Paving the Road to Yamaha Motor Corporation "I want to carry out trial manufacture of motorcycle engines." It was from these words spoken by Genichi Kawakami (Yamaha Motor's first president) in 1953, that today's Yamaha Motor Company was born. "If you're going to do something, be the best."

Genichi Kawakami

The first Yamaha motorcycle... the YA-1. Then, in January of 1955 the Hamakita Factory of Nippon Gakki was built and production began on the YA-1. With confidence in the new direction that Genichi was taking, Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. was founded on July 1, 1955. Staffed by 274 enthusiastic employees, the new motorcycle manufacturer built about 200 units per month.

11

Genichi Kawakami's history with Yamaha was long and rich. He saw the new corporate headquarters in Cypress, California and the 25th Anniversary of Yamaha become a reality in 1980. He also watched bike #20 million roll off the assembly line in 1982. Genichi passed away on May 25, 2002 yet his vision lives on through the people and products of Yamaha, throughout the world.

YAMAHA LAUNCHING INDIA'S FIRST SPORTS BIKE I recall during 80's riding in Rx100 was a great passion for all bike lovers. Yamaha name was become a house hold name in most of the house in India because of one only Rx100. All young boys loved that bike and its1 9

melodious sound. But later Yamaha was not able imprint the same passion with another model though the reputation of Yamaha was highest among bike lovers who admire the sexy style and performance of YAMAHA R1 and YAMAHA R6 yet another catchy name associated with Yamaha was the legendary Valentino Rossi. YAMAHA RX 100 VALENTINO ROSSI

What would the average Indian fan expect from designers like YAMAHA? They dream nothing less than riding in R1 in the streets of India! Its dream for all of us to move with speed of wind in the streets of Cochin kaloor and Marine Drive ...well this dream seems distant but what Yamaha can contribute nothing less than what they promised in latest Auto Expo in New Delhi....The launch of YZF R-15.... Company official says it's the DNA of R1. YAMAHA R1 > YAMAHA YZF-R15

2 0

This will really shake the concept of Indian two wheeler Market. Yamaha has really initiated the process months back with the launch of YAMAHA R1 in selected showrooms. I got the privilege to interact with the distributors of R1, the confidence levels are much above they expected but average Indian youth will not be able to spend Rs 10.5 lakhs for a bike so the benefit has not extended to majority. YAMAHA YZF R 15 will fulfill this dream. Surely, this will be the first bike to set a bench mark in India. Company officials' have kept the specification as secret but different rumors are there, all are matching with one point that R15 will be 150 CC. Years back YAMAHA has launched another outstanding bike in 125 CC segment in Asian markets YZF-R1 - State-of-the art race technology The YZF-R1 is a legend of the supersport world, an acclaimed one-litre performer thats become a motorcycling icon, an all-powerful World Superbike race-winning machine thats also a monument to the power of beauty. The R1s performance is electrifying and yet what makes this

2 1

motorcycle truly remarkable is its superbly rider-friendly character because Yamahas avant-garde, race-bred technology puts you confidently in control.

YZF-R1 BACK ER IN

Everyone can hold the throttle wide open up the straight, its how well everything works after you close the go-tube that will make the biggest difference to how competitive your lap is. With the R1s slipper clutch metering the amount of back torque, you get outstanding control and accuracy, and blisteringly fast corner entry. The slipper clutch enables changes in clutch plate pressure when torque force comes to bear on the crank from the rear wheel, and exemplifi es what is most remarkable about the R1 engine - not only the amount of power, but the linearity and superb transitional characteristics of that power. STIFF AND FLEXIBLE As chassis loads continue to escalate its only logical that the chassis itself should be a tuneable component. Our engineers have identifi ed specific areas of the frame where stiffer is better, and others where fl ex provides the key to good handling. By tuning fl ex quotients of the main frame, rear arm2 3

and fork, Yamaha created an optimal rigidity balance for the new YZF-R1. As a result, chassis response to initial steering inputs is light and responsive while stability in high-speed turns is excellent, and overall handling qualities simply brilliant.

MT-01 - Torque like a hammer It's a genius idea unite a hi-tech 1,670cc V-twin with an aluminium sports frame and cutting-edge suspension and brakes and you've got a sports riding revolution. There is nothing like the MT-01: a massive engine that produces huge torque for hammer-blow acceleration, a sports chassis that knifes through the turns, a pulsating exhaust note that's total aural ecstasy and monumental styling that'll stop the traffic. The three tuning forks of the Yamaha logo mark represent the cooperative relationship that links the three pillars of our business -technology, production, and sales. They also evoke the robust vitality that has forged a reputation for sound and music the world over, a territory indicated by the enclosing circle. The mark also symbolizes the three essential musical elements: melody, harmony, and rhythm. 1898

