Term Success Stories

Megan Johnson Principal

Phil Reynolds Deputy Principal

Rod Carter Relieving Deputy Principal

Certainly the highlight for me this past term was the Creative and Performing Arts Night. It was fantastic to see the huge support from the community and the outstanding performances on stage from all our students. I look forward to an even bigger and better night next year.

We’re shaping up for a very busy Term 3. Our Year 12 students are currently sitting for their Trial HSC and we wish them all the best. I’m sure that the students will have something to celebrate at the Year 12 farewell assembly on Friday 20 September. Year 11 will be heading off for the much anticipated annual trip to the snowfields in Week 7. It’s not all fun and games though, as they will be sitting for their final Preliminary Course exams in Weeks 9 and 10. Congratulations to Grayson Cooper of Year 10 who was 16 years age champion at the Sydney North Regional Athletics Carnival.

Wyong Grove Public School once again held their athletics carnival at Wyong High School on 30th July. It was great to see our Year 9 Sports Coaching class assisting on the day. They were extremely helpful and responsible. It was wonderful to see the older students caring for and encouraging the younger ones. A great day was had by all!

Student Principal

Being student Principal was going to be a walk in the park…NEWS FLASH, no it wasn’t. The opportunity of being the student Principal for the day was so exciting that I only had a brief moment to compose myself. I greeted the student body at the front gate; on assembly took a walk through the office, attended a P&C meeting and the list goes on and on. The highlight was a visit to Wyong Grove Primary School to address Stages 2 and 3 about my day. This was truly a day that I’ll never forget and urge people to try and go for the position in years to come. This is Mr Burgoyne, signing out!!

Dept Housing Scholarships

The Gift of Life Red Cross Blood Bank took pride of place in our carpark as staff and students generously donated blood. Did you know only 1 in 30 people give blood, but 1 in 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. We urge those who can to donate blood to give the gift of life.

Congratulations to Keira Metcalfe on her scholarship.

Library Quest Brittany Player from Year 7 designed a Library Quest board game to be rewarded with a Principal’s award, class award and a block of chocolate for her incredible effort! Brittany's Library Quest themed board game included a professional box, hand made playing caricatures, instructional cards and rules. Congratulations Brittany!

‘Brand New Star’ a competition for upcoming artists on

Today’s Country 94.1. Arielle performed ‘My Life Again’ by

the McCylmonts and ‘Sweet Surrender’ by Aleyce

“READING ACROSS THE UNIVERSE”

The theme for 2013 is “READING ACROSS THE UNIVERSE”. The Book Club will release a claymation film for Book Week. The still shot here is a taste of their skill and creativity. Well done Jatzia, Dakota, Jack, Jade, Taysha, Hayley and Geordan!

BOOK WEEK Saturday 17th – Friday 23rd August. Winners of the prestigious Children’s Book Council Awards to be announced on Friday 16th August. Check out the display in the library of the Short-listed Books.

BOOK CLUB School Book Club meets every Tuesday break 1 in the Library to share their reading, exchange books and participate in fun activities. We also have a delicious morning tea and would love to welcome new members.

LITERACY WEEK To celebrate Literacy Week the Book Club interviewed many of our teachers and students about their reading favourites and their relationship with books. For some inspiration on great books the interviews have been published on Blog Ed “Wyong High School readers”.

NEW BOOKS The library added lots of new books to our collection in Term 2, particularly in the Fiction area. Check the School Website for new titles or better still, visit the library!

Spelling Bee During term 2 Year 7 participated in a spelling bee as part of literacy and numeracy week. Thirty winners won a series of both major and minor prizes some of which included $20 Westfield gift cards, lolly bags and chocolate! Students cheered for and encouraged their friends and class mates while pumping Miss Ball's iPod! Well done to Year 9 helpers Michael Nutt, Geordan Hart and Jacob Jones who provided expert technical support.

Fashion Workshop

Students went to the Hunter School of Fashion workshop on Wednesday 26th June. The students learned new skills and produced some great work. Congratulations to Emma, Stella, Rochelle, Tahlia and Tamara.

2013 NSW TRAINING AWARDS

Congratulations to Year 11 student Henry for his success at the Training Awards presentation evening on Thursday 27th June. Henry received a Highly Commended Career and Transition award.

Jonathan, a previous student of Wyong High School, received the winning award for his Information Technology Traineeship. Jonathan works at Wideline Pty Ltd whilst undergoing training at TAFE.

Careers Expo Students from Years 10 and 12 who attended the Careers Expo on the 25th June found the day to be very informative. The students were wonderful ambassadors for Wyong High School. Many thanks to Mr Sugitha, Ms Hayward, Miss Dashwood and Mr Neate for their assistance on the day.

Yr 10 Interviews Year 10 interviews held on the 27th June were very successful. The students presented themselves very well. Their research into their chosen careers was excellent and we were very impressed with their appearance and ability to communicate. Many thanks to Mr Sugitha, Ms Hayward, Mr Carter, Mr Hearn, Mrs Bayliss, Mrs Penni, Mr Bracher, and Mr Blanch for their assistance on the day.

Students of year 7 and 8 IT classes were asked to help make the year 6 orientation day better and easier for the year six students to understand, as well as put a fun technology spin on it to make it interesting. We found ourselves creating posters, QR codes and writing information to be seen on the day. We learned a lot about our school system, the history and how a QR code works. Overall it was a productive learning experience and one I hope will be useful, especially for the year 6’s as it is a scary time when transitioning from primary to high school. Courtney McDermott
