In those days, the Spanish had begun to set up colonies in the New World which we now call, America.

They had arrived in America by sea and begun claiming the land as their own. They also claimed that they owned all the gold and silver they found there.

Colony – a piece of land in another country that

people take over and settle in.

When he presented the treasure to the queen, he quickly became Queen Elizabeth’s favourite pirate.

He was ordered to attack the Spanish colonies in the New World and to plunder as many Spanish ships as he could. The Spanish ships were full of treasure and he was to make sure he plundered as much treasure as he could carry on board his ship.
