Introduction

Pavement-marking retroreflectorization is accomplished through the use of glass beads partially

embedded on the surface of the marking binder material. Glass beads play the most important

role in pavement-marking retroreflectivity. Markings without beads are virtually useless at night.

The bead returns light from a headlamp back to a driver, as shown:



Common uses

Glass beads provide enhanced retro-reflectivity to road marking materials.

The glass beads are suitable for all types of road line marking coatings including

thermoplastic, chlorinated rubber (CR) paint, cold plastic road marking paints,

water-based road marking paints, solvent based road marking paings, the glass

beads provide high retro-reflectivity which makes the road marking more visible to

the driver at night.

When a car's headlight beam shines on a striping which integrates glass beads,

the striping seems to light up and gets much better visible at night. This effect is

called retroreflection.

Glass beads and road marking materials together form a retroreflective system.
