“Pause a little, leave behind the unrest and commotion that fill the soul with bit-ter feelings which never get us any-where. . .Pause from this compulsion to a fast-paced life that scatters, divides and ultimately destroys time with family, with friends, with children, with grandpar-

ents, and time as a gift...time with God. . .Pause for a little while, refrain from the deafening noise that weakens and confuses our hearing, that makes us forget the fruitful and creative power of silence.” Excerpts from Pope Francis’ Ash Wednesday Homily

The 2018 Mass Intention book is available. Mass Intentions are not limited to the deceased; however, families are limited to five per year to ensure that all parishion-ers have an opportunity to request a Mass.

THE MANY FACES OF STEWARDSHIP AT SMG

Bernice Kenkel and her husband Bob both grew up in Iowa, raised in Catholic families. Bernice has one brother, while Bob is one of ten kids. Bernice wasn't raised on a farm like Bob, but she had plenty of aunts and uncles who had farms, so every summer she'd stay with them... not to work, mind you, just to play with her young cousins.

Bernice and Bob met in early 1956 while they were attend-ing Iowa State. They were both serving as babysitters dur-ing Mass at the Newman Center on campus, and began dating after that. In July, 1956 Bob graduated and went to work in Peoria, IL. Nine months later he was called into the Army at Fort Sill, OK, while Bernice continued her senior year studies at Iowa State.

They were married in June, 1957 during Bob's 2-week leave from the Army, but he had to immediately return to Fort Sill after a very brief honeymoon. Over the summer, Bernice finished her degree in Home Economics Education, then took the train to join him in Oklahoma.

Babies came pretty quickly... 5 babies in less than 5 yrs, followed by 2 more, and finally, ten years later... a bonus! Eight kids altogether!

Bob's jobs led them to move around a lot. Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina, Arizona, then New Jersey. Finally, in 1990, he retired and they moved to Ari-zona for good. At that time, their youngest was in 5th grade.

Most of her life up to that point had been focused on raising her family, but now that Bob was retired and most of the kids were out of the house, Bernice became interested in volunteering. She started fundraising for various causes, including "New Song", which was a place for grieving chil-dren to find healing.

Later, Bernice got more involved with older people who needed help getting to the store or doctor, and she currently helps out as a Duet volunteer. She also serves as a Eu-charistic Minister and is involved in the Pastoral Care Minis-try where she brings the Eucharist to homebound individu-als who cannot get to Mass. She says she gets more from it than they do. She and Bob also serve in the Marriage Preparation ministry working with young couples consider-ing marriage.

On top of her other volunteering, she and Bob are constant-ly helping out with their children and families. Bernice says she's so grateful for her religion, husband and family. She and Bob have been married for 60 years and have 17 grandkids, though no great-grandkids yet. It seems that ser-vice is at the heart of their marriage, and it has produced much fruit.

In this time of Lent it is a perfect time to remember those who have little or no food and resources. Please stop by the west door of the Church this weekend to pick up care packages that you may give to someone in

need. “Matthew 25:35-36”
