Summary Main Entry: Kyle Monroe Yates, Sr. Collection Date Span: 1919-1972 Abstract: Sermons, lectures, and sermon notes of Southern Baptist minister, college, and seminary professor, Kyle Yates. The collection includes sermons and lectures that cover the period of 1919 to 1972, with most of the sermons dated from the 1940s and 1950s. The sermons and lectures cover a wide range of biblical issues, theological subjects, historical topics and moral concerns. Size: 6 linear ft. (14 document boxes) Collection #: AR 684 Biographical Sketch Kyle Monroe Yates, Sr. was born in Apex, North Carolina on February 7, 1895. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College (A.B., 1916; A.M., 1917); Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Th.M., 1920; Th.D., 1922); and the University of Edinburgh (Ph.D., 1932). Ordained in 1916, he served as pastor to several churches in North Carolina and Kentucky, 1917-1928; Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, 1942-1946; and Second Church in Houston, Texas, 1946-1956. Yates was professor of Old Testament at Southern Seminary, 1922-1942; distinguished professor at Baylor University, 1956-1971; second vice-president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1955. He was a prolific writer and authored numerous books, mostly related to Old Testament studies. Among his best remembered books were: The Essentials of Biblical Hebrew (1938), Preaching from the Prophets (1942), Preaching from the Psalms (1948), Studies in Psalms (1953), Preaching from Great Bible Chapters (1957), and Preaching from John’s Gospel (1964). He married Margaret Webb Sharp, August 24, 1922. He died February 15, 1975 in Waco, Texas. Scope and Content Note The Kyle Yates Collection is divided into three series: I. Class Notes; II. Sermons and Lectures; III. Subject Files. Each series is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. I. Class notes. The lecture notes cover a wide range of topics related to biblical, theological, and historical subjects. These were used during his teaching days at Southern Seminary and Baylor University.

II. Sermons and Lectures. These notes and manuscripts cover a wide range of concerns. The files include typescripts and notes on biblical subjects, moral concerns, theology, history, and everyday Christian living. Many of the sermons and presentations are dated. Most are from the 1940s and 1950s. III. Subject Files. This series includes other material such as clippings, newsletter, booklets, and files related to churches. Arrangement The collection is divided into three series: I. Class Notes; II. Sermons and Lectures; III. Subject Files. Each series is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title.
