Background

The National Training Survey:

• has been running since 2005

• is delivered jointly by the GMC and COPMeD

• captures your on-the-ground views of training

• informs GMC and deanery quality assurance work and

• helps ensure that standards for education and training are met

NTS 2011: what the survey told us last year

2011: the good…

• 79% rated their current post as good or excellent• 99% of trainees have a dedicated educational supervisor

who is responsible for their appraisal• 84.8% said they always knew their educational supervisor

was easily accessible

In 2011, 87% or 46,668 doctors in training answered the survey. Of these:

“I feel I receive excellent training opportunities. This hospital is a fantastic place to work and I would strongly recommend it to all trainees.”

And the bad…

• 80.2% of trainees with posts in surgery and 77.1% of those with posts in medicine reported working beyond their WRT rostered hours on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis

• 28% of foundation and specialty trainees said they never or rarely received informal feedback from a senior clinician, supervisor or senior colleague

“Regarding this post, I felt there was a clear lack of clinical supervision at all times, meant I felt out of my depth. Sometimes the advice I got from senior colleagues was unsafe or incorrect. This led to serious errors and other potential errors.”

Shorter survey, faster results

The GMC have listened to your feedback and this year:

• The number of questions has been halved

• The survey is only open for seven weeks, from 30 April – 15 June

• Survey results will be available in July

• The new flexible reporting tool will make it easier for trainees to engage with the results

these are customised questions about your specialty, including academic questions, if you are an academic trainee

Protecting your identity

Protecting your identity

• Individual responses are held confidentially and survey results are reported anonymously.

• Where survey responses are fewer than three, they will be aggregated.

• The GMC has a duty to follow up any concerns relating to patient safety.

• With your explicit permission, your details will be used to follow up these and other concerns flagged by your survey responses.

How to take part

How to take part

• Don’t wait for an invitation

• Log on to GMC Online after 30 April 2012*

• Your survey will be waiting for you to complete – if it is not there, contact your deanery survey team

• The GMC and your deanery will send you reminder emails and text messages during the survey period

• You must complete your survey submission by 15 June 2012

*Non medical public health trainees will not access the survey via GMC Online. They will be invited to take part by their faculty.

Who takes part

• Foundation trainees (F1 and F2 trainees on a foundation programme)

• Core trainees

• Higher specialty training, including SpR and GP trainees

• FTSTA trainees, LAT trainees

• Military trainees – all military trainees working within the service on all approved programmes

• Trainees in Clinical Lecturer and Academic Clinical Fellowship posts approved by the GMC

• Trainees working for non-NHS organisations, e.g. occupational medicine and palliative medicine.

• Non-medical public health trainees (new for 2012)*

Not taking part

• Trainees on out of programme training (OOPT) or out of programme research (OOPR) on the census date (30 April)

• Trainees on maternity leave on the census date

• Dentists

• Doctors who have been awarded their CCT, but are awaiting a consultant post (in their grace period)

• Pharmaceutical Medicine trainees, who will be surveyed separately later

Key dates

• Now or ASAP: Ensure you have access to your GMC Online account

• 30 April: The census date for the survey

• 30 April – 15 June: Log on to GMC Online to take part in the survey in this period

• 15 June: Survey closes

• 18 June: Survey reporting and data made available to deaneries for review

• During July: Online reporting and national highlights report published

Why the survey matters: COPMeD

“The National trainees’ survey is your opportunity to comment on your experience of postgraduate medical education (pgme) and training over the past year; the good things, the not so good things and the frankly bad or unacceptable.

Since 2006 the survey has had a genuine impact on the Trusts, hospitals and other educational sites used by trainee doctors for pgme and has a demonstrable impact on the quality of educational environments. 

Please use this opportunity to highlight good practice and identify those areas where practices require improvement or are just plain not acceptable. If all trainees engage with the survey then not only will you benefit those that will follow you in the posts you report on but you will also benefit from those who have occupied the posts you will be moving into shortly. So please complete this survey."

Why the survey matters: revalidation

• Before revalidation begins in late 2012, we need to know which organisations ("designated bodies") will be supporting you in this

• For trainees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, your designated body will be your postgraduate deanery

• For trainees in Scotland, this will be NHS Education for Scotland

• We’ll use your response to NTS2012 survey to confirm your designated body
