LESSON ONE: DIALOGUE

1 READER #1: Welcome to our program! When learning any foreign

language, one of the first things that you will have to

learn is how to use numbers. Today we will practice

simple counting and learn how to tell time.

2 READER #2: Numbers are a big part of everyday life. Let’s learn how

to count to 10. We will use examples so you can follow

along.

over here, you can see my pigs. I have two pigs.

8 READER #1: I love my horses. I used to only have two horses, but

then my wife wanted one more. Now I have three horses.

9 READER #2: I see some ducks over there. How many ducks do you have?

1 READER #1: I have four ducks! But do you know what I have more of?

Sheep!

2 READER #2: I see one, two, three, four, five sheep! There are five

sheep!

3 READER #1: Yes, and I have six dogs to herd them with.

4 READER #2: Dogs are very cute, but I like cats more than I like

dogs.

5 READER #1: I also have cats! Seven of them in fact! But rabbits

are cuter than cats. I have eight rabbits.

6 READER #2: Wow! It looks like you have a lot of chickens! I count a

total of nine chickens outside.

7 READER #1: Is that right? Nine chickens? I thought I had ten!

8 READER #2: Oh! I see the last one. It’s hiding behind your horses!

9 READER #1: Yes, there she is.

10 READER #2: Wow. You have so many animals! Thank you so much for

giving us a tour of your farm!

Page 6: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-6. LESSON THREE: WORKING WITH NUMBERS

Answer the following questions to see if you were able to

follow along with the dialogue. The answers will be

listed at the end of the transcript.

11 READER #1: Do you remember all the animals that Farmer John had?

1 How many cows did Farmer John have?

2 How many horses did Farmer John have?

3 How many pigs and ducks does Farmer John have together?

4 How many chickens did Farmer John have?

5 Where was the last chicken hiding?

4 READER #1: That was good practice in counting, but there are many

ways you can practice counting at home. A common

exercise many people do before they go to sleep is to

count sheep! We know how to count to ten, and throughout

this lesson we will learn how to count to twenty.

1 READER #2: Counting sheep before you go to sleep will help you learn

your numbers and will make it easier to fall asleep. On

the topic of sleep, let’s listen to an essay called,

“Stop Counting Sheep and Get Some Sleep.” Pay attention

to the numbers used, for a quiz after you listen.

Page 7: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-7. 2 READER #1: Americans lead busy lives. Busy often cut back on sleep.

But sleeping only 5 or 6 hours a night can be unhealthy.

Studies say that adults need at least 7 or 8 hours of

sleep. Getting less than 7 hours of sleep can make it

harder to work, and increase risk for medical problems

such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

3 READER #2: What if you’re trying to sleep, but can’t fall asleep, or

wake up still feeling tired? Coffee and cigarettes,

which contain caffeine and nicotine, large meals or

exercise right before sleep, all make it harder to get a

good night’s sleep. For as many as 12 million Americans,

the problem may be a sleep disorder called sleep apnea.

3 READER #1: Sleep apnea makes it harder to breathe while sleeping.

When patients with sleep apnea stop breathing, they wake

up, sometimes hundreds of times a night. The result is

really bad sleep.

1 READER #2: Anyone can have sleep apnea. If you often feel tired

even if you are think you have slept, it might be a good

idea to see a doctor.

2 READER #1: Treatments are available and can greatly improve your

quality of life. If you don’t have sleep apnea, but

still find yourself counting sheep, try the following

tips:

Page 8: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-8. 3 READER #2: Avoid coffee and cigarettes. The caffeine in coffee will

remain in your body for 6 to 8 hours, so stop drinking

coffee after lunch. If you really need to wake up, try

taking a brisk walk outside. Being outside in 30 to 60

minutes of sunlight per day can help you sleep better.

4 READER #1: Don’t take naps after 3 p.m. Late afternoon naps will

make it more difficult to sleep later.

5 READER #2: Take a hot bath before bed. The water will lower your

body temperature, making it easier to fall asleep.

Keeping your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help.

6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to

wind down with a book or relaxing music. Keep TV and

computers out of the bedroom, which will keep you awake.

If you find that you can’t fall asleep, don’t lie awake

in bed. Instead, try to find a quiet activity to do for

20 minutes, then try again.

