Year 1 Maths – Week beginning Monday 6th July
This week’s maths task is slightly different from the previous weeks. I have not
included individual/daily lesson plans as it is a problem-solving project which
will take several days to complete. I have however included a separate place
value lesson as this will be something I will be doing with different children
throughout the week in class. With the place value activities pick and choose
which areas you want your child to focus on as well as the problem-solving
project.
Starter activities:
Play some place value number games on IWB – shark numbers: How do we
know it’s that number? How many tens? How many ones? What is one more?
What is one less?

Problem solving project: (2 differentiated plans to follow)
This week’s project is to design and create your own zoo!
You will need squared paper to complete this task and I would suggest A3 size
or stick several pieces of A4 together.
Below you will see the zoo plans in which you will have to follow in order to
correctly draw the different area sizes of buildings. You will have to use your
maths knowledge to work out how many squares the different pens, buildings
and cages will need to be. Once you have worked out the size you will need to
colour each building in as well as label it, try to make buildings/pens/cages a
‘block’ rather than long areas.
Here are some examples:
1.
Plan 1
My Zoo
Your task is to create your very own zoo!
Your zoo must have the following items.
Required items-
Shop Half of 20. ________ squares
Cafe 6 + 3 + 7 = ________ squares
Toilet 8 squares
You can have as many of these as you like.
Path 1 square
You can have as many of these as you like.
You can choose which animals you would like in your zoo.
Lion Double 6.
________________ squares
Elephant
6 squares more than the lions
Seal 3 x 4= ________ squares
Monkey
10 more squares than the seals
Penguin
14 + 6 = __________ squares
Bears
5 squares less than the penguins

Zebra
5 x 5 = ________ squares
Hippos
3 squares less than the zebras

Then take away your age.
_____________ squares
Place value activities:
These activities are focused on place value of number, looking at 10s and 1s,
ordering numbers, counting forwards and backwards from 100. Please pick and
choose which activity needs focusing on with your child.
Please write in different numbers. A separate sheet of dienes area available to
cut and stick.
