MATHS HELP Maths teachers at Yea HS will be running maths help/homework sessions, beginning this term for Years 7 - 12 students. The sessions will be on Thursday each week and run in the hub from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

YEAR 12 NEWS

Year 12 VCE students have two presentations coming

up from Engage Education. These occur on September

9th and October 14th, focusing on motivational strate-

gies and exam preparation/techniques.

Year 12 last day will be Tuesday 18th October. On this

day students will complete their final formal lesson

(English) followed by some fun, assembly, and an ex-

cursion.

The 2016 Valedictory Dinner to celebrate the comple-

tion of secondary schooling for Year 12’s (VCAL &

VCE) will be held at Beaufort Manor in Yea, on Thurs-

day 17th November. More Details to follow.

GVBR SILENT AUCTION To raise money for this year’s GVBR we will

be holding a silent auction for a trailer of

firewood which was kindly been donated by

Stuart McLeish. Please enter your bids

through the office on 5797 2207. The auc-

tion will be drawn on Wednesday the 7th of

September, bids will close at 3.30pm.

Well done to all students who have been

raising money through selling chocolates. It

HUME REGION BADMINTON ROUND ROBIN

COMPETITION

The Yea High School Year 8 Badminton team went to

Wangaratta last week hoping to snare a win. Mitch Temperton,

Ben Charles, Gianluca Laudisio and Josh Vickery-Stewart

played very well. The result were very close. However, we lost

more games than we won.

Ben and Gianluca summed up the day with their comments.

Ben: “It was a tough game with only two wins, but we had some

close games as well.”

Gianluca: “Although we lost most of our games everyone on

our team showed good sportsmanship.”

PRINCIPAL’S TEAM REPORT

School Improvement Work

The driveway and tennis court upgrade is almost finished. The security fencing has been removed but the

final inspections and a tidy up are required before the driveway is open for traffic access.

Subject Selection

Students in Year 11 or Year 12 in 2017 should have submitted an initial subject selection sheets by today.

In the next two to three weeks students will receive a blocked selection sheet with the subjects offered by

the school. Students should consult with their teachers and families to ensure the most suitable subjects to

support their pathway.

Traffic Management

Parents and the school community are reminded of the speed restrictions around the school. The front of

the school has a new parking and pick up area thanks to improvements works undertaken by the Murrind-

indi Shire. This area should be open before the end of Term 3. The next stage of the school improvement

works will be centred on the ART, Wood and Technology area adjacent to the bus circle and car park.

Information on the traffic movement in that area will be made available closer to the start of the work.

Child Safe

The school and school council is currently working to embed new Child Safe standards within the school.

Strategies to embed include:

A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety;

A code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children;

Screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of child

abuse by new and existing personnel;

Processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse;

Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse;

Strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children;

A code of conduct, policy and information will be available in coming weeks and posted on the school web

site.

Sport Day

The next Southern Ranges round robin sport day is on Friday 9th of September. Students in Year 7 to Year

10 are encouraged to participate. VCE classes will be running unless that teacher is coaching a team. VCE

students are expected to be at school.

Interim Reports

In the next two weeks teachers are being asked to prepare Term 3 interim reports. These reports will be

posted out to families and, in the last week of Term 3, there will be opportunities for families to discuss the

report with teachers.

Attendance

As the school has recently moved to full electronic roll marking we have become aware of a few inaccura-

cies. Our Advisors have been talking to students in an effort to reduce the number of unexplained absenc-

es. In the next few weeks each family will receive a letter that will list all of their child’s unexplained absenc-

es in 2016. Space is provided on the letter next to the absence for you to make a comment. Please help the

school by returning this letter as soon as possible so that we can update and improve the accuracy of our

student’s attendance data. It is also important to remind everyone that all absences need to be called

through to the school.

Compass

Hopefully by now most students and parents with smart phones have downloaded the

Compass App. We will soon be opening up Compass to parents. When this happens par-

ents will be sent an instruction brochure that will help you navigate the system. To get

started families should log in to Compass at:

Parents will be issued with their own log in details but in the short term you are able to use your child’s.

When fully operational parents will receive attendance alerts and student coursework and feedback. Pay-

ments and permissions for excursions can be made through the system.

Parents will be able to access many aspects of the curriculum including

assessment and reporting. It is an exciting programme that will make a

positive change to our school. The school will gradually release the vari-

ous aspects of Compass over the next 6 months.

CREATING CONVERSATIONS

On Monday 22 August, Year 10 students are required to attend the Creating Conversations Evening at Yea

High School. All parents are encouraged to attend this informative event.

Creating Conversations is a Health Program that aims to break down the communication barriers between

teenagers and parents when it comes to talking about drugs and alcohol. Parents participate in a series of

activities which are facilitated by the students. Students have been practicing in Health lessons this term.

Activities range from asking parents to put themselves in their child's shoes to ranking harmful situations,

and getting conversations flowing. The evening will also be attended by a local drug and alcohol worker,

police, nurse and ambulance officers who form a panel at the end of the activities so parents can ask ques-

tions whilst students prepare supper.

Student Teachers—Brittany Soutter, Brooke Dibella,

Troy Lores and Caitlin Eccles have been doing their

rounds at Yea High School for the past few weeks. They

have completed a research project looking at student

wellbeing and attendance, especially in relationship to

sports carnival days and the use of technology. The find-

ings from the surveys will be used to support these pro-

grams in 2017. We thank them for their contribution.

SOCIAL SERVICE

Over the past financial year 2015 - 16 the

school donated $576 to support our foster

children Nantinin and Adoniya

from Uganda. Every Tuesday

morning the Form Cap-

tains collect the small change

from their fellow students.

The cup collection amount

has been down recently so

we ask that all students make

a concerted effort to bring in

their change every Tuesday

to support Nantinin and

Adoniya.

STUDENT RESILIENCE SURVEY: STUDENT WELLBEING

This week all students in Years 7-12 have once again been asked to complete the Resilient Youth

Australia Survey. This Resilience Survey collects, collates and presents our students answers to are-

as relating to their levels of Resilience over a three year period. This survey, now in its second year, is

assisting the school in identifying and developing a whole school approach to student wellbeing and

engagement that best meet the needs of our individual students. The survey considers responses by

our students to their Safety Pathway (empowerment, belonging, boundaries and expectations and

adult support), Happy Pathway (positive relationships, hope, healthy mind and healthy body) and Ful-

filling Pathway (educational engagement, social skills, positive identity and values). The findings from

these surveys will be reported to parents in future newsletters.

Also there is 100 ways in 100 days community campaign inspired by the central ranges local learning

and employment network. We want to find 100 ways to help young people transition from school to

TRANSITION

Year 9 Students at the 3D Printing Excursion that occurred on the 8th and 9th of August, at Quan-

tum in Melbourne.

TERTIARY OPEN DAYS AND VTAC COURSE APPLICATION INFORMATION

Open Days are currently happening all over Melbourne and are an excellent way for students to obtain

course information, speak to current students and teachers in areas of interest and to get a general feel

for a place they may wish to study at in the year or two. Course applications are now open on the VTAC

website, students need to register to apply for courses and scholarships. Two information sessions re-

garding course and SEAS application have already been held for Year 12 students, the next session

will take place on Monday 22nd August at lunchtime. Students are encouraged to come along with any

questions they may have regarding the application process.