LESSON FOUR: LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Answer the following questions to see if you were able to

follow along with the dialogue. The answers will be

listed at the end of the transcript.

1 How many hours should an adult sleep at night?

Page 9: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-9.

2 How many millions of Americans have bad sleep, perhaps

due to sleep apnea?

3 Sleeping after what time in the afternoon can make it

hard to sleep at night?

4 Walking outside in how many minutes of sunshine can help

in sleeping later?

5 Instead of lying awake in bed do a quiet activity for how

many minutes?

LESSON FIVE: COUNTING TO 20

1 READER #2: There were a lot of numbers bigger than 10 in that essay.

Let’s review how to count to 10, and then count onwards

to 20.

2 READER #1: Counting to ten: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,

eight, nine, ten.

1 READER #2: In daily life you will often need to use numbers bigger

than 10. Here are the numbers between 10 and 20, with

examples of how to use them.

2 READER #1: Eleven. Football teams have 11 players on the field.

3 READER #2: Twelve. There are 12 eggs in a dozen.

4 READER #1: Thirteen. Many people consider Friday the 13th to be an

unlucky day.

Page 10: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-10. 3 READER #2: Fourteen. There are 14 days in two weeks. You will

learn more about weeks in the next section.

4 READER #1: Fifteen. In Latin American cultures, girls celebrate

their coming of age at 15 years old. This is called a

Quinceanera.

5 READER #2: Sixteen. Sweet 16s are coming of age parties for

Americans and Canadians.

6 READER #1: Seventeen. The United Nations has 17 global goals.

7 READER #2: Eighteen. Americans are legally adults at 18 years old.

8 READER #1: Nineteen. Nineteen is the last year that people are

considered “teenagers”.

9 READER #2: Twenty. A picture of President Andrew Jackson appears on

the $20 dollar bill.

1 READER #1: There you have it: one, two, three, four, five, six,

seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen,

fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen,

nineteen, twenty. Now we will have an example of how to

use these numbers. Please pay attention during the

following essay, and be ready for a quiz afterwards!

LESSON SIX: LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Page 11: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-11. 2 READER #1: According to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA)

2015 American Eye-Q survey, 41% of parents say their kids

spend 3 or more hours per day using digital devices, and

66% of kids have their own smartphone or tablet.

3 READER #2: Children’s have begun to use digital technology as an

important part of their lives in both the classroom and

at home. Some believe that by 2028, many schools will

rely heavily on computers for instruction. There may be

even more usage of screens for learning for young

children.

4 READER #1: But there are concerns about childrens’ health. Many of

these devices are new. The long-term effects on young

eyes are not yet known. Most of today’s common devices

give off high-energy light. This may affect children’s

vision and even age their eyes.

5 READER #2: Early research shows that overexposure to blue light may

worsen eye strain and discomfort. It is possible that it

could lead to serious conditions later in life, such as

blindness.

1 READER #1: The first step in taking care of children’s eyes is for

parents to schedule an eye exam for children at the

beginning of each school year. Children have free access

to eye exams, thanks to the Pediatric Essential Health

Page 12: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

Benefit in the Affordable Care Act, through age 18.

Children are recommended to have an eye exam by soon

after 6 months of age, again at age 3 and annually

thereafter.

2 READER #2: With so much time spent on digital devices, it is

important for parents to watch for signs of eye strain in

children. Symptoms can include burning, itchy or tired

eyes, headaches, fatigue, loss of focus, blurred vision,

double vision or head and neck pain.

3 READER #1: To protect their eyes while using digital devices,

parents should encourage children to take frequent visual

breaks by practicing the “20-20-20 rule”: when using

technology or doing near work, every 20 minutes, take a

20-second break, and view something 20 feet away.

LESSON SIX: EXERCISE

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-13. 1 READER #2: There were a lot of words that related to time in that

essay. Let’s go over the words that relate to time, also

known as units of time.

