Commodore Pete Olmstead

First, I want to thank all those involved in the SAYRA cocktail party. I won't go into detail, because there are other articles in this issue. CSC has raised the bar again! On Saturday, February 21st J.C. Moore organized a DNR Boating Education Class at the club. All the slots were filled and we had several non-club members in attendance. Again, I would like to say this is a very worthwhile community activity and thanks to J.C. for all your hard work. We have some projects that need to be addressed on our Workday, April 4th. Hopefully we can begin landscaping the front of the clubhouse. The dirt hill along the upper driveway across from the Clubhouse needs to be cut down and cleaned up. We will make arrangements for some heavy equipment but bring your shovel too. If manpower permits, we'll tackle a new roof on the cook shed. Those of you that have attended the Board Meetings this year know how sensitive we are about our finances during a recession. We need to install gutters on the Clubhouse and Judge's house needs a new roof. These items have been put out to bid and we will discuss them at the March Board Meeting. On the subject of the Clubhouse repair, I have a verbal commitment from Weathers Construction to com-mence work on the porch the week of March 2nd. Notice I underlined the work verbal in the previous sen-tence. When I see the whites of their eyes I will notify the membership via the CSC Group Yahoo email. I hope everyone has taken the opportunity to sign up for this email. It is the fastest way for members to keep current on events at the club. Good Sailing, ~PetePetePetePete

Condemned to a world of black and white!

The adjacent “Save the Date” reminder from Nancy Olmstead prompts us to remind folks who send graphic material for the Telltale that we are stuck in a world of black and white. Nancy’s bunnies are in lovely colors, but you’ll see them in tones of gray. Continue to send us originals in color. We’ll do the conversions at the editor’s desk. But we just want you to be aware of our limitations concerning graphics. Also, when composing ads be mindful of the type face. It’s not necessary to stick with plain text but be aware that the fancier fonts are sometimes hard to read when the copy is shrunk to fit the space available. Thanks! ~JW

Palmer McArthur reports on a pleasant evening recently in the company of Ed Schlaefer, who moved some weeks ago to Still Hopes. They went out for supper and sorted out old times and solved various world problems. Ed does not get to the club very often, but old friends might give him a ring now and then. 791-0988. Doc Schlaefer turned 92 in January!

Attention Junior Sailors and Families: We will be having our first get-

together of 2009 on Saturday March 14, 6pm at the CSC clubhouse.

All arewelcome, so come on out whether you are an experienced member of the

JST, or a new sailor looking forward to your first camp this summer. We

will be discussing the 2009 SAYRA series, sharing pictures and stories

from the 2008 regattas and asking for your input in planning some fun

events for this season. A spaghetti and meatball dinner will be available for all attendees for $5.00 per

person. Please RSVP for the dinner to: [email protected]

“I have certainly been hearing the acco-lades for the fabulous SAYRA Reception/Cocktail Party that CSC hosted on February 6th,, ,” reports Rebecca Dotterer, “and that CSC has raised the bar for the SAYRA Friday Night party! It was beautiful and fun and it would never have happened without all the wonderful help and support I had, as there were approximately 250 guests in attendance. I must thank the following people and please forgive me if I have unintentionally left any-one off my list: Jan Jernigan, Nancy Olmstead, Harriet Zwart, Carolyn Tupper, Diana Wrisley, Karen Counts, Debra Hudson, Monica Szymanski, Pat Freeman, Deana Brehmer, Curt Rone, Donna Rone, Marybeth Mahrer, Susan Powell, Juli Calhoun, Alecia Milling, Cynthia Johnson, Candace Leaphart, Jeri Palmer, Allison Calhoun, Christopher Calhoun and his girlfriend Ann Miller, Billy Ray Davis, David Oliver, Deborah Kelly, Sara Reyes, Pete Olmstead, Jamie Tupper, Bart Hoernig, Joe Reyes, Charlie Faber, Bill Freeman, Johnny Dotterer, and Verd Cunningham. Well done! It was enjoyed by all.

The SAYRA RECEPTIONThe SAYRA RECEPTIONThe SAYRA RECEPTIONThe SAYRA RECEPTION————–––– A Huge Hit! A Huge Hit! A Huge Hit! A Huge Hit! “As a long-time attendee at SAYRA and US Sailing meetings, I’ve attended dozens of yacht club receptions, but none of them compared with the one you folks put on for SAYRA!” ~John Slater, Webster, NC.

Buses transported our SAYRA guests from the Marriott to the clubhouse door! Had we rolled out a red carpet they might have thought they were attending “The Oscars.”

“Attention to the smallest details made the party extra special,” re-ported Nancy Olmstead, who was the official Telltale photographer for the party. It may have been a small detail but those colorful miniature burgees were jaw droppers. Whilst the jaws were dropped the treats went you-know-where!!

