Custom Installation Compatibility(YSP-1100 and YSP-1000)The YSP-1100 and YSP-1000 support IR passthrough for the convenient operation of othercomponents. These components can becontrolled by an IR signal sent through theRemote In terminal. The IR signal received bythe Remote Control Sensor on the front panelis directly output through the remote outterminal. It is also provided with an RS-232Cinterface for a touch-panel controller.

IntelliBeam Automated System CalibrationThis Yamaha exclusive featureensures optimum multi-channel sound reproduction with accurate imagelocation. By monitoring and analyzing the sound withthe microphone included with the YSP components,IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam anglesand modes, while optimizing the level and frequencyresponse of each beam. This makes initial setup bothextremely simple while acoustically perfect. Manualsetup is also possible.

My Beam Focuses the Sound at a Specific Positionwith Just a Touch (YSP-1100 and YSP-900)Instead of surround sound, users can focus the soundto the place where they are sitting. Even in noisysurroundings, you can hear dialogue and other soundsclearly. It is also handy to avoid disturbing others whoare sleeping, for example, as well as helping peoplewho are hard of hearing. You just point the remotecontrol at the YSP unit, hold the “My Beam” buttonfor a few seconds, and the sound is directed right atthat spot. There are also four other selectable soundmodes: 5 Beam, 3 Beam, Stereo + 3 Beam, and Stereo.

Multiple channels are superimposed to create the sound. In a 5.1-channel configuration, the beam speakers together create thesound of 5.1 superimposed channels.

Sound is projected at the listener from five directions: straight ahead, reflected off one wall, and reflected off two walls (so it is heard from the rear).

High Dynamic Power Capability (All Receivers) andLinear Damping (Except RX-V461 and RX-V361)These receivers are capable of delivering largeamounts of reserve power for accurate reproductionof the high energy peaks that are especiallyprevalent in digital audio sources. Level variations due to high amp impedancetend to reduce an amplifier’s damping factor, andfrequency variations cause it to fluctuate. Thiscircuit cancels the effect of these variations,maintaining a high, stable damping factor, forsuperior articulation of all sounds and betterfrequency response. Yamaha’s Linear Dampingmaintains a high, stable damping factor even atfrequencies from 10Hz to 20kHz, where it generallytends to fall off.The result issuperiorarticulation of allsounds.

HDMI Video Upconversion (RX-V2700, RX-V1700 and RX-V861)One way of ensuring the highest video quality for yourhome theater system is to use the best possible videosignal. Pure Direct for Highest Sound QualityPure Direct is a special listening mode thatcauses the signal to bypass all but the most basicaudio circuitry, and even turns off the display toprevent any chance of noise interference. Itprovides the purest possible high-fidelity soundfrom all sources including USB and HDMI inputs.

Switching the PLL loop filter (transmission coefficient) stabilizesthe clock produced from the digital input to reduce clock jitter,thereby improving sound quality. Lower clock jitter improves thesound orientation and sound field representation.

Pure Direct delivers two-channel audio sources such as CD andmulti-channel audio sources including Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio at levels of sound quality that will satisfy even the mostdedicated music lovers.

For multi-room custominstallations, power amp channelscan be assigned in two ways: fivefor the Main Zone and two forZone 2 (for 5.1 channel sound inthe main room), and three for theMain Zone and two each forZones 2 and 3 (for music in allthree rooms without the need forextra amplifiers).

Compressed Music Enhancer (RX-V2700, RX-V1700, RX-V861, RX-N600, RX-V661, RX-V461 and RX-V361)MP3, AAC and other musicformats that use digitalcompression cut out musicdata in the high and low frequency ranges andeliminate small sounds during high volume segmentsin order to decrease the size of the data. The factthat data is missing is difficult to hear with portableplayers, but when listening through speakers it isclearly apparent that part of the musical nuance islost. When you listen to this music, you will bedissatisfied with the inadequate brilliance of the

high range, and with the thin response in the mid-low range.

The Compressed Music Enhancer is an exclusiveYamaha function that uses our proprietary DSPtechnology to create harmonics from the remainingmusic data utilized by the DSP circuit. It focuses onthe fact that the music elements that are lost whenthe original music is digitally compressed are mainlythe harmonics. It combines High FrequencyExpansion Processing, which improves theunconstrained treble sound, with Low FrequencyEmphasis Processing, which supplements the deepbass sound. These processes vividly revive the range,presence, force and dynamism of compressed music.