2 READER #1: Second. The smallest unit of time we commonly use.

3 READER #2: Minute. There are 60 seconds in a minute.

4 READER #1: Hour. There are 60 minutes in an hour.

5 READER #2: Day. There are 24 hours in a day.

6 READER #1: Week. There are 7 days in a week.

7 READER #2: Month. There are 4 weeks in a month.

8 READER #1: Year. There are 12 months in a year.

9 READER #2: All these vocabulary words relate to time. Knowing how

to tell time is very important. Let’s review some common

words you may hear people use in talking about the time

of day.

10 READER #1 Dawn. Is a period of time before sunrise, when it is

still dark outside.

11 READER #2 Sunrise. Is the instant that the edge of the sun is

visible over the horizon. Once the sun is “up” as we

say, daylight gets brighter quickly.

1 READER #1 Morning. Morning is the time between midnight and noon.

Page 14: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-14. 2 READER #2 Noon. Noon is a short time – when the clock is exactly

12:00 p.m.

3 READER #1 Afternoon. The afternoon is the time after 12:00 p.m.

Many people consider the afternoon to be the part of the

day when people are often at work during weekdays,

usually until about 5:00 p.m.

4 READER #2 Evening. Evening is usually a period between about 6

p.m. and midnight, the time of day people eat their last

meals before sleeping.

5 READER #1 Sunset. Sunset is the time of the evening when the sun

falls below the horizon, and twilight begins.

6 READER #2 Twilight. Twilight can occur two times in a day. It

occurs between sunset and dusk, and between dawn and

sunrise. During twilight, the sun is not above the

horizon, but there is some light to see.

7 READER #1 Dusk. Dusk is the darkest time of the night.

8 READER #2 Night. Generally people refer to the hours between about

8 p.m. and 4 a.m., during the darkest hours, as night.

9 READER #1 Midnight. Like noon, midnight is a very short time – at

precisely 12:00 a.m.

10 READER #2 Yesterday. The day before the current day.

11 READER #1 Today. The present day.

Page 15: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-15. 1 READER #2 Tomorrow. The day that occurs after today.

2 READER #1 New year. January 1st, the first day of a year.

3 READER #2: We will now learn learn how to use these words is to hear

them in a conversation. The following is a dialogue

about Fran and Nancy’s day.

LESSON EIGHT: DIALOGUE

4 READER #1: Hello Fran! How are you?

5 READER #2: I’m doing well, Nancy. How about you?

6 READER #1: I’m doing great. I’m a little tired though. I did a lot

this week.

7 READER #2: What did you do this week?

8 READER #1: Well, yesterday I talked to my mother on the phone in the

morning, from 9 o’clock to almost noon!

9 READER #2: You talked to your mom for three hours? That’s a long

time!

10 READER #1: Yes, and after we ended the call, I went to lunch. But

the busiest part of my day was that evening. At 6 p.m.,

I made dinner for my the 5 people in my family.

11 READER #2: Wow. That sounds like a busy day. Yesterday was very

lazy for me. I watched television for five hours!

12 READER #1: Watching that much television is not good for your eyes!

Page 16: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-16. 1 READER #2: I know, but there were several shows I wanted to watch.

You said today was busy too. What did you do today?

2 READER #1: Today I woke up at 5 a.m. and went on a run. Then I

took the kids to school at 7 a.m., but there was a lot of

traffic, so we were late. At noon, I worked in my

garden. My garden is very large, and has 13 different

kinds of flowers. What did you do today?

3 READER #2: Today I went to work. I work on a farm. I take care of

all 4 kinds of animals on the farm. It’s a lot of work,

but I really love it. Today I got up at 4 in the morning

before sunrise, and I was working on the farm until

sunset, at 7 p.m. at night. Most farmers work from

sunrise to sunset.

4 READER #1: Wow! That sounds like a long day. What is your plan for

tomorrow?

5 READER #2: Tomorrow? I am going to go to work again. I have to

work six days a week! That’s why, when I have a day off,

I take a rest in front of the television for so long!

6 READER #1: I do not envy you! Tomorrow I will be working more in my

garden. You should come by if you have time! I’d love

to show you all of my flowers.

Page 17: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

tomorrow then!

8 READER #1: Perfect! What time do you think you will come over?

1 READER #2: When I am finished with my work. Does 8 p.m. in the

evening work for you?

2 READER #1: Yes! See you then, Fran!

LESSON NINE: EXERCISES

1 How long did Nancy speak with her mother on the

telephone?

