For seventy-years Parkway Playhouse has entertained those visiting and living amongst the Appalachian Mountains. Launched as an extension of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now known as UNC-Greensboro) in 1947, Parkway Playhouse seen the comings and goings of thousands of actors, audi-ences, and like any cultural landmark, has contributed to countless memories.

In 1947, Parkway Playhouse li�ed the curtain on a stage that was built onto an old gymnasium. Handcra�ed in old wood, the inside of Park-

way Playhouse feels at once historical and at the same time magical and new. �e seating, stage, and lighting systems re�ect contemporary practices, but the iron chandeliers forged by Daniel Boone IV (the descendant of the famous frontiersman) evoke the rugged majesty of the surrounding mountains.

“�is is not an ordinary theatre” comments Parkway Playhouse’s Artistic Director, Andrew Gall.”It is hard to describe the character of Parkway Playhouse as a space. But it is a place where so much is possible because the atmosphere is so evocative.”

Parkway Playhouse’s Mainstage Series runs from May to October, and this year will feature theatre staples like Steel Magnolias and the musical classic West Side Story. Additionally the theatre will also produce the world premiere of �e Ballad of Frankie Silver; a story based on local history and lore about a famous Appa-lachian murder case.

�e 2016 season includes: Steel Magnolias opening on May 7, �e Ballad of Frankie Silver opening on June 4, Little Shop of Horrors, a sci-� musical comedy spoof, opens on July 2; West Side Story opens on July 30; You Can’t Take it with You opens on August 27; and the 2016 season closes with a stage adaptation of �e Great Gatsby which is set to open on September 24.


�e productions are put together using student, volunteer, and professional talent with lots of oppor-tunities for people of all ages, experience levels, and interests to become involved.

Parkway Playhouse o�ers a year-round program for students between the ages of 4 and 18. Called Parkway Playhouse Junior, students can participate on weekends and and a�er school in classes, camps and workshops that teach acting, singing, dancing, as well as technical and production skills.

Recently Parkway Playhouse has started o�ering improv comedy and has partnered with the Nu-Wray Inn to host interactive murder-mystery dinners that are en-tertaining and leave patrons well fed.

Some are new homeowners and need basic information on the laws that affect their new prop-erty. Others are already informed about our issues and want to voice their support to a local legislator.

One on one interactions ensure our ability to understand the concerns of homeowners across the state. Community events are vital in furthering the education of homeowners as well as the Al-

The Homeowners Alliance re-cently launched a petition in sup-port of three important legislative issues: homeowners insurance re-form, maintaining the mortgage interest deduction, and keeping historic preservation tax credits.

We received thousands of sig-natures from homeowners con-cerned about these three issues. The amount of support we re-ceived on this petition proves that these issues are important to homeowners across the state.
