The History of Yada College

Yada College began in the year 2000 with six students. Its first classroom was the Speech and Drama Studio at Mrs. Ruth Rodger’s home, 14-24th Avenue, Mabelreign. There was enough office space for 10 students and by mid-year those places were filled and the Centre overlapped into the adjoining room.

By 2001 numbers had doubled to 20 and the Centre moved to a cottage on the property of Rob and Margie Hollands,4 Charles Bullock Avenue, Belvedere. The Centre then comprised two classes-a junior class and a senior class with 10 students in each. Mrs Allana Davy was Supervisor for the juniors and Mrs. Ruth Rodger was Supervisor for the seniors.

At the end of 2002 Mrs Davy left to prepare for the arrival of her second child and the junior class was taken over by Mrs Charity Chipapa.

In 2003 a temporary class was formed to house 7 ABC students under the supervision of Mrs. Joy Pascoe. After these students had completed this course some students joined the main Yada College junior class while others went off to other learning centres.

In 2004 Rob and Margie Holland’s sold their Belvedere home and very kindly housed the Centre at 12 Ridgeview Drive, Sentosa.  Here it grew to three classes (two senior, one junior) and then an ABC Learn to Read class was squeezed in.  A Board of Governors was formed to meet monthly with regard to decisions and general running of the school, including the accounts.

In May 2009 Yada College had become too big and thus moved to larger premises at 43 Eastcourt Road, Belvedere.   By this time the four classes (two junior, two senior) were managed by various supervisors and monitors, with an Administrator, Pastor, and part time Accountant.

With the termination of the lease agreement, Yada College has moved to its present address at 83 Kingsmead Road, Borrowdale, which are large premises with several outbuildings, swimming pool and space for expansion and advancement.

The Principal

to work at Coghlan, Welsh and Guest for four years.  She left to have her first child, a daughter, Kirsten, in December 1986, having married Ewen Rodger in February 1985.  She worked part time at Kantor and Immerman whilst studying for her Licentiate Diploma in Speech and Drama with Trinity College.  In 1988, once qualified, Ruth began teaching this subject full time in schools and privately in her studio at home.

Ruth’s  second child, Danielle was born in February 1990.  Her son, James was born in July 1997.

Ruth began teaching the ACE Programme in September 1999 when she made the decision to home school her daughter, Kirsten.  In 2000 she opened as a Learning Centre, which was the birth of YADA STUDY CENTRE, now called YADA COLLEGE.

The College is now in its fifth venue, having outgrown the other premises.

Ruth’s  passion is teaching.  She works full time at Yada College as the Principal and the Supervisor in the Senior Class.  She handles the ICCE graduations and does the secretarial and bursar jobs as well.  She still teaches Speech and Drama during, and after school hours at the College.

In 1997 Ruth obtained the LAMDA Licentiate Diploma in Speech and Drama, and completed the Advanced Christian Counselling Diploma in 2005.

Ruth has many interests, some of which are :-  spiritual matters, education, health, exercise and nutrition.  She reads as much as time will allow on these subjects.

Ruth also offers counselling for the students.

She has two grandsons and one granddaughter, and many pets!!

YADA COLLEGE, ACE AND DYSLEXIA AND ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

Dyslexia and ADD or ADHD are education learning difficulties that are on the increase.  There are several reasons for this and research on the Internet websites and books by experts will provide parents with the information they need to help their child/ren if these problems manifest themselves.ACE is NOT a program designed for children with learning challenges.  However, because of its individualized aspects, ACE can suit a child who is intellectually sound, but who needs to learn in a different way to that presented in a conventional schooling system.  Dyslexics and children with attention difficulties are often labeled as stupid or lazy; when in truth, they are just not following the teaching method.  Working on ACE can help such a student to learn in the way that suits him/her, and some of the ACE procedures can be tempered to reduce frustration and speed up the process of retaining information.

Yada is a College with a heart for the child who has learning problems.  It wants to give these children the opportunity to find themselves, learn about their specific

Page 5: YADA COLLEGE PROSPECTUS - About Us Yada Study Centre …  · Web viewThere are no examinations on the ACE programme ... Science, Social Studies, Word Building) ... English Speaking

5

problem, take responsibility for it, and discover the method of learning that suits the problem.  Whilst Yada sets out to be the best Academic College it can be, Academics are not to be worshipped.  Often these children have other skills that will stand them in good stead in a future career.  Many are greatly talented, and Yada would like to help the student further themselves in order to build their self esteem and identity.

To this end Yada College offers a classroom facility and a specialized teacher for children who have learning difficulties, but who are essentially of average or high intelligence.  The parents of such children need to be closely involved in their child’s education and have the time to invest in working with the teacher to give the child the best possible opportunity to adapt school and home life to the particular challenge.  In many cases the problem could be completely overcome.

For further information please make an appointment to see the Principal, and Supervisor of the class.

About Accelerated Christian Education (ACE)

ACE is an American system of Christian education originally designed as a home schooling system.  The curriculum has been updated and developed since its inception in 1975.  Its features are Christian input and emphasis on individualised learning.  Curriculum has been divided into sections called Paces.  There is a test at the end of each Pace.  A set of 12 Paces constitutes a year’s work.  There are no examinations on the ACE programme – only tests which are all collated and kept on record for the student’s ultimate graduation.  Within each Pace are a series of Check-ups to test the student on a small section of concepts learned.  Prior to the Pace Test is a Self-test on the whole section to benefit the student.