4Ps of Marketing Marketing is an ongoing process of planning and executing the marketing mix (Product, Price, Place, Promotion often referred to as the 4 Ps) for products, services or ideas to create exchange between individuals and organizations. Marketing tends to be seen as a creative industry, which includes advertising, distribution and selling. It is also concerned with anticipating the customers' future needs and wants, which are often discovered through market research. Essentially, marketing is the process of creating or directing an organization to be successful in selling a product or service that people not only desire, but are willing to buy. Therefore good marketing must be able to create a "proposition" or set of benefits for the end customer that delivers value through products or services. Four Ps In the early 1960s, Professor Neil Borden at Harvard Business School identified a number of company performance actions that can influence the consumer decision to purchase goods or services. Borden suggested that all those actions of the company represented a Marketing Mix. Professor E. Jerome McCarthy, also at the Harvard Business School in the early 1960s, suggested that the Marketing Mix contained 4 elements: product, price, place and promotion. In popular usage, "marketing" is the promotion of products, especially advertising and branding. However, in professional usage the term has a wider meaning which recognizes that marketing is customer-centered. Products are often developed to meet the desires of groups of customers or even, in some cases, for specific customers. E. Jerome McCarthy divided marketing into four general sets of activities. His typology has become so universally recognized that his four activity sets, the Four Ps, have passed into the language. The four Ps are:3 1

Product: The product aspects of marketing deal with the specifications of the actual goods or services, and how it relates to the end-user's needs and wants. The scope of a product generally includes supporting elements such as warranties, guarantees, and support. Pricing: This refers to the process of setting a price for a product, including discounts. The price need not be monetary - it can simply be what is exchanged for the product or services, e.g. time, energy, psychology or attention. Promotion: This includes advertising, sales promotion, publicity, and personal selling, branding and refers to the various methods of promoting the product, brand, or company. Placement (or distribution): refers to how the product gets to the customer; for example, point of sale placement or retailing. This fourth P has also sometimes been called Place, referring to the channel by which a product or services is sold (e.g. online vs. retail), which geographic region or industry, to which segment (young adults, families, business people), etc. also referring to how the environment in which the product is sold in can affect sales.

These four elements are often referred to as the marketing mix,[3] which a marketer can use to craft a marketing plan. The four Ps model is most useful when marketing low value consumer products. Industrial products, services, high value consumer products require adjustments to this model. Services marketing must account for the unique nature of services. Industrial or B2B marketing must account for the long term contractual agreements that are typical in supply chain transactions. Relationship marketing attempts to do this by looking at marketing from a long term relationship perspective rather than individual transactions. As a counter to this, Morgan, in Riding the Waves of Change (Jossey-Bass, 1988), suggests that one of the greatest limitations of the 4 Ps approach "is that it unconsciously emphasizes the insideout view (looking from the company outwards), whereas the essence of marketing should be the outsidein approach". Nevertheless, the 4 Ps offer a memorable and workable guide to the major categories of marketing activity, as well as a framework within which these can be used.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3 3

Research may be defined as the search for knowledge through an objective and scientific method of finding solution of problem. Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It includes the various steps that are generally adopted by a researcher in studying problem along with the logic behind them. During my research I have adopted the following research design. Research Design: To decide the objective and subjective of the research. To determine the most suitable method of research. To determine the sources of data. To decide the appropriate research instrument for data collection. To determine the suitable sampling design and sampling size. To conduct the field survey for data collection. To prepare the research report. Descriptive Research This method is undertaken when the researcher is interested in knowing about the characteristics of certain groups such as age, sex, education level, income. Interested in knowing the proportion of unit in a given population who behaved in a particular way, determining the relationship between two or more variable. This method was the most suitable in my research work. Data collection There may be different types of information and data, Some of the information may be unpublished, some is complete and some is3 4

incomplete, some is reliable data and some is based, It is necessary for the researcher to know and the information which is usually employed in marketing research work and the types of sources from which it is generally collected. The research problem decides the nature of the sources of data. They may be primary data and secondary data. Primary Data Primary data is being collected during the course of asking questions by performing surveys. Primary data is obtained either through respondent; either though questionnaire or through personal interview. I have collected the data through both of them. Secondary Data: Are the data already available in the form of print material, website, journals etc, I have used some Magazines, Newspapers, Websites and course material for that purpose. Research Instrument: I have used the structured questionnaire in my research process which has carefully designed keeping the entire objective in mind. Most of the questions in my questionnaires were closed ended in nature. Sampling plan: The process of collecting observation from the elements of a large population may be expensive, time consuming and difficult. It will be cheaper and quicker to collect information from a sample plan of the population. A sample is a subset of population through a valid statistical procedure so that it can be regarded as representative of the entire population. The valid statistical procedure of drawing sample from the population is called sampling. Sampling plan consists of following elements:Sample units:3 5