CSC Commodore Pete Olmstead holds a Hobcaw YC burgee, for which he traded a CSC burgee with Ann and Paul Grizzle. >

CSC’s membership in The South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association dates back almost a half century. And CSC hosted the SAYRA Championships for the first time in 1962.

CSC Auxiliary NEWS

by Jan Jernigan, President

It’s time for March Madness at CSC. No, I’m not talking about basketball, but our #1 sport, SAILING! We have so much going on this month, it is going to fly by. March Madness begins with the Y-Flyer Midwinters Champion-ship March 6-8. If you’re up for the BEST burgers in town, plan to be at CSC on March 8th, just after racing. Your taste buds will thank you! Nan Nussler and Debra Kelly are in charge, so you know it’s going to be great! As you read this, Monica Szymanski and Haidee Stith are busy planning a fabulous CSCA Steak and Bingo Party! Folks say this is one of the best parties of the year. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 21st and send your reservations to: [email protected] or [email protected]. The always fun Tommy Whiteside Regatta will be at CSC March 28th and 29th. This regatta gives you one more opportunity to get another “Best Burger in Town”, just after racing on the 29th. Don’t miss it! CSCA has had two great meetings this year. Last month, Courtenay and Louise Givens provided a delicious February meal. On the 24th, Louise Givens hosted the popular Fat Tuesday Party at our own new clubhouse. Talk about a great party…beads, tiaras, and a lot of laughter and fun were abundant! Our own version of Fat Tuesday could change history! Thanks to Renee’s Catering for a fabulous meal. My mom taught me not to brag about anything ever, but if she had attended the SAYRA cocktail party on Febru-ary 6th, I think she would have made an exception! Rebecca Dotterer chaired the event, along with help from Nancy Olmstead, Diana Wrisley, Carolyn Tupper, Billy Ray Davis, Allison, Chris and Juli Calhoun, Ann Miller and many others. There were just so many wonderful helpers, it is hard to name them all in this column. (See note from Rebecca Dotterer in this issue.) Please know how much we appreciate you… you helped make for an incredible party! I stood in the back corner for a couple of minutes and took in all the camaraderie and laughter. At that moment, I knew this was one of those perfect parties! I overheard SAYRA members saying that CSC had taken this elegant and enjoyable party to a whole new level. SAYRA member John Slater from Webster, NC, wrote our Commodore, Pete Olmstead, the following: “As a long-time attendee at SAYRA and US Sailing meetings, I’ve attended dozens of yacht club receptions, but none of them compared with the one you folks put on for SAYRA!” Thanks to all who were part of this great night for CSC. That says it all! Our next meeting is March 10th. We have a wonderful group, so please plan to attend. Happy March and happy sailing! ~JanJanJanJan

Steve & Verd Cunningham Visit South Pacific

“We took an amazing trip to the South Pacific last November and spent 16 days on a small ship for an adventure cruise. We boarded in Tahiti and traveled west about 3000 miles ending in Fiji. Along the way we stopped to explore numerous small islands and atolls, many of which tourists never see. Few of the islands had a suitable place to anchor much less a harbor or pier so we got to shore in inflatable zodiacs frequently making ‘wet’ land-ings on beaches or reefs.

“The natives were very welcoming entertaining us with music, dance and feasts of local fare. They were as interested in us and where we were from as we were of them. There were only 50 passengers with about 85 crew. Truly a trip of a lifetime!” ~Steve

“While exploring the island of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands we happened upon the local sailing club.” Photo by Verd

“Palmerston atoll, also in the Cook Islands. You are looking at 2/3 of the residents on this island and they all descend from one William Masters who settled here in the 1863 with his three wives. Palmerston is a favorite stop for blue-water cruisers traversing the South Pacific. (You can see our ship, the Clipper Odyssey, in the distance ‘drifting’ outside of the reef.)”

< “A more primitive sailing craft found on the island of Fulaga which is in Fiji’s South-ern Lau Group.”

Editor’s note: Steve and Verd sent these pictures in glorious color. We hated to push the “gray scale” button. <sigh>

New Member Application: Isaac White – Sponsored by Thomas Kelly. He and his wife Carrie Ann would like the opportunity to continue their interest in sailing and be a part of the sailing community. Isaac is employed with Mutual of Omaha and Carrie with Time Warner Cable.

Congratulations to: Linda and Tommy Tapp on the birth of their twins! The babies arrived Tuesday morning, February 10. Thomas Townsend Tapp, Jr. 5 lbs. 3 oz. 19 inches tall. Katherine Ruth Tapp 6 lbs. 1 oz. 19 inches tall.

. < Young Clayton Moore poses with the giant storks that officially announced the arrival of the Tapp twins to the neighborhood. He assists his mother, who supervises stork flights in the Columbia area. Passages: We extend our sympathy to the family of Bob Fellers a past member of CSC. He was a local Archi-tect who joined CSC in 1974 and sailed a Catalina 27. Keep me posted! Jamie.

