• Still need to further legitimate and promote mechanisms of engagement beyond CABs
• Huge opportunities to learn from each other
• On-going advocacy needed to create consensus about what constitutes “good practice’ looks like in terms of community engagement

• Turn over and lack of experience among CLOs and educators creates challenges
• GPP good start on setting normative expectations but more thought needed about how to institutionalize
• Need to further explore how best to create synergies between community work and social science teams

Establishing a Community of Practice
• Communities of practice are networks of people bound together by shared expertise and passion for a joint enterprise
– Allow for personal connections
– Create synergies & foster collective strategic planning and/or problem solving
– Create a level playing field where all experiences & information are valued.

The Most Successful CoPs:
• Have a clear focus & are personally useful to members
• Encourage and reinforce a culture of sharing
• Have ongoing cultivation (moderator plays a key role)
• Have only the most basic of rules
• Encourage everyone to actively participate

COP Example MMCI
• Created in May 2005 to respond to special communication challenges posed by large-scale trials
• Includes communications officers of all sponsoring groups, key advocacy networks, site representatives and allied scientists
• Currently has 36 members. Hosts annual meeting and bi-monthly conference calls
• Division of labor based on need, capacity and interest

CoP Case Study: Kelele
• Kelele (meaning “noise” in Kiswahili) is an e-mail based CoP of regional magnet theatre coordinators in Kenya
• Members share experiences & pose questions to each other such as:– “What can I do about little children attending
shows where we talk openly about sex?”; or
– “How should we bring up issues of fidelity in a society where polygamy is the traditional norm?”
