WELCOMING ADDRESSES

Welcoming address by the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt Dr. Reiner Haseloff

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

The federal state Saxony-Anhalt has always been a home for outstanding researchers, but scientific structures, specialised fields and personnel were subjected to a comprehensive reorganisation process following the reunification of Germany. Currently, the scientific location Saxony-Anhalt can hold its own against other regions in Germany and abroad. Two universities both with medical faculties form the core alongside four universities of applied sciences: all these institutions are highly attractive for researchers and students alike. Numerous students from abroad are also keen to study in our federal state; in 2015, a total of around 55 000 students were registered at universities in Saxony-Anhalt.

Science and research are however not an end in themselves, but additionally benefit social and economic progress. Economic growth is increasingly determined by the augmentation in the creation of value fuelled by education and research. Major corporations have their own extensive research departments, but our economy is chiefly shaped by small and medium-sized companies who are unable to afford their own R&D departments. 95 % of these companies have fewer than 20 employees which makes cooperation between firms and universities, universities of applied sciences and non-university institutes all the more essential. Our federal state has already developed a healthy structure within the non-university sector, and major research societies are involved in collaborations with numerous institutes.

The dovetailing of economic and scientific sectors is a key focus of our federal government. Our objective is to encourage innovation and increase competitive ability in Saxony-Anhalt. Numerous companies are already working together in networks and clusters among themselves and in collaboration with research institutions, but there is still potential for further growth. This is why we would like to progress further along our adopted path.

Against this background, the new federal government has committed itself to the promotion of this cause. We aim to continue our support for top-class research and build further on our existing strengths. This will help us not only to retain young highly qualified experts already established here, but also attract new specialists to our federal state.

It is a good sign that a gastroenterological-microbiological interactive congress with top-level international participation is being held in Magdeburg. I wish all participants great success during the course of this event.

Dr. Reiner HaseloffMinister President of the federal state Saxony-Anhalt

WELCOMING ADDRESSES Welcoming address by the Mayor of the city of Magdeburg Dr. Lutz Tümper

Dear scientists, dear friends and clinical researcher,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the capital of Sachsen-Anhalt! Magdeburg is a lively city with many students and a continuously expanding landscape of science and education. Events like the congress of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group are an exciting occasion for this evolution. An important contribution to the promotion of Magdeburg for many years has come from research on gastrointestinal and liver diseases at the University Clinic of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases under the direction of Prof. Peter Malfertheiner. His engagement to contribute to Magdeburg as a location of research and to bring a world-class scientific congress to the city is highly appreciated.

I wish you an outstanding meeting with exciting presentations of new scientific data, vivid exchanges and a wonderful stay in the “Otto City” of Magdeburg.

Yours,

Dr. Lutz TrümperMayor of the city of MagdeburgOberbürgermeister der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg

Welcoming address by the President of the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan

Dear Delegates, Scientists and Clinicians,

I would like to welcome you to our city on the occasion of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group – EHMSG XXIXth International Workshop on Helicobacter and Microbiota in Inflammation and Cancer.

We are proud to learn that you are travelling from all around the world to meet here in Magdeburg for the exchange of the most recent developments in basic science and clinical translation of one of the major microbial threats for human health. Furthermore you will be able to discuss new opportunities for the maintenance of human health through the intriguing interaction of gut microbiota with their hosts. The University of Magdeburg has a long tradition in engineering, medical and natural sciences and is ambitiously anticipating continuous growth in the future. It is our vision to keep the doors of the Otto-von-Guericke University open for students and academicians from all over the world.

We wish you pleasant and inspiring days in Magdeburg and hope you will take important new information and memorable events back home with you.

All the best for you.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens StrackeljanPresident of the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg

WELCOMING ADDRESSES

Welcoming address by the President of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study GroupProf. Dr. Peter Malfertheiner

Dear Delegates, Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to the XXIXth International Workshop of the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group, welcome to Magdeburg. After 3 decades of intensive research on H. pylori, the persisting “intruder” of the human gastric mucosa, we are still facing the challenge to unravel many facets of this intriguing bug and to optimize the management of patients carrying the infection. H. pylori is the opener of a new genus that led to the discovery of other Helicobacters in the whole animal world.

H. pylori has pioneered the field of gut microbiota and their numerous functions in health and disease and thus may well be considered “the conductor of the gut microbiota orchestra”. Gut microbiota have become the extension line of our common scientific interests.

We feel honored by your participation in this event, grateful to you for providing new insights and for inspiring, fruitful discussions to nourish the enthusiasm in this exciting field.

We are proud to host this event in Magdeburg, the city with a long history of important cultural and scientific traditions. One famous example: the Magdeburg hemispheres, designed by the German scientist and mayor of Magdeburg Otto von Guericke, demonstrating the principle in physics. The hemispheres of Magdeburg may serve as a symbol and incentive to find easy solutions for seemingly difficult scientific tasks. Scientific progress needs to be conveyed to the general public, therefore -and for the first time of our EHMSG congresses- we have arranged for a public awareness event with the Healthy Stomach Initiative, presenting a walkable stomach outside of our EHMSG congress venue.

We wish you a pleasant stay and hope you will be able to take good scientific and social memories with you. Yours,

Peter MalfertheinerPresident of EHMSG

PresentationsAll presenters should hand in their electronic presentation to the technician of the according lecture room in a break at least 1 hour before your talk either via USB-Memory Stick or DVD-Rom (30 minutes for talks in the first morning sessions).

Due to EACCME regulations, authors are requested to disclose possible conflicts of interest on the first slide.

A conflict of interest is any situation in which a speaker or immediate family members have interests, and those may cause a conflict with the current presentation. Conflicts of interest do not preclude the delivery of the talk, but should be explicitly declared. These may include financial interests (e.g. owning stocks of a related company, having received honoraria, consultancy fees), research interests (research support by grants or otherwise), organisational interests and gifts. If you have nothing to disclose, please state “I have no commercial disclosure” instead of the table.

Safety - CrimeVisitor safety is generally adequate, like in any other major European city. You can walk everywhere using common sense. Pick pocketing in heavily visited tourist zones or in public transport lines might be a concern.Unfortunately experience has shown that some basic precautionary measures should always be kept in mind in any city:- Do not carry important items like flight tickets, passports etc. with you when visiting the conference or strolling through the city, leave them in the hotel safe during your stay. Rather carry a Xerox copy of your passport or an identity card with you.- Try not to carry all documents, money, credit cards and other essential items and valuables in one bag. If it is lost or stolen, everything will be gone and might be difficult to replace on short notice, especially passports and visa to return to your country of residence.- Take off your name badge when leaving the conference venue, it will make you easily identifiable as a tourist.

Smoking PolicyThe EHMSG 2016 Workshop is a “No-smoking-Conference”.

StaffIf you should have any questions, the congress staff will be pleased to help you.
