The WorkCentre 6400’s innovative print drivers were recognized with a BLI “Pick” award for “Outstanding Achievement,” Fall 2008 The WorkCentre 6400 supports the Global Print Driver and the Mobile Express Print Driver, which received a BLI “Outstanding Achievement Award” in Fall 2008.
“In our lab trial using the Xerox Global and Mobile Print Drivers, we were able to print documents on non-Xerox devices, including copier-based and printer-based models, on our test network,” said Tony Maceri, BLI’s Senior Test Technician. This flexibility lets workers print anywhere in their office, even on non-Xerox printers and copiers, with a single interface, instead of having to keep numerous print drivers installed (which is time-consuming for IT workers as well as confusing to end users).

Test conditions:
The device(s) to be tested, lab test equipment and paper are tested with daily conditions maintained between 20 and 25.6 degrees Celsius/68 and 78 degrees Farenheit and 35% to 65% RH. A4/Letter-size 80 gsm/20-lb. bond paper is used for all testing. Electricity is automatically regulated to <1% variation at 115 VAC using a Powerstat voltage regulator. Energy measurements used in Environmental Test Reports are recorded using a Yokogawa WT210 digital power meter. Devices with multiple energy level settings are set to use the lowest amount of energy for energy-save mode and/or sleep mode and to go into each mode at the shortest interval possible. The Job Stream Test conducted for BLI Environmental Reports is started from sleep mode after overnight dormancy and the running mode tests are started from idle mode.

On the WorkCentre 6400XF, users can load paper into four different paper sources (three standard drawers plus the bypass tray), so the right kind of paper is always handy when needed. For example, one drawer can hold inexpensive draft paper for most interoffice prints and copies, with high-quality letterhead loaded in a second drawer and extra-bright presentation paper stored in the third drawer. handle thick card stock, envelopes and other specialty media as needed. With a standard paper capacity of 1,500 sheets (plus the bypass tray), the WorkCentre 6400XF can handle a high volume of work without users having to stop to reload paper.
Users of the CLX-8540ND are limited to a maximum of only three paper sources (including bypass tray), which might mean users have to unload one kind of paper, then locate and load the kind of paper they need. Plus, standard paper capacity is only 520 sheets (not counting the bypass).
Feed heavier paper weights through the WorkCentre 6400XF
The WorkCentre 6400XF’s 100-sheet bypass tray can handle media weights up to 80-lb. cover stock, which comes in handy for postcards, covers, tabs and other special requirements. The bypass tray on the CLX- 8540ND can’t handle paper weights heavier than 43-lb. bond.

Comprehensive color access controls The WorkCentre 6400XF offers an extensive array of administrative controls that administrators can use to limit who has access to color print privileges, and how much access each user has. Tools include default settings and restrictions to print drivers and print queues; available mono- chrome-only print drivers; and even application driver defaults.

Save color toner by copying and printing all text in black
The WorkCentre 6400XF can be set so that in copy mode, all text outputs as black, even if the rest of the document is in color. This capability is not supported when copying on the MultiXpress CLX-8540ND.
The Black and White Only print driver
The WorkCentre 6400XF can be set up by an administrator with a Black and White Only print driver, which allows printing in black but not in color. This makes color printing available to users who need it, while limiting other workers to printing their documents in black. Permissions for the print queues can be controlled by group policy on the print server. There is no comparable black-only print driver available for the CLX-8540ND.
Better administrative utilities streamline IT workflow (and save money) A critical – and often overlooked – factor contributing to cost control is the amount of time workers spend installing, tracking and maintaining the device on the network. How to respond:
Rated engine speed is only one factor contributing to productivity. The WorkCentre 6400XF is easy to use, so workers spend less time figuring out which print driver does what function (as is the case with the CLX- 8540ND) and more time getting their jobs done. Besides, you pay dearly for that small difference in rated engine speed, with the WorkCentre 6400XF costing much less but delivering far more standard features including fax, accounting and OCR capabilities; a standard finishing unit; and a higher standard paper capacity.
Higher maximum scan resolution What the Samsung sales rep could say:
“The MultiXpress CLX-8540ND can scan images at up to 9600 x 600 dpi resolution. Resolution for the WorkCentre 6400XF is lower, with a maximum of only 2400 x 600.”
How to respond
The human eye can’t distinguish between 2400 dpi and 9600 dpi, and the difference may only be visible under magnification (if then). What’s more important is that color scan file sizes tend to be large even at lower resolutions. While you might in theory be able to scan a file with that resolution, chances are it would be difficult to transmit the file over a network because the file size would exceed maximum bandwidth limits. What will be most critical to most typical office environments is that the WorkCentre 6400XF includes scan/image software, as well as OCR and file management capability, standard, while Samsung’s SmarThru Workflow scan software is optional.
Higher maximum paper capacity What the Samsung sales rep could say:
“The MultiXpress CLX-8540ND’s maximum paper capacity of 2,720 sheets allows it to run longer than the WorkCentre 6400XF without being reloaded.”
How to respond:
Those paper upgrades don’t come cheap. The WorkCentre 6400XF includes three 500-sheet paper drawers as part of its standard feature set and it even includes a stapler-stacker finisher – all for less money than a CLX-8540ND with no finisher and a single 520-sheet paper drawer costs.