My sample units were direct dealers + sub-dealers + service centre and customers so it is clear that sampling units are nothing but variable to be studied. Sample Frame: The entire list which contains the sample unit is known as sample frame; In this case my sample frame was Delhi city. Sample size: The large sample is more accurate the results would be but practically it is not feasible to survey the entire target population or even the substantial portion of it. In this project, being aware of the time and cost constraints, sample size was 2 direct dealers including 27 sub-dealers and customers. Sample method: In my research process I have used Non probability sampling, which involves purposive or deliberate selection of particular units of a sample. Contact method: Personal interview is that in which an interviewer obtains information from interviewee by meeting face to face. The methods of collecting information through personal interviews are usually carried out in a structured way. Field survey: After carefully choosing the way I have started the survey for accuracy of the data I picked my sampling unit from some parts of the city, and then went on to analysis and report making part.

suzuki hayabusa

Suzuki introduced the sportbike Suzuki GSX1300R, popularly known as the Hayabusa, in 1999. Since its inception the Suzuki Hayabusa was widely regarded as the fastest production motorcycle in the world until major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers voluntarily imposed speed regulators in their bikes. The Hayabusa derives its name from the Japanese term for the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest creature on the planet with speeds in excess of 300 km/h in its hunting dive. The Hayabusa's 4-stroke, four-cylinder liquid-cooled 1299cc engine enables it to generate an enormous peak power of 175 bhp at 9800 rpm and reach from 0-100 km/h in three seconds flat. The Hayabusa's roaring success prompted other motorcycle manufacturers to come up with similar speed merchants like the BMW K1200S and the Kawasaki ZX-14R. With the Kawasaki ZX12R Ninja, Kawasaki plunged into the highperformance sportbike war raging among the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers. The Ninja's liquid-cooled, 1199cc DOHC, 16-valve 4cylinder engine generates a peak power of 178 bhp at 10500 rpm. The Kawasaki Ninja's revolutionary all-aluminium monocoque frame and cast steering swingarm pivot areas realise an extremely stiff structure and contribute to the bike's superb high-speed stability and supersport handling performance. The ZX12R's wind-tunnel designed fairing was developed with help from Kawasaki's aircraft division and the redesigned upper cowl has a shorter nose for improved aerodynamics and a sportier look. In honour of an agreement reached among Japanese manufacturers, starting with 2001 models, Kawasaki introduced speed limiters in the ZX-12R to reduce the bike's top speed to 300 km/h. Summary and conclusion R15 Yamaha YZF R15 is the first model for the Indian market designed in the true supersport image and featuring a high-level balance of enjoyable running performance on winding roads. Packed full of state-of-the-art technologies, the new YZF-R15 boasts performance worthy of a supersport model and a body design that evokes the image of the YZF-R series and gives visual expression to the quality of its ride. The YZF R15 is powered by 149.8cc Fuel Injected liquid cooled engine that will be producing an almost impossible 17bhp with maximum torque of 15 Nm at 7500rpm; which makes it like the most powerful bike under 200cc range and has a 6-speed Transmission. Yamaha is showcasing its potential for India with some real performance. It is based on totally race technology with which MotoGP bikes runs, technology with which R1 is built. It has Indias first 150cc 4 valve engine with forged pistons, Deltabox frame & 6speed gear box. Its overall length is 1995mm, overall width is 670mm and its wheels base is 1290mm. Since6 0

sporty YZF R15 is shorter too and its height is just 1070mm. YZF R15 features F 80/90 -17 inches tyres in the front and 100/80-17 inches tyres in the rear. Both the tyres are tubeless. Design The R Design: This characteristic of motorcycles designed by YAMAHA as represented by the R series reflects the philosophy running through these models expressing performance visually. For example, YZF-R6 shows a strong body line that springs up in a single line from the rear axle to the pivot and then to the head pipe. This is a visual expression of the straight shape of the Deltabox frame. These elements are a visual expression of frame rigidity. Viewed from the side, the shape created by the side panel and the upper surface of the tank creates an impression of the center of gravity shifting to the front tire. This is a visual representation of how the front tire grips the road in its sporty running performance. Needless to say, YZF-R1, with its athletic build, is also a visual expression of performance. A characteristic of the R series is that, when you view the machine, you get a sense of its concept and performance. This philosophy has been fully transmitted to YZF-R15. An important point to note is that this motorcycle is not a scaled-down version of YZF-R1 or YZF-R6. YZF-R15s design is based on having an excellent engine cooling method. The shape of the cowling around the radiator area was determined so that the shapes of the air intake area and the rear outlet area where the air is scooped out are optimized to improve radiator efficiency. As for the outlet area, the mid-cowl area was designed using sculpturing 3D methods to create a three dimensional shape with a sense of volume. This resulted in an outlet area through which air is directed outwards with minimal resistance. We were able to present the new R series also in terms of design, and we have been able to maximize the performance of the liquid cooled engine, which will be a first for the Indian market. When viewed from the front, it gives a sense of volume that seems well beyond its 150cc displacement. This does not simply mean that it is voluminous, but that it is grounded in the Art of Engineering which transforms function into art.6 1

