Strengthening Our Cities: Enhancing Urban Resilience and Water Efficiency
This impact has made disaster planning a major priority in New York and other cities around the globe.
Hurricane Sandy devastated the entire east coast of the United States – causing severe flooding and damage, as well as considerable loss of life.

• Urban Resilience
• Water Efficiency
Two of the largest challenges facing our industry: Urban Resilience – helping cities become more resilient to flooding and drought
Water Efficiency – helping cities improve their water system efficiency

Flood and Drought
Population Growth
Climate Change
By 2050 – 75% of the worlds population will live in cities.
Population growth, coupled with the effects of climate change, magnify the effects of flooding & drought on our cities. Flooding is the more destructive threat, affecting more than 200
million people in 2012 and causing $40B in losses. Drought is the second biggest disaster affecting cities… impacting energy, food, and industrial production. Addressing flooding & drought requires investments of more than
$100 billion annually.

Underinvestment Inefficient Water Infrastructure
Often, more than 30% of water is lost during the water cycle
before it’s delivered where it’s needed, leaking both liters AND kilowatts in the process.
In the next 20 years, nearly $700 billion is needed to upgrade the water and wastewater infrastructure in the US alone.
In addition, the UN estimates that the total annual spending on
water infrastructure by developing countries must double, to $180 billion.
In Xylem’s Value of Water Index survey, nearly 90% of Americans said that water infrastructure in the U.S. needs reform

Improve Water System Efficiency
Become Resilient to Flooding and Drought
Xylem is a $3.8 billion company operating in more than 150 countries.
We span the entire water cycle. This breadth and depth provides us with a powerful value proposition: to provide comprehensive, water solutions to our customers around the globe.
Our experience enables us to create solutions that are smarter,
more effective and more efficient. Today we are applying these solutions to strengthen our cities.
In particular, we are focused on helping cities improve their water system efficiency & become more resilient to flooding & drought

Case #1Singapore PUB: Optimizing Water System Efficiency
Water System Efficiency
Most of you know PUB for its successful water reuse program –
focused on creating ‘new water.’ Xylem has been working with PUB to make ‘new water’ – ‘smart water’.
Working with PUB and our partner, Visenti, we are implementing an end-to-end, real-time monitoring solution to help manage energy consumption, water quality and leakage detection.
Our state-of-art technology and data analysis are helping identify issues like leaking pipes and contaminated water and also provide insight into demand and consumption to optimize water operations and usage.

Case #2New York City: Urban Resilience
Urban resiliency…resiliency to flooding, in particular. Our approach focuses on three areas: • Early warning systems: Using weather and tidal change data to
improve disaster forecasts
• Preparation: Pre-deploying equipment and resources to handle an imminent event
• Planning: Working with urban planners and community leaders to build the physical and social infrastructure needed to reduce risk
Our breadth and depth of experience across the water cycle enabled us to provide a comprehensive approach to Sandy that helped thousands of people and businesses.

Together, We Have the Power to Solve Water
As water leaders, we have the power to help the world address the growing water challenges we face.
The power to partner with innovators and governments.. to push boundaries, and to build smarter and more efficient water systems.
The power to help our communities become more resilient to major disasters
The power to help build a world where water is safer and more abundant… and build a brighter future for our children, and for children around the world.
