Pink Day!
Once again Yass High School joined together for an amazing Pink Day,
with over $6,500 raised for the national Breast Cancer Foundation and
the local Can Assist. This is a wonderful effort from the whole Yass
Community with around half of this being raised through the stall in the
main street, and Berinba Public School also raised a significant amount
with their own Pink Day.
Thank you to Ms Bills for her outstanding organisation, Ms Halley-
Barberis and her Hospitality students, the Community class, our very
own Superhero Jess Dunn and all the students and teachers who
participated in such and enthusiastic, inclusive and caring manner.

Captains Corner
Hi everyone, we hope you’ve all had a great start to Term 4. We have been busy
over the past week filming for our Captain’s Corner intro for assemblies. We can’t
wait to show you all and embarrass ourselves every assembly.
Earlier this week we celebrated Pink Day; it was great to see everyone dressed in
pink. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Miss Bills and her community
classes for organising this event and for everyone digging deep to donate to this
great cause. The day was a huge success!!!!!
Our teacher of the week is Mr. Wilkinson. We would like to thank Mr. Wilkinson for
all his hard work in maintaining the school. He often goes unnoticed, but his work is
very much appreciated by all staff and students. Some of the recent endeavors
include: setting and packing up the exam rooms for Year11 yearly exams and HSC
exams, assisting in moving classrooms, garden maintenance and spending his
holidays at school organising for future projects.
Thank you Mr Wilkinson!
Joke of the week: What did the ground say to the earthquake? You crack me up

SheLeads Conference
Some of YHS finest young female leaders enjoyed the SheLeads conference at the
University of Canberra on Friday 1st November. The girls participated in workshops
on leadership, finding their voice and the empowerment in speaking up for others.
The event was organised by the ACT YCCA.
Zara Vale wins Human Rights Essay writing competition
Zara Vale was awarded 1st prize in the recent Yass
Human Rights Film Festival competition, with a 1000
word essay about Article 20 of the Charter of Human
Rights – The right to peaceful assembly. The essay
centered on the current political situation in Hong
Kong. Zara was praised by the event organisers for
the high quality of the essay, and was rewarded with
$120.
Students are invited to get thinking about their
entries for next year – organisers are calling for a
short film, poem, essay, or short story on the theme
of human rights.

Staff Development Days
Staff at Yass High School have participated in 4 x 3 hour professional learning
Twilight Seminars throughout the year on topics such as:
Quality Teaching Rounds Trauma in Adolescents Faculty Programming for New Syllabi Clickview CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Google Classrooms Literary and Numeracy Progressions ALARM (A Learning And Responding Matrix) Writing in the Middle Audio-visual technology - how to set up and use this at Yass HS PBL (Project Based learning) NESA - Developing Quality Stage 6 Assessments
As a result, teachers are not required to attend the last two Staff Professional
development days at the end of this term (19th and 20th December). The school will
not be operational on these days, although there will be a minimal staff presence in
the front office.
Yass High School - School Spectacular
The students from Yass High who are heading off to Sydney for the School
Spectacular have been working hard learning all the songs, and also raising money
to get themselves there. For some students it will be the first time travelling on trains
and being away from home for such a long time. The chance to perform in such a
professional show, telecast on commercial television, is very special.
The staff and students have been very grateful for the support they have received
from the community in their fundraising efforts. Murrumbateman Mechanical and
Electrical, Clementine Restaurant, Hoyts Belconnen, Yass Valley Council, Aldi,
Woolworths, Trader and Co, Bernadette Collins from the Yass Wellness Centre and
Yass Rotary have all supported us financially. We have run a raffle, and a cake sale
here at school, and next weekend we have a bric-a-brac stall.
We have 24 students going to Spec this year, plus two staff members and we will be
away from Tuesday the 19th of November until Sunday the 24th.

Murrumbateman Field Days
What a marvellous weekend we had out at the Murrumbateman Field Days! After
setting up all our beautiful displays and new banners it was time to open the show
and get people in and looking. We nearly got blown away on Saturday but there
were many hands to keep the tent firmly in place. Not as lucky were some of our
neighbouring tents, but in true Yass High Spirit our students ran to their aid.
Full credit to our great captains and vice captains who led by example in their flashy
blue blazers, welcoming people in
to our display and distributing
flyers and brochures. Some
sneaky handing out of M&Ms also
helped lure in the young ones.
Thanks to our choir students,
plenty of raffle tickets for School
Spectacular were sold out halfway
through Sunday before the big
drawing of the prizes.
Many people commented on our
beautiful displays which included
work from STEM, textiles, metal
work, woodwork and photos of our talented students. We put on a good show and
thank you to all the students and staff involved.

What’s Happening in English
With Term 4 well underway and final assessment tasks looming, students are
working diligently on a variety of English projects. Year 7 have been studying how
ideas can be represented in sophisticated ways in visual texts. Their Visual
Representation tasks are due in Week 4. Year 8 (pictured) have been producing
their animation films. The finished products are due in Week 5.
Year 9 are preparing to write their Anime Film
Study essays, and Year 10 are engaged in a
novel study in preparation for their test.
Both tasks for Years 9 & 10 are due in Week
4.
Year 8 Animation
Year 8 students are currently engaged in a
film making unit whereby they are making a
short stop-motion animation film. In addition
to learning about conveying narrative through
film students are developing vital skills in
group work. The unit started off with students
learning about various film making and
production techniques, before forming groups
and developing stories. Most groups are
currently editing the final products. We
cannot wait to see these fantastic films!

What’s been happening in in Year 8 Textiles?
Year 8 have just finished a rotation and made some awesome cushions. Their brief
was to make a cushion which was inspired by their relationship with the land. They
learn lots of sewing and decorative techniques and to be able to design their own
unique cushion and then make it.
Some inspirations came from the indigenous flag, holidays at the beach, trees,
autumn leaves, rain, clouds, the galaxy and the night sky. Activities done in the
environment were a theme as well such as horse riding, motor bike riding, bull
wrestling and riding in the good old county ute. Students are to be congratulated for
working hard to produce great results.

Albury Show
Last week, Show Team attended Albury for the last show of the year. This is a very
large show with schools competing from both Victoria and New South Wales in the
Cattle Judging and Cattle Parading sections.
While our senior students were unsuccessful in qualifying for next year’s Sydney
Royal Easter Show, Damon Shoard came third in the junior cattle parading
competition on the Friday. On the Saturday, the students had the opportunity to see
how the school's steer, Shakespeare, performed in the Hoof and Hook competition
against cattle from other schools. Shakespeare came fourth in the heavy weight
division with the Hook part of the competition occurring this Tuesday. Once
this competition was over the students then said goodbye to Shakespeare and
headed home.

What’s Happening in Year 10 Textiles
Year 10 Textiles Technology students had an art quilt challenge to design and make
a decorative textile project with the theme of culture. Students researched a culture
and textile techniques particular to that group of people.
Silk painting, indigo dying and hand embroidery were some of the new skills they
learnt. The culture of Japan featured in a number of quilts, where cherry blossoms,
koi fish, street scape of Tokyo, and dragons were motifs.
Students’ family heritage featured in quilts based on Dutch and German aesthetics.
Personal cultures such as life in Australia and horse riding further personalised the
highly individual items. The Year 10 students are to be congratulated on such
wonderful quilts produced with considerable skill.