Engine YZF-R15 is equipped with this all-aluminum cylinder called the DiASil Cylinder and a forged piston, the same type of piston used in YAMAHAs supersport bikes. The fact that both the piston and cylinder of YZF-R15 are all-aluminum ensures excellent heat dissipation, eliminates heat-induced engine power loss, and helps improve fuel efficiency. The DiASil Cylinder is given a special surface treatment to prevent oil evaporation from the cylinders surface and improve oil consumption. The cylinder also has excellent hardness and is considerably resistant to wear compared to conventional iron sleeves. Additionally, the piston is made in a forging process, the optimum way of achieving lightweight designs. The reciprocating mass with the forged piston is approximately 20% less ( according to Yamaha test ) than with an engine of the same displacement fitted with a conventional cast aluminum piston. Resulting in an invigorating feeling when revving up. Conventional pistons are typically made in a casting process where molten aluminum is cast in a mold. YAMAHA developed its proprietary controlled forging technology in 1997, which enables mass production of forged aluminum pistons. These pistons have been used in sport models such as the R series. The same manufacturing process was used to develop YZF-R15. Forged pistons retain the excellent strength of aluminum alloys because the metallurgic matrix of aluminum is not affected during the fabrication process. Therefore, the piston can be made lighter and thinner. Chassis YZF-R15 is equipped with a linked type monocross suspension that delivers a comfortable ride and a cushioning performance that is less prone to bottoming out. In particular, it reduces annoying sinking when riding tandem. The linked monocross suspension consists of a link mechanism sandwiched between the rear arm and cushion unit to create changes in the lever ratio based on the lever effect. When the shock absorber is almost fully extended, the lever ratio is high and therefore the spring is soft, and the damper works softly as well. As the shock absorber strokes in, the lever ratio gradually decreases and the spring rate increases. Eventually, when it is nearly fully stroked in, the lever ratio becomes small and the spring becomes hard and strong. The damper

6 2

also becomes hard. By making changes to the lever ratio in this way, we were able to achieve soft riding comfort as well as excellent damping under intense load conditions. The optimization of the frame and rear arm rigidity of the Deltabox Frame combined with the effects of the linked type monocross suspension achieve good riding comfort, agile handling, and turnability, hardly ever causing bottoming out. Fuel Efficiency

In order to maximize the efficiency of the fuel injector, which injects the optimum amount of fuel for different amounts of intake air, YZF-R15 is equipped with a large 3-liter air cleaner. The duct area of the intake duct was designed optimally to optimize the flow of intake air. Additionally, the use of a 4-valve combustion chamber (a combustion chamber with 2 intake and exhaust valves each) has allowed designers to layout the spark plug at the center of the combustion chamber for better flame propagation. This also increases the total valve area relative to the 2-valve chambers for improved intake/exhaust efficiency (volumetric efficiency). YZF-R15 is fitted with a hemispherical 4-valve combustion chamber, a configuration that allows intake and exhaust valves to be laid out in the smallest size possible. Summery and conclusion R1, MT01 I could start telling you what a great motorcycle the R1 is, but well, you could just read any review as everyone seems to have come to the same conclusion anyway. But I can tell you according to my research. For starters, it's quite comfortable on longer rides. A lot of people complain about getting tired wrists on an extreme machine like this, but as long as you don't lean on the clip-ones too much and ride on nice twisty roads to keep you busy, it's no problem at all. In the city, it's not the ideal bike, but it does get me around. As long as you can get past the lines of cars (which isn't that hard with a small motorcycle) and you can keep on moving, it's ok. (Well, the problem with not moving is more in the protective clothing I'm always wearing when riding my R1, which can be quite hot when you're not moving on a hot summer day). You should never ride an R1 on a highway if you want to have fun. It's simply impossible to drive remotely close to the speed limit, so you're6 3

always looking out for speed camera's and police vehicles ;-) And most highways don't have many corners anyway. Of course, the best place to drive an R1 is on a race circuit. We don't have that many race circuits around here though, so there aren't a lot of opportunities to ride it there., but the big possibility of crashing it when racing (in which case we couldn't afford a replacement R1) has kept me from racing it. So we just try to find as many roads as possible which resemble race circuits, to have a lot of fun on R1 ;-) And when you want to take it (relatively) easy, the enormous torque which the R1 power plant delivers from low down makes sure you don't have to keep the revs up. It's really a quite comfortable touringbike ;-)