Sailing News ‘n Notes

The LMYRA sailing season has started out with a bang. First we had an awesome turnout for our Spring skippers meeting. At the meeting the following slate of officers were elected to take us through the 2009 year: Steve Szymanski – Commodore, Jan Jernigan – Vice Commodore, Beth Mathias – Rear Commodore, Monica Szymanski – Secretary, and Bill Grant – Treasurer. We also registered boats for the spring series. The turnout was better than expected with an excellent group of 50 boats. I have three sailors that I need to thank for helping me reach several goals set by LMYRA for this year. The first is Aaron Kozloski. He has developed a new website for LMYRA that is the talk of all the sailors. No longer will we have to rely on costly mailings. Also, the site contains all the information that we have been trying to convey to the LMYRA members but didn’t have a mechanism to accomplish it. The second person is Steve Rose. He has donated a computer and software to LMYRA so we can speed up the race result process. The computer is located at Colum-bia Sailing Club and should allow us to get the results out for the races by the afternoon of the race. And finally but not least I would like to thank Dick Dommel. Not only does he update our sailing instructions each series, but he cleaned out the small boat house where the race equipment is stored. He also high pressure cleaned the building inside and out. With a little paint on workday the house should be in great shape. Thank you guys for a job well done. Speaking of sailors stepping up. I still need sailors to help with race committee for the Spring Series. Just drop me an email at [email protected] and I will be glad to get you on the water. Lake Murray is an exciting place to sail with lots of sailing activities. Two events that you should not miss are the Tommy Whiteside Regatta on March 28 & 29 and SailFest on April 25. The Tommy Whiteside Memorial Regatta is a two day event held at the Columbia Sailing Club that raises a lot of money for a local charity while entertaining the sailors on and off the water. The second regatta is SailFest sponsored by Lake Murray Sailing Club. It is a one day event highlighted with a single island race for LMYRA type boats. If you have ever wanted to travel to a regatta, this is the perfect way to do it without having to trailer your boat. You can just sail over to the club. When I get the Notices of Race for these two regattas, I will post them on the LMYRA website. Mark them on your calendar. Let’s have a good turnout and have some fun.

See you on the water…...Hootie

Your editor is trying to organize some of CSC’s historical photographs to pass along to future generations. This view of the club’s ONLY DOCK brought back a flood of memories. It’s a keen reminder of how far CSC has come since its founding 52 years ago. The floating docks began to go into the water in 1960-’61, but prior to that small boats were beached or hauled out on trailers, and larger ones were moored. The idea of developing a back cove facility stayed on the back burner for many years. The main problem with that first dock was it had to be moved by a gang of members every time the water level changed. This helped in-spire progress on the construction of floating docks. Needless to say, maintenance expenses were less in those day. :- )

We spotted a report in the London Times about Dee Caffari, the first woman in the world to sail around the world in both di-rections all by herself. This British sailor spent 99 days at sea. She reached the finishing line at the Vendée Globe Yacht race in sixth place on February 16. This was followed by her entry in to the book of world records for being the first woman to sail solo to and fro around the world. "My goal was to set the double world first and I have done it. It's quite a numb feeling now but here I am, the first

woman to sail solo, non-stop both ways around the world. You can't buy a feeling like this," said Ms. Caffari. She limped across the finish line of the Vendée Globe in Les Sables d’Olonne with the mainsail on Aviva held together with glue. “The mainsail constantly caused me concern,” she said. You just have to look at it to see what a dreadful state it’s in, but I managed to struggle on. I never let it get the better of me. I had an oppor-tunity here to make history, so a disintegrating mainsail wasn’t going to get in my way.” American news media have been so absorbed with the state of the economy stories like this don’t get much attention. Google Dee Caffari if you’d like to know more about this remarkable lady.

Will this inspire CSC’s talented young female sailors?

The photos above remind us how NASCAR-like advertising invaded the sailing world some time ago. Now, not only do sails get the logos and stylized text, but the HULLS get the full treatment, too.

(Anyone wanna buy an ad on our Sunfish?)

The Telltale 1 Myrtle Court

Columbia, SC 29205

Foto Flashback Courtesy, Dick Dommel

This photo was in the archives of the Wateree Sailing Club in Camden for ages. The image came into Dick Dommel’s hands and he kindly forwarded a copy to the Telltale. Unfortunately it is not dated, nor are the names of these trophy winners recorded. We believe it was in the early 1960s, and several CSCers won silver that weekend on Lake Wateree. Jack and Jessie Helms appear at far left. Ed Bailey (Commodore, 1961), and John Wrisley (Commodore, 1962) had a good weekend, too. We haven’t identified everybody, so if you can help...e-mail us.
