk about how the snails were grown, prepared and cooked. Finally, we got to see the snails before we hopped on the bus and headed back to school.

Overall, it was an amazing day and a great opportunity to try a snail.

community projects over the last 8 weeks. They have worked with organisations and stakeholders outside of the school community. This project has been a major assessment for their VCAL certificate. Students have worked with many different organisations on many different projects:

• Ice Meltdown Project – students organised a Bunnings BBQ to raise funds;

• Beanies for Premmies – students knitted beanies for premmie babies for the Casey Hospital;

• Volunteering at Amberlea – students volunteered their time to work with the elderly;

• Gift Drive – students worked with the Salvation Army to get Christmas gifts for students in need;

• Skate Park clean up – students worked with the Baw Baw Shire to clean up the Drouin Skate Park;

• Family Violence presentation – students worked with Dean Waddell from Warragul Police Station to raise awareness of Family Violence;

• VCAL classroom clean-up – students worked with the Principals and school council to paint and decorate the year 11 VCAL classrooms.

Well done to all students involved. You have shown great community spirit and worked extremely hard to build relationships in the community.

Book of the MonthYou Don't Even Know - Sue LawsonLoss, Forgiveness, Family Issues, Self Acceptance, Grief.

You Don’t Even Know is about Alex Hudson, a regular student who loves water polo, is working a part-time job and is overall a very decent kid. But his home life is a little more complicated. Fight after fight with his father and brother, Ethan, is taking a toll on the entire family and it only seems like it’s getting worse.

The book starts off with Alex having just been taken to hospital but he doesn't remember what happened. His life had been turned upside down after a major unexpected event and it doesn't seem as if things are going to get better, the whole theme and plot of the story is gripping. It takes the reader on a journey, the one that is Alex’s life, but soon twists into a mystery where the reader is grasping to try and fit the pieces of the puzzle together to get a complete picture of what really took place.

This novel was touching and gripping, I’ll admit I cried when everything was pieced together. Characters felt relatable, like your own family or friends were talking to you instead of you reading about strangers. Miss Taylor

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the area of Cybersafety and young people. She is a mother of three and was the first Victorian Police Officer appointed to a position involving Cybersafety and young

people. She took her first report of cyberbullying in 1994 and since then she has

conducted extensive research and has completed advanced training in this area in both the USA and UK and is a sought after

presenter and advisor to Schools, elite sporting bodies such as the AFL, GPs, and

both State and Federal Governments. She has authored resources for the Victorian DET, writes and reviews school policy, provides

crisis management/advice to schools and is afforded ‘expert’ status on the Safer Internet Programme Data Base. She is also a member of the Australian Government's Cybersafety working group and a published author. Her book 'Sexts Texts & Selfies' is the definitive parents' guide to helping their children stay

safe online.

.

What Susan doesn’t know about Cybersafety is not worth knowing! She is absolutely brilliant and her presentations are dynamic and entertaining. She has the unique ability to connect with each audience from young people to adults. (Dr Michael Carr-Gregg Adolescent Psychologist)

Growing up Online: An informative & entertaining session for parents and carers is delivered with Susan's famous 'no nonsense' approach & will cover the positive benefits of technology as well as what parents need to be aware of:

What are kids doing online – The popular social networking sites and apps such as KiK, Musical.ly and Instagram & Yellow. What they are, what are the legal ages to use them & why these rules should be obeyed? The difference between an 'online friend' and a 'stranger'.

Online Grooming – What is it and when/how does it occur? What are the warning signs & what to do if you suspect this is happening to your child.

Cyberbullying - What it is, where it happens, what it looks like, how to prevent and what to do if it occurs. Also the legal consequences and the possible criminal charges.

‘Sexting’ – the taking and sending of explicit images...what are the REAL consequences. (Primary school kids too).

Potential dangers and safety tips – how to assist the children in your care to stay safe online via parental controls and restriction passcodes

Problematic Internet use and gaming issues.

Office of the eSafety Commissioner – Role, Resources & Reporting. Be confident in setting rules and boundaries around Internet use in the home. It's OK to say NO!

The session will conclude with time for Questions.

NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS

COUNTRY BUS TRAVELCountry buses (this does not include in town bus services) are provided as a free service to eligible students for the sole purpose of providing transport between home and school. While transport to and from other locations may have been allowed in the past, this situation has become unmanageable and unsafe. The rules governing School Buses are clear in this regard.

Transport such as:

• to the home of another student,

• to after school employment,

• to sporting and other social events, or

• to another person’s home for the purpose of child minding

are all regarded as private in nature and therefore the responsibility of the parents and students concerned.

Casual travel in the past has caused overcrowding on some buses which creates serious concerns with respect to the safety. This year most buses are already running to their capacity so seating is not available.

As a result of these issues, and in accord with Department of Education and Training and Department of Infrastructure guidelines, no bus passes will be issued for any reason other than to facilitate short term emergency housing.

PLEASE NOTE: No bus pass will be issued for any other purpose.

We deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause but we need to follow the guidelines set out by the Department of Education and Training closely as possible, which are created in the best interests of safety for all students.
