community

“My prayer for all of us is that we’ll live out our destiny to build a com-munity in which excellence will be cel-ebrated and most importantly, the love of Jesus will be exhibited in all we do.”

This quote was found in the Principals Corner in an early edition of The Navi-gator, the official Xavier High School newsletter. Those words certainly ex-pressed how all of us who contributed our time, our sweat, our dedication and our resources to unite the area under the banner of consolidated Catholic High School felt in the fall of 1998 as Xavi-er opened its doors for the first time.

I remember that time as if it was yester-day. The expectations and the fear were equally apparent. The expectations in-cluded that we could serve the spiri-tual and academic needs of all students, serve the parishes while also providing a real boost for Catholic education in the Archdiocese and also in the state. There was, of course, real fear that it would be very difficult to bring the traditions and

spirit of Regis and LaSalle together under one roof and under one banner.

That is why our prayer was that Xavi-er would indeed be able to live out its destiny to build a community in which excellence would be celebrated and most importantly, the love of Je-sus would be exhibited in all it did. It has been ten years and it is a good time to review how we have done… so far.

To put it simply, Xavier has been highly successful. The resume of ac-complishments is long and impressive. Academic prowess, athletic success, fine arts excellence, continued growth, and community respect indicate that Xavier is successful. Frankly, though that is not what is so impressive.

What is most impressive is that it has become first and foremost a Catholic, Christian icon in the state. The school serves the parishes and the church as it is supposed to as part of the Roman Catholic Church. Prayer is the cor-nerstone of everything at the school. Service is an integral part of life in the school. At the times when things go well, God is invited, when things do not go well and pain is so evident, God is invited. It is not that the students are saints, but it does mean they un-derstand what it means to strive to be-come saint like. I am so proud how the school has become first and foremost Catholic. As strong as it is though, it

cannot and must not rest. It must re-main committed to this foundation.

The other part of my prayer ten years ago dealt with living out its destiny in which excellence is celebrated. As high as our internal expectations were, few of us could have anticipated what we were about to unleash upon the state. I remember well how a for-mer area public school superinten-dent told me early in our history that it was amazing to him how, “Xavier has become the standard by which all other schools are now measured.”

That statement sums it up about as well as is possible. Thousands of incred-ible students have made that happen. Thousands of supportive and caring parents have made that happen. Tens of thousands of committed parishioners have made that happen. Tens of thou-sands of caring alumni, including those who graduated from other Cedar Rap-ids Catholic High Schools have made that happen. Hundreds of dedicated board members have made that hap-pen. Hundreds of incredibly dedicated and talented teachers, administrators, support staff, moderators and coaches have made it happen. One God, who loves us deeply truly made it happen.

Happy Birthday Xavier!

l e g a c ya family

LaSalle, Regis, Xavier. A legacy in Catholic education in Cedar Rapids, and for Jayme Wiebold (X08) a family legacy as well.

Jayme’s grandma, Helen (Roman) Blietz (R60) attended St. Wenceslaus School through her sophomore year, when she then finished her last two years of high school at the newly opened Regis High School. She cur-rently belongs to St. Patrick’s church. Mrs. Blietz remembers having con-flicted feelings when the new high school (Regis) opened, because it was hard to leave a school she loved, but the prospect of a new school was excit-ing. She remembers the strict nuns and the disciplines they instilled, and looking back, feels this prepared her well for life after high school.

Julie (Blietz) Wiebold (L81), Jayme’s mother, attended St. Patrick grade school and LaSalle High School. Her favorite memories were of commu-nity service days spent raking leaves in the fall, in particular, assisting the developmentally disabled children at Taylor Elementary with their physical education class as a part of her Com-munity Service Class. Julie also has fond memories of playing basketball and all of the friends she made. The Wiebold family currently attends St.

Jude parish.

Jayme (X08), who came to Xavier as a sophomore has enjoyed her three years here. She often reflects that her class-mates have no idea how lucky they are to attend Xavier. Jayme enjoys the academic challenges, the small com-munity atmosphere, the many op-portunities for community service and her involvement in athletics and other groups at Xavier.

Helen, Julie, and Jayme all agree that attending Catholic schools made a positive impact on their lives in many different ways. Their family legacy within the Catholic school system is strong, built on a solid foundation of excellence in academics, and environ-ments that foster personal, and spiri-tual growth.

A display honoring families who have been a part of LaSalle, Regis, and Xavier for generations will be posted at Xavier during the month of May and will include photos of 53 Xavier seniors and high school photos of their parent(s) who graduated from LaSalle or Regis. The display demonstrates the family commitment to Catholic edu-cation and the rich history from which Xavier High School was developed.