2 How long does Fran normally work?

3 How many kinds of flowers does Nancy have in her garden?

4 What time will Fran meet Nancy?

5 What do you think of the time that Fran will meet with

Nancy? Does this sound like a good time to visit someone

to view their flower garden?

LESSON TEN: ESSAY, LISTENING COMPREHENSION

3 READER #1: That conversation used a lot of the vocabulary we have

been learning about numbers and time. The following

essay will also use the vocabulary we have been learning.

See if you recognize any of the words. This essay is

titled “A New Alarm Clock”.

Page 18: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-18. 4 READER #2: For most people, a good morning would be waking up to the

warm sun rising in through the bedroom window, and the

sound of the birds from a nearby tree. Sadly, this is

not the case for Michael. Michael is a part-time student

that works late nights as a construction worker.

1 READER #1: Michael gets home around 2 a.m. every night, and goes to

bed as soon as possible. His classes start at 10 a.m.

However, for the past week, Michael has had a new "alarm

clock" that he cannot control.

2 READER #2: It is a very loud bird that lives in the tree outside of

Michael's new home.

3 READER #1: Each morning, the bird begins singing at exactly sunrise

– often before 6 a.m. It does not stop until late into

the night. Most city birds are very quiet, but this bird

is very loud. After one week of losing sleep due to the

noise, Michael felt he had to do something.

4 READER #2: "Go away!" he screamed out his window. When that didn't

work, he started throwing things at the tree to try to

scare the bird away. This only made the bird get even

louder! Finally, Michael called his local Animal

Control, and requested to get someone to remove the bird

from the area.

Page 19: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-19. 5 READER #1: "We can't do that," replied the Animal Control

Specialist. "Birds are a valued feature of North

America's wildlife and are protected by many laws. You

should consider yourself lucky to have one so close to

home. Just enjoy the beautiful sounds of nature."

6 READER #2: Furious, Michael hung up the phone, and threw himself on

the couch, and fell into a deep sleep for the first time

all week. But only five minutes later, he awoke to a

loud "caw-caw!" coming from outside.

LESSON ELEVEN: ESSAY - USING TIME AND DATE IN AMERICA

1 READER #1 You need to use numbers every day in America. But

sometimes, using numbers when telling the time and date

can be confusing.

2 READER #2 One of the confusing ways numbers can be used is in

something you will use everyday – the calendar.

3 READER #1 America uses the Gregorian calendar. This is also known

as the “Western” calendar or the “Christian” calendar.

But the way America uses its calendar confuses many

immigrants.

4 READER #2 In most countries, the Western calendar that is used is

also known as the “British” calendar. The British

Page 20: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-20.

calendar is read, from left to right, in units of days,

months, and years.

5 READER #1 For example, people might say 05/06/07, and in British

usage, this would be the 5h day of June, 2007. Many

countries use this system.

6 READER #2 In the British calendar system, the first unit is the day

unit. It changes – every day. The second unit is the

month unit. It changes, but not so often as the day

unit. It will change 12 times in one year. The last

unit is the year unit. It changes only once in one year.

Thus, the calendar might be thought of as “big, medium,

small.”

1 READER #1 However, this is not true in the United States. In the

United States, the calendar usage goes from months, to

days, to years. This often confuses new immigrants to

the United States.

2 READER #2 Instead of a logical “big, medium, small” organization,

the calendar goes from “medium, to big, to small.” Many

people think, “this does not make sense!” However, this

is the common usage in the United States.

3 READER #1 So when an American sees the calendar listed as 05/06/07,

they would interpret this date as May 6, 2007. It is an

month later! What if you had been invited to a party on

Page 21: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-21.

05/06/07 and did not realize the date? You would miss

the party by a month!

4 READER #2 This is why it can be useful to write out the name of the

month, so there is no confusion. Instead of writing

05/06, write out, May 6, or June 5, so you and your

American friends aren’t confused!

LESSON TWELVE: ESSAY, DAYS AND MONTHS IN AMERICA

5 READER #1 Also in the United States, the days of the week in a

month begin on Sunday. Many calendars will run from

Sunday to Saturday, although some prefer a calendar that

starts on Monday.

