Do you ever wonder why there are Lions Logos at the Rink and the Pool and the

Valley Lodge? It is an interesting story. The Wawanesa Lions Club was formed 60 years ago. It was a large and vibrant service club in the community. The members were busy and full of ideas and over the years projects have ranged from creating and running a campground to hosting pit BBQs. One project that really got off the ground was a lottery. It was based on the sport of harness racing and took a lot of ef-fort on the part of the Lions members. Lion Don Martin remembers one time when 16 mail bags of entries were received in one week. This project made the Lions Club hundreds of thousands of dollars and that money went back to the community. Those dollars helped to build the rink and the pool and the Valley Lodge. Over the years, Li-ons have supported these facilities with do-nations and labor. For example, you may have seen the Lions logo on the Zamboni. Or in another way of helping, there are 4 Lions representatives on the Valley Lodge Board. The Lions Club had a time when it was not so well off and some of the finan-cial support for the community was less. The campground was turned over to the Municipality after it sustained significant flood damage. Other changes happened as the year went on. Nowadays, thanks to the support of the community, the Lions Club is enjoying

having funds to help where they can – both locally and globally. The support of fund raising activities like Chase the Ace, the Duck Race or the Cheer Draw, donations of used vehicle batteries and other support mean that the club can give assistance in the community where and when it is needed. And, for sure, the Club is having fun, the members are busy and full of ideas – just like 60 years ago. The next event is the 59th Annual Senior's Christmas Supper to be held on November 23. If you are 65 years old or over, please come an enjoy and evening of fun, entertainment and good food. SAVING TABS FOR A WHEELCHAIR Most Wawanesa folks are aware that Lion Don Martin collects tabs that go to-wards financing a wheelchair for a young boy who went to school at Treherne but has

recently moved and now attends school at Forrest. In spite of the move, the project continues. Don sends his tabs to Mae David-son at Glenboro who passes them on to Kevin Newton, the local co-ordinator. In Wawanesa, Lion Don has many local folks saving tabs but his sources reach beyond the village. One of his contributors is the Sandy Lake Lions Campground where Don spends time in the summer. Word does get around and recently a member of the Sandy Lake Lions Club arranged for a young lady from Onanole to present her col-lection of tabs to Lion Don for the wheel-chair project. Mikayla Riffel, a Grade 5 student at Onanole School, started collecting tabs when she was seven years old and has been busy over the past three years because she made a presentation of approximately 25 pounds of tabs! Lion Don estimates that it takes around 1,450 tabs to make up a pound! Mikayla was presented with a Lions Hope Medal from the Sandy Lake Lions. The Lions Hope Medal is presented to someone who demonstrates outstanding charitable achievement in their community. Mikayla has definitely shown determination and commitment to her endeavour. She said that she will continue to collect tabs for such a worthy cause. Thanks Mikayla, Sandy Lake Lions, and Lion Don Martin.

Donors Choice General Meeting

Tuesday, November 21st

7:00 p.m. Wawanesa Fire Hall

Meeting Room Since the creation of the Donors Choice in 2009 an annual charity drive has taken place in the Wawanesa Area, supporting 9 charities, including the Wawanesa Founda-tion that supports local needs. In that time, through the generosity of the local people, $71,593 has been donated and dispersed to the charities involved, without the need for door-to-door canvassing. This cannot continue to happen without the support of a Local Board, some current members having served for the past 9 years. We invite local people who want to see this continue in our community, to attend this meeting and encourage those interested in serving on the Board to step forward. For further information on serving, please feel free to inquire to Dell Mooney (204-824-2104).

In Memoriam BILL GULLETT

Dec 13, 1930 ~ Nov 11, 2003

In loving memory of a dear husband, father, grandfather and friend. A farmer, honest and true, who lived every day to the fullest and found joy in each person, thing or event.

Forever loved and missed by his family and all who knew him.

Live each day as if it were your last. I tell you dear friend, time is running so fast. All of us would one day return to dust. I know it’s hard to accept, but we must. Tell the people you love about the way you feel. Give them a hug and show them that love is real. Say sorry to those you offended so wounds would heal. Accepting your faults is not really a big deal. Do it now and don’t tarry, lest it be too late. Sometimes it’s not wise for the right time to wait. Because your plans could be ruined by fate. If you do it now, you would feel great. Smell the pretty flowers, listen to birds singing so gay. Enjoy the beauty of nature; give yourself time to play. Remember, on this earth we can’t forever stay. So I tell you, now is the time; go ahead and seize the day.

Georgina,

Teresa & Perry, Wayne & Val,

Ron & Amy and their families

Friday, November 10 2:30 – 3:15 p.m.

Wawanesa School Gym

The public is welcome to attend.

The rink was a busy place on the 21st. We served 90 steak sup-pers, sold 31 NHL hats and the bar was kept busy as well. We would like to thank all those that came out and supported the event in any way. We would also like to thank Dave for donating his auctioneering skills again this year. Over the course of the evening we managed to raise very close to $7000 that will be used for maintenance and capi-tal improvements to your facility. Thanks again to a great community.

Community Gardeners The Gardeners are grateful for all donations, large and small, and we can never say "Thank You" enough. But when printing our gratitude in the Lioness Express, we failed to give recog-nition to Drew Wilton and the Green Team. Maybe because they go about helping us out so quietly and efficiently. We have Drew to thank for helping us with our little watering wagon, which he configured a few years back and still helps us maintain when we need his expertise. This past summer, he designed the slip-tank that fits so nicely into Mark Rogers’ truck, and it has made watering all the flowers so much easier, especially the 4th Street hang-ing baskets. We'd like to acknowledge and say “Thank You” to Supervisor Drew and his Team for all they do for the Community Gardeners

and for the whole town. May Kreklewich for the

Wawanesa Nursery School News

As we head into November at the Nursery School we will be learn-ing a little bit about Remembrance Day and starting to learn our alphabet. We have had a busy start to the school year! So far, we have visited the fire hall and learned so much about how to be safe. We also had our Halloween party and the kids looked great in their costumes! Thank you to the Royal Bank and Wawanesa Insurance for letting us stop by to trick or treat. I would also like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to our Halloween movie night and to everyone who participated in our Little Italy pizza orders. Every little bit of fundraising goes a long way in keeping our program going!
