The boat comes from mainland Shetland three times a week in summer. From May to September it arrives on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In winter it only sails on Tuesdays – if the weather is good!

The ferry takes two and a half hours to get from Shetland to Fair Isle.

For hundreds of years the women on Fair Isle were kept busy knitting and trading their home made textiles with passing ships. They exchanged their knitting for things they couldn’t make themselves. In the past, fishermen would often do their own knitting.

This photograph of a fisherman knitting was taken in 1900.
