Year 11-12 English Curriculum Pacing Guide Narrative One term = 8 weeks First Term Grammar Focus Punctuation in all forms (WC 21: pgs 647-679) Nouns and Verbs (WC 15: pgs 521-544) Agreement and Commonly Confused Words(WC 16: pgs 545-554 The focus of the students’ learning should be based on the CIPP and CCCS standards for the high school grades. Notice that the standards are listed in a separate column on the pacing guide. The grammar terms focus should be addressed thoroughly while teaching the above units. Supplementary materials are available via Course Components from Writer’s Choice Program. Use these to help teach the standards and terms and to plan appropriate lessons that will engage students in the learning process. Writing Focus The writing for this term should revolve around narrative/ story telling writing techniques. Students should also spend some time working with timed writing and preparing for timed writing tests (SAT). Give them sample prompts (these can easily be found on the internet) to work with and give them some tips on organizing their ideas quickly (they are given scratch paper). You can spend this quarter practicing narrative writing prompts in addition to the following writing assignments from Glencoe Writer’s Choice Grammar and Composition (WC). Unit 4 Narrative Writing ( WC pgs. 159-200) Characters in Narratives Structuring a long Narrative Theme in Narrative Narrative Writing Project Students should write a compare and contrast essay, an analysis of a character from a story, and an analysis of a plot.