ACE stresses that it is the student’s responsibility to learn.  In charge of a class is a Supervisor who facilitates the student’s learning with the help of a Monitor.  A good ratio for a class would be nine students, to one supervisor.

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (ICCE)

ACE students do not write examinations.

When a student reaches Pace 1085 in all subjects, the student must register with The International Certificate of Christian Education Limited (ICCEL), which is the global unit of ICCE (Africa).  This serves the certification requirements of ACE graduates in Africa.   This registration enables the student’s work to be monitored and moderated, and when the student completes his/her education, a graduation certificate will be issued from this organization.

Following an in depth equivalence assessment by the National Recognition Information Centre UK (NARIC), the ICCE qualification is now officially recognized as equivalent to Cambridge O and A Levels.

Twelve Paces constitutes a year’s work in any subject.  A year’s work completes a Credit for an ICCE certificate.  There are various levels of certificate that can be attained, depending on the student’s ability:-

Basic Level – 48 Paces in each of the core subjects (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Word Building)

Vocational  Level – The ICCE Vocational certificate is less academic and includes more practical and life skills.  It is for students who cannot manage certain General Level subjects.  Students completing at this level would not be expected to proceed further.

Foundation Level – Up to Pace 1096 in all core subjects, plus one elective, and one Bible subject.

General Level – Up to Pace 1108 in all subjects, plus 3 electives, 2 Bible subjects, a Science Project and a Social Studies Essay, and ICDL certificate (17 Credits). General Level is equivalent to 5 O Levels at a C grade.

Intermediate Level – Up to Pace 1120 in the core subjects, with the course work as per General Level and three additional essays, and two additional electives.  This level is equivalent to 7 O Levels at an A or B grade.

Advanced Level – Up to Pace 1132 or 1144 in the core subjects, with course work.  At this level a student may take a bias depending on his/her academic strengths.  More information on this is available in the ICCE Handbook on their website.

Since 2000 over 450 ACE graduates entered tertiary institutes in South Africa.  In 2010 ACE in South Africa announced an option for ACE learners to write the National Senior Certificate for the purpose of university entrance.  ACE graduates may also write SATs twice yearly in order to achieve an international score for university entrance.

The Curriculum

“School Of Tomorrow” original curriculum is purchased from South Africa and imported, while the printed curriculum is purchased (black and white only) is printed in Zimbabwe by permission from “School Of Tomorrow” in South Africa.

The curriculum covers from Pre-School through to the end of High School. There are twelve levels equivalent to 12 years of schooling beginning with a phonetic based learning to read programme in Grade 1 and going right through to the upper levels of the high school.

Preschool Programme

A full year’s programme of activities designed to lead naturally to the ABCs (Learning to read programme) Paces are available in each of 5 subjects making a total of 60 Paces to be covered in the course of a year. The programme can be taught individually or in a classroom environment.

ABCs Learning To Read Programme

This follows the Preschool Programme. A child is tested to ascertain his readiness for the programme which teaches him to read phonetically. The entire programme is completed in 12-15 weeks and can be taught individually or in the classroom environment. The child is tested on completion of ascertain complete mastery of the material. After a successful completion he then moves on the main curriculum and can proceed at his own pace from this point on.

Core Curriculum

The core curriculum consists if six subjects

Mathematics English Grammar Literature and Creative Writing Word Building (Spelling and Vocabulary) Social Studies (History and Geography) Science

In each subject at each grade or level there are 12 Paces starting with Pace 1001 and proceeding to at least Pace 1108 (9 years) and Bible Studies and Electives 1144 (12 years) in most other subjects.

Expanded Curriculum

For faster students in the lower levels Bible Reading and Animal Science are 2 additional subjects that can be used to expand the curriculum. These are not recommended for average or slow students.

Afrikaans is also available as an additional subject and can be started in Grade 2.

At the higher levels Biblical Studies are added to the core subjects and a host of different electives are introduced which offer a broad based education of wide appeal. The student chooses to do a limited number of these electives some of which are courses taken outside the learning environment, such as First Aid and I.T. courses.

The ACE curriculum is very different from National Curriculum and there are NO EXAMINATIONS.  When a student reaches Pace 1085 in all subjects, the parents need to register the student with the MARANATHA FOUNDATION in Britain, from where the graduations are issued.  There are various levels a student can reach depending on ability.  Instead of examinations, a set of TWELVE Pace Tests constitutes a credit.  Credits are achieved in this way and these are commensurate with examinations written in conventional schooling systems.  Please see ICCE page for further information. What about sport?

Yada College provides some sport and club activities.  How do we enrol?

If Yada College has a place available, a meeting with the Principal is required together with a tour of the College.  An enrolment form will be offered   for completion by Parents or Guardian.  If the student has not been on the ACE programme before a Diagnostic Assessment will be required to be written.  This is NOT a TEST nor an EXAMINATION.  This is an exercise in order for staff members to place the student on the correct Pace Numbers at their place on the ACE education programme.           Calendar
