14/12/16 Term 4 Week 10 Yamba Public School RESPECT: LEARN IT, EARN IT, SHOW IT. Dear Parents, The year is drawing to a close and the days are flying by. What a fantastic week last week, with the presentation assemblies and year 6 farewell. The year 6 students certainly have grown and matured this year. They all looked fabulous on their special night. I’m sure that sharing the evening with parents and family members as well, as many staff members, made many wonderful memories for everyone. Congratulations year 6 and I wish you every success as you venture into high school. To school captains for 2017: Malik Elabbasi, Kalani Henwood and vice captains, Gus Gilbert and Solomon Read, congratulations on your election. I know that you will be wonderful ambassadors for our school. To the school leaders; Dolores Johnson, Buddy Hippi, Sienna Gilbert, Sean Sowell, Alani Berry, Bridgett Paul, what a fantastic team you will be. Congratulations on your elections also. Next year is shaping up to be just as busy as this year. Teachers return to school on January 27 th , 2017, for our staff development day. We will be investigating Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and what this approach can offer Yamba Public School. To start us off on this path, there will be a short parent workshop held on the staff development day: 27/1/17 from 12 - 12.45. Please come in and find out more and to have a say around your expectations and developing a supportive and positive school culture. I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday. Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. Principal Diana Foley UPCOMING EVENTS DECEMBER Friday 16th Students last day! 2017 Students (Yr 1– 6) resume Monday 30th January. PBL focuses on creating positive learning environments with high expectations for not only academic results but for social and behavioural results. It is not a program which addresses only naughty students; it is about building a common vision for everyone in the school, using consistent language which is based on high expectations. There is a well-established link between student behaviour and academic achievement. It is that link which drives the need to develop the ‘whole child’ through ensuring a balance of skill building based on both the academic and social capacity of the students. In its initial stages of PBL, we will start with the end in mind, ie how do we wish Yamba PS students to be viewed as they make their way into the world and what skills will they need in order to make their way into the world beyond Yamba PS? The staff, students and parents/carers will be consulted about what they value at Yamba Public School and, through the creation of 3-5 expectations, the school will then spend time, planning and then actively teach- ing and acknowledging positive behav- iours. Through creating a consistent environment with the same expectations for ‘everyone, everywhere, every time’, Yamba PS will be able to enable academically and socially successful students.

Jo Stewart (PBL Head Teacher) will be

working with staff and spend time with

interested parents and carers around

developing the expectations and

explaining what PBL is.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is

linked to developing a culture in the

school which supports student

Wellbeing. Whilst schools strive for

excellence in teaching and learning, the

development of personal skills and

building respectful relationships also

enables success across the school. PBL

social and behavioural results. It is not

In its initial stages of PBL, we will start

with the end in mind, ie how do we wish

Yamba PS students to be viewed as

they make their way into the world and

what skills will they need in order to

make their way into the world beyond

Yamba PS? The staff, students and

parents/carers will be consulted about

what they value at Yamba Public School

and, through the creation of 3-5

expectations, the school will then spend

time, planning and then actively teach-

ing and acknowledging positive behav-

iours. Through creating a consistent

environment with the same

expectations for ‘everyone,

everywhere, every time’, Yamba PS will

be able to enable academically and

socially successful students.