1 READER #2: The first day of the week in America is Sunday. On

Sunday is when many people go to church.

2 READER #1: The second day of the week is Monday. Monday is when

people start a work or school week.

3 READER #2: The third day of the week is Tuesday.

4 READER #1: The fourth day of the week is Wednesday, also known as

“Hump Day” as it is in the middle of the work week.

5 READER #2: The fifth day of the week is Thursday.

6 READER #1: The sixth day of the week is Friday. This is the last

9 READER #2: The twelfth month is December. Christmas is on December

LESSON THIRTEEN: LISTENING COMPREHENSION

10 READER#1 When you see dates written in a newspaper or at the bank

or the post office, remember that Americans will write

the month first. Let’s hear a dialogue with this

scenario.

1 READER #2 Good morning. I’d like to make an appointment to see Dr.

Smith this week.

2 READER #1 Hello. I’m sorry, but the Christmas holiday is this

week. Most of our staff will take off during the week of

Christmas, and they will not return until after the New

Year.

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-24. 3 READER #2 Oh. I did not know that. When is the earliest that I

could see Dr. Smith?

4 READER #1 I can make an appointment for you on the 4th day of

January.

5 READER #2 Yes, please. I would like to see Dr. Smith then.

6 READER #1 Certainly sir. I can schedule that in the morning, or in

the afternoon. Which would you like?

7 READER #2 What time is Dr. Smith available in the morning?

8 READER #1 She is available at 11:30 a.m.

9 READER #2 I see. Actually, that is almost noon. What time is Dr.

Smith available in the afternoon?

10 READER #1 At 2 p.m.

11 READER #2 I will take 2 p.m., please.

12 READER #1 Certainly. Let me write you out an appointment card.

1 READER #2 What is an appointment card?

2 READER #1 It’s just a card that lists the time and date of your

appointment. And it includes our telephone number, in

case you are late, or have to change the appointment.

Here you are.

ESL Lesson Transcript Numbers T-25. 3 READER #2 Thank you. … Ah, miss? I don’t understand this

appointment card. I thought you had scheduled me for an

appointment on January 4.

4 READER #1 That’s correct. On January 4.

5 READER #2 This card says my appointment is on the first day of

April, though.

6 READER #1 What? No, do you see here? It shows that the

appointment is on 01/04. That means January 4.

7 READER #2 Oh, I see. And I am appointment number 14 on the day?

8 READER #1 Oh, no. You will be the third appointment.

9 READER #2 Then why does it say 14:00 on my card?

10 READER #1 That’s just military time, sir. It means 2 o’clock p.m.

In military time, you add 12 to hours after noon. So 14

hundred hours is two hours past 12 o’clock noon.

11 READER #2 Ah, thank you – it seems that even the date and time can

be confusing!

LESSON NINE: ESSAY – DON’T LET CHORES CREATE STRESS

1 READER #1 A medical study found that people who are responsible for

the most chores in the home often feel the most stress.

2 READER #2 Here are a few tips that can help ease the stress: Step

One is to plan ahead. If you plan your meals a week in

Page 26: Y CLUB RLEANS R ESL PRO - WRBH your bedroom at a cool temperature may also help. 6 READER #1: Try to relax before going to bed. Give yourself time to wind down with a book or relaxing

advance, then you can make only one trip to the grocery

store for everything on your list. Multiple shopping

trips quickly add up.

3 READER #1 Step Two: Divide and conquer. Divide housework into many

steps, rather than doing it all at once. Do housework

one day at a time or one task at a time. You can avoid

doing too much on Saturday by spending 30 minutes a day

on different chores. For example, vacuum on Tuesdays,

dust on Wednesdays and clean the bathrooms on Thursdays.

4 READER #2: Step Three: Simplify errands. Do you hate the weekly

trip to the store for cleaning supplies? You might be

able to save time and money by shopping online. Try to

have big, bulky items and other items shipped directly to

your door.

5 READER #1: Step Four: Everyone Helps. Get your family to do chores

with you. Let older children can help prepare dinner in

the evening, and give younger children simple tasks such

as helping set the table. Other simple tasks for

children include making their bed and putting away toys

at in the night.
