• In English we follow the Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics approach to teaching phonics.

• We have introduced a curriculum resource called ‘Wordsmith’ . This resource ensures that we have a consistent approach across the whole of Primary regarding the teaching of reading and writing

Assessment

We have invested in a product called ‘ Classroom Monitor’ to support our teachers in assessing our pupils even more effectively.

This product gives teachers and management the ability to track every child’s progress and generate reports that enable us to quickly identify pupils that are not making expected progress.

This year, Year 1 has developed a ‘transition plan ‘ for pupils moving from our Reception classes to Year 1. The transition period also helps new pupils to settle in and get familiar with HeadStart learning and routines.

This is best practice in schools, and it provides a period for our pupils to make the adjustment from Reception and/or their past school to HeadStart by making them ‘school ready’ for Year 1.

The Lesson Design:

• Homeroom teacher delivers the lesson to the whole class

• Pupils are confident in completing their learning

• Both teachers then work with and assist different groups of pupils throughout the lesson as required

• Homeroom teacher will then complete the plenary with the whole class

In Mathematics our core resource is Power Maths which is modelled on the mastery approach.

Power Maths is a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help children nurture confidence in maths. At the heart of Power Maths is the belief that all children can achieve. It’s built around a child-centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths.

Our Curriculum- Power Maths

• In Year 1 the key focus is establish confidence in number and place value.

• This means pupils having a ‘deep’ understanding of what digits mean in a number, for example:

The number 25 is actually 20 and 5

• Pupils focus very much on concrete representations of number, number facts and addition and subtraction.

• Wordsmith is a first language English teaching resource

• Wordsmith uses class books as a context for teaching English reading, grammar and writing

• Every unit of work begins with a book as a stimulus. These books have been especially chosen as they engage and excite our pupils

• Wordsmith promotes a love of books and reading, and from there writing.

• We have adapted Wordsmith to meet the needs of our HeadStart learners
