Named aft er one of the world’s renowned statesman and South African icon, Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth is one of the most sought-aft er desti nati ons in South Africa.

The city, also known as ‘the Friendly City’, is located in the Eastern Cape Province, which has been home to some of the country’s most iconic fi gures including former presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and other heroes of the struggle against apartheid.

Transport OverviewNelson Mandela Bay will off er visitors and residents safe and easily accessible public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Bus and other existi ng services will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest™ and the public viewing areas (PVAs) are adequately served.

Event-related public transport will be added to the regular public transport system i.e. airport shutt le services from the Port Elizabeth Internati onal Airport to various event faciliti es, stadium shutt les to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Park & Ride and City Wide services.

Airport and Stadium Shutt le ServicesOn match days the NMBM will provide shutt le services from the Airport to the Stadium, Fan Fest and Beachfront Hotel faciliti es.

• The Airport to Stadium shutt le service will operate for the ti me period of six hours before kick-off .

• The Airport to Beachfront Hotel service will run via the Kings Beach Transport Hub and will be operati onal 24hrs a day for the period of the event and will have a pre game peak starti ng six hours before kick-off .

• The Airport to the Fan Fest route will operate daily from 09h00 to 24h00 and will have a pre game peak starti ng six hours before kick-off .

Stadium shutt le services operati ng 3 to 6 hours pre-match and return for 3 hours post match will also be provided from:• Summerstrand serving the Beachfront

Park n Ride and City Wide ServicesShutt le services will be provided from the following three Park & Ride sites to the Stadium: • Kings Beach Parking Area – Humewood.• Fan Fest at St Georges Park Cricket Stadium.• Andrew Rabie High School.

In additi on to these sites a Park & Walk site is located at the Cilliers School playing fi elds allowing spectators to park and walk to the stadium.

Other services that will operate within the city area are from Kings Beach Transport Hub are to the following areas: • To the Beachfront Hotel faciliti es.• To the Fan Fest.

Event Venue PlansStadium AreaThe Port Elizabeth Stadium is situated at Prince Alfred’s Park in North End. The stadium is bordered to the south by Fettes Road, to the east by Prince Alfred’s Road and to the north by Milner Street. and is conveniently located close

to main transport routes from all parts of the city.

Shutt le services from the airport, Beachfront Hotels and the Park & Ride sites will drop off spectators at dedicated bays along Harrower Rd between Fett es Road and Lancaster Street.

Fan Park and CBD Wide Area The main Fan Fest will be located at the St Georges Park Cricket Stadium in the suburb called Central and can accommodate approximately 44 500 people.

Shutt le services will be provided to the Fan Fest from Park & Ride sites, Beachfront Hotel faciliti es and from the Fan Fest to the Stadium.

A shutt le service will operate on the Fan Fest precinct linking the CBD in Govan Mbeki Avenue with the Fan Fest in Rink Street via Parliament Street and Western Rd.

By planePort Elizabeth Airport is located just a few kilometres out of the city and has regular flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other South African airports. See also Discount airlines in Africa.

By trainThe central train station is in the city centre near the harbour. Shosholoza

Meyl operates daily inter-city trains to Johannesburg and Bloemfontein. You can also get to Cape Town, Kimberley, Pietermaritzburg and Durban (by changing trains in Bloemfontein), to East London (by changing trains in Noupoort, Colesburg or Bloemfontein), to Mthatha (by changing trains in Noupoort and Amabele) or to Grahamstown (by changing trains in Alicedale).

Premier Classe operates twice-weekly luxury trains to Cape Town via George and Oudtshoorn. MetroRail operates frequent commuter trains to Uitenhage and the surrounding suburbs during weekdays, with a reduced service over weekends.

The Apple Express is a narrow-gauge (2 feet/610 mm) tourist train that operates from a separate station in Humewood Road near King’s Beach. It departs regularly for Thornhill Village via the Van Staden’s River bridge, the

highest narrow-gauge rail bridge in the world.

By carPort Elizabeth is easily accessible by motorways from Cape Town (790 km) via the Garden Route, Bloemfontein and East London (310 km). Of course, you can also drive from Johannesburg.

By busAll major South African coach companies offer regular schedules to and from Port Elizabeth. The city is also on the Baz Bus route.

Rail, minibus taxi and metered taxi services will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure Mbombela Stadium, 7km from the city centre and the FIFA Fan Fest™, located at the Bergvlam High School are adequately served. Existi ng bus, rail and minibus taxi services will extend their services to cater for the increased demand around match ti mes.

Event-related public transport i.e. shutt les to the Kruger Mpumalanga Internati onal Airport, the Mbombela Stadium and Park n Ride services will be added to the regular public transport system.