YPAO Sets the Best Sound for Your Room —Automatically! (DSP-Z9, RX-V2700, RX-V1700,RX-V861, RX-V661 and RX-V461)YPAO uses a smallmicrophone and advancedprocessing technology toanalyze room acoustics. It then automaticallyadjusts various speaker parameters for optimumsound quality at the listening position. It works inonly three minutes and is extremely easy to use.With YPAO, you do not have to worry about carefulspeaker placement and will be assured of“professionally calibrated” surround sound quality.The RX-V2700, RX-V1700, RX-V861 and RX-V661have been upgraded with low frequency supportdown to 31.5 Hz and the parametric EQ now hastwo extra bands for a subwoofer. The RX-V2700offers six YPAO settings that can be memorized.

Selectable 9-Band SubwooferFrequencies (All Components)These components provide a choice of ninesubwoofer crossover frequencies. Inaddition to providing a wider range thanother amplifiers, the steps from 80 to 120Hz are only 10 Hz apart for more preciseselection. This choice of crossovers lets you “fine-tune” the audio system by selecting the optimumfrequency to maximize amp/receiver/speakerefficiency and also ensures best performancefrom a wider variety of speakers.

Subwoofer Phase Select (All Components)Another feature for optimum bass sound. If bassis weak or muddy, switching the phase of thesubwoofer will often improve performance.

Dialogue Lift (DSP-Z9, RX-V2700, RX-V1700,RX-V861 and RX-V661)Clear dialogue is important for movie enjoyment,however, when using front and center speakerspositioned below the screen, dialogue may not beheard with maximum clarity. The Dialogue Liftfunction causes part of the front and centerchannel sound to be output from the presencespeakers, so you hear the dialogue more clearly.

Conventional start up of an AV receiverrequires you to turn on components such as aDVD player, select the source (i.e.: DVD player)you need to ensure it is on the right DSPprogram and then you can press play. However,with Yamaha’s SCENE all you need to do ispress one button which will automatically turnon the DVD player, it will ensure that it is onthe right DSP setting and it will even start themovie for you!

So how does it work? The new series of AVreceivers from Yamaha all come with fourSCENE buttons and each one is pre-programedto perform a different function. The defaultsettings of these SCENE buttons are DVD MovieViewing, Music Disc Listening, TV Viewing andRadio Listening.

Yamaha’s Exclusive Advanced PMD Cone forTheater Sound Reproduction (525 A-PMD and 325 A-PMD Series)The Advanced PMD (Polymer-injected MicaDiaphragm) cones are 15% lighter than previoustypes, thanks to the use of a low specific gravitymaterial called PMP (Poly-Menthyl-Penten) thatprovides faster response (speedof sound rise and fall). Internalloss has been increased by 43%,lessening unwanted resonancesto achieve the smooth frequencyresponse that results in natural-sounding vocals.

Diecast Aluminum Baskets (525 A-PMD Series)Aluminum provides three to five times higherflexural strength than the usual metal or plastictypes. In addition, the baskets are 43% thickerthan conventional baskets with the samediameter. By increasing stiffness and suppressingunwanted resonance, detailed musical nuancescan be more clearly heard.

Waveguide Horn (HX and EF Series)Modern movie theaters are designed to offer ahighly absorptive acoustic environment in whichsoundtrack recordings with five or more channelscan be used to achieve a rich sense of spatialexpression. To achieve a similar level of spatial

expression at home, it istherefore necessary to usespeakers with a direct/reflectedsound ratio that is quitedifferent from the speakersused for conventional musicrecordings.

While maximizing sound clarity andimaging, the designers strived to drastically reduceinternal standing waves and produce an expansivesound with an exceptional feeling of depth. Theirsolution was to create a cabinet with non-parallelsides, divide the woofer and midrange sections bya slanted partition, and strengthen the interiorwith large, vertical ladder-type bracing.

D R I V E R SAdvanced PMD Woofer and Midrange ConesIn order to provide very fast attack time (sound riseand fall), as well as excellent midrange clarity andbass response, Yamaha developed Advanced PMD(Advanced Polymer-injected Mica Diaphragm) conesthat are extremely light, rigid and sturdy. Theyemploy a low specific gravity material called PMP(Poly-Methyl-Pentene) that is much lighter thaneither paper or polypropylene. Precisely determinedamounts of mica and talc are added, which testinghas proved contribute to the beautiful quality ofsounds in the vocal range. These drivers’ internal losscharacteristics decrease unwanted resonances toachieve the smooth frequency response that resultsin natural sounding vocals.