BusinessTAKING CARE OF

Under the leadership of Dr. John Wollner and Tony Bedard, CEO Frontier Natural Products Coop, eighty-two volun-teers canvassed the business community to solicit financial support for Xavier High School. Currently area businesses have donated more than $***,*** to this year’s campaign. A strong partnership between business and education is the foundation for the success and development of our commu-nity and our young people. Thanks to the business commu-nity for their outstanding support. Special thanks goes out to the dedicated parents, grandparents, alumni, educators, and friends, who volunteered and helped make the campaign a success.

Alumni!Way To Go

In late March more than 60 local LaSalle, Regis, and Xavier alumni joined forces to help the Xavier Foundation reach its 2008 Alumni Appeal goal of raising $86,000. Volunteers made more than 1,500 calls to former classmates in support of Xavier High School. To date, the appeal has raised $56,626.

Our deepest appreciation and gratitude is extended to Joseph Whitters (R76) who generously issued a $5,000 challenge grant for all new and increased gifts to the Alumni Appeal. The challenge was applied to more than 200 alumni gifts.

In addition to raising money for operating needs and special projects at Xavier High School, the annual phonathon helps update alumni records and provides an opportunity for alumni to catch up with one another.

If you did not have a chance to show your support of the Alumni Appeal and would like the opportunity, you are welcome to make a donation at www.xavierfoundation.org or by mailing your gift to the Xavier Foundation at P.O. Box 10956 Cedar Rapids, IA 52410-0956.

The Foundation would like to thank the following businesses and individuals who donated refreshments and prizes for phonathon volunteers: Coca Cola, Cork ‘n Fork Restaurant: Len (L69) & Kathy (R69) Skvor, Kathy’s Pies: Kathy (Weyland) McCauley (R69), Marriott Hotel, Tic Toc Bar and Grill, Expressions Salon and Spa, and Tomaso’s Pizza: Tom Carfrae (R69).

Xavier High School proudly recognizes the first two alumni to receive First Team All-American status in intercollegiate athletics. The first, recognized here belat-edly, was Ross Dillavou (X02), a defen-sive end at Loras College in Dubuque, IA. Ross was named a First Team All-American by D3football.com as a defen-sive lineman in 2005. Even more impres-sively, Ross was one of 10 finalists for the 2005 Gagliardi Award, which is given to the top Division III football player in the nation. At Xavier, Ross started both ways and helped lead the Saints to a first-ever Class 4A playoff berth in 2001.

Our second alumnus to receive First Team recognition is Nick Weber (X04), a defensive back/receiver/punt and kick returner at Wartburg College in Waverly. Nick was named a First Team All-Ameri-can by the American Football Coaches Association as a defensive back in 2007. At Xavier, Nick started both ways and helped lead the Saints to a second Class 4A playoff berth in 2003. Nick was also a standout in basketball and track at Xavier.

SAINT update All -American

In the fall of 2007, Xavier Girl’s Basketball Coach Tom Lilly (R73) was elected to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association “Hall of Fame.” Lilly coached 13 years at Regis and began his 10th year at Xavier in November, winning State Championships in 2003, 2005 & 2007. Lilly will be inducted into the “Hall of Fame” in the spring of 2008. Congratulations, Coach Lilly!

Congratulations to Xavier Biology teacher, Scott Schaub who recently won the 10th annual 2007-2008 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Mr. Schaub was selected for his exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to students and the AP Pro-gram. Congratulations on a well deserved award, Mr. Schaub!

Xavier Students Honor Alumna and Raise $13,000

On January 26, 2008 Xavier High School was the host of a Mini-Dance-Marathon that raised more than $13,000 in mem-ory of Xavier alumna Kira Carstensen (X05) who lost her life-long battle with cancer in March of 2007. Kira’s sister, and current senior at Xavier, Lura danced in her honor along with hundreds of Xavier students.

Kira was a 2005 graduate of Xavier High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Xavier Ambas-sadors, Take Charge, Key Club and the Xavier Golf Team. Kira was an active member of Tanager Place Intergenera-tional Advisory Board and was a charter member of Children’s Hospital of Iowa Youth Advisory Council. Kira received

much support and enjoyment from the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. At-tending Dance Marathon was a highlight of each year for Kira.

Students, inspired by the strength and grace Kira exhibited each day of her short life, and in support of classmate Lura and the entire Carstensen family (parents, John (R75) and Mary and brother, Peter (X02)) rallied together and presented their plan for a Mini-Dance-Marathon to the Xavier Administration. Students were in charge of all of the details for the event, including raising money in honor of Kira and in support of the University of Iowa Dance Marathon.
